Red Sox/MLB 2025 Regular Season II

Here’s a good point that I came across:

Devers is always publicly clamoring for the front office to improve the team, he’s done this pretty often in recent years. Hell he flat out told them to go find a 1B yesterday. When they got an improvement (who is the teams MVP so far) he threw a hissy fit because the guys a better 3B than him by a country mile.

He’s basically saying find guys that are better than my teammates but not me…I’m sure they appreciate it.

Real gem of a franchise cornerstone we got

Ppl also trying to pin this on Breslow are crazy. Breslow played on the Sox team that had Adrian Gonzalez volunteering to play RF, he’s probably looking at Devers in the same light his teammates are probably looking at him. A me-first guy that doesn’t care about the team winning.

Who is blaming Breslow for Devers being a petulent child? Provide some links or content or is this just a strawman argument to defend your nerd GM?

Trade Devers for a bucket of BP balls. At the end of the day he is a well paid employee. I don’t want to hear all the “they didn’t speak to him about the Bregman signing and his position change” BS. He’s making $300MM+ on a contract he signed. He plays where he’s told to play. There are players that can replace his bat waiting in the wings. I don’t care if they have to eat a large portion of his contract, get him out of Boston ASAP as he has been and continues to be a distraction to this team. Also, I’d find the most uncompetitive team to send him to so he can be happy playing third base in front of a crowd where you can count the fans sitting in the stadium.

He's already on an uncompetitive team

Now we've reached the absurdity of saying trade him for a bucket of balls.

You have no idea that Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer will step right in and be Devers at the plate. Come on.

If you can find a trade partner and get decent value then ok I am listening. You don't just dump a bat like Devers though.

I feel like there's probably some solid middle ground between "Rafael Devers can never be asked to do anything he's not 100% on board with" and "OMG, trade his overrated ass to Pittsburgh for pennies on the dollar!!!"

I want to know if the Sox asked Raffy to play other positions. Mentioning the outfield seems very specific. If he's been asked to play out there before then I 100% support Raffy. In general I don't have any issue with him voicing his opinion or telling the front office to find a guy who is actually a first baseman. That said, I would expect Raffy to start practicing the position a la Big Papi in 2003.

This is all a fair response to my comment, however:
1 - They aren’t uncompetitive
2 - His hitting began to decline after the all star break last season and prior to his shoulder injury
3 - Is .250ish hitting Devers irreplaceable?
4 - Will his poor attitude continue to impact his performance and the clubhouse in Boston?
5 - If you really take the “bucket of BP balls” comment I made literally, would you as least agree to a bucket of game balls? 😀

Lou Merloni was talking about this days ago and was like "I'm getting the sense the guys in the clubhouse aren't happy about their teammate".

For all the shit Casas gets, you don't see that happening.

Raffy isn't putting the team first. He's putting himself.

Just don't like that

As for switching to first base why not? IMO the biggest challenge for a 1B is learning to scoop throws in the dirt or blocking/catching throws that are offline. Catching a ground ball at first doesn't differ in the slightest from catching a ground ball at third and you don't have to make that long throw across the diamond as often. If I'm a player not only do I want to help my team I would definitely prefer to be in the field and not just a DH.

Devers is an asshole.
