He's not a terrible fielder. First base is basically third base on the other side of the field without having to throw very often.

You keep his bat in the lineup and get to add a bat for DH. Like Yoshida. Or Anthony. Or Refsnyder.

He'd get to talk to all the base runners at first, which would keep him happy and focused.
