GDT: 2025 Playoffs - First Round

MTL gonna play defense tonight, or just let Washington players roam free in front of their own net?

Is it a prerequisite that Brock be involved in playoff games where a team takes a double minor in the last 30 seconds

Which team down 0-2 has the best chance to come back and win the series?

St Louis? Edmonton? Ottawa? Montreal? Jersey?

Conversely, which team is most likely to get swept?

I’d say maybe STL or MTL best chance, though slim, to come back. Jersey will get swept.

Edmonton and Montreal. The Kings are a different team away from home and I never write off Connor McDavid from carrying his team for a few games or Draisaitl getting hot.

For the Canadiens, except for 2 bad periods they’ve played the Capitals fairly even.

I'd say that St. Louis or Edmonton for the comeback, but realistically I only see St. Louis being able to do it because I think that series is much tighter. Edmonton is very banged up, is playing horribly, and their goaltending is questionable. They have two of the best players on the planet though so there's always a chance.

Ottawa falls into both categories for me, but they can only come back if Toronto has an epic meltdown of their own doing (unlikely to happen for me, but we've seen it before). Ultimately I think they and New Jersey get swept.

FWIW, goals scored by losing teams in playoff games thus far:

3-1-1-2-2-2-1-3-5-1-2-2-2-1-1-2

Average goals given up by the winners = 1.9.

Overall the NHL is in a bad ERA now where the top 6-8 teams are just so much better than anyone else. Its probably why last year and this year the first round has not been too good, at least so far and home teams in 24/25 in the first round through the first 32 games are like 24-8 with Dallas being responsible for 3 of those losses alone. Its likely gonna lead to another great ensuing few rounds though. Series like CAR/WSH TOR/FLA or TB could easily all be 6-7s. We'll have to see if next year and after if teams like MTL/CBJ/DET/CGY/MIN can begin to take steps to become more competitive with top teams.

That Lane Hutson is something else. Holds the blueline beautifully, and so mobile—reminds me of Quinn Hughes.

If I am a Canes fan I just hope Thompson sitting for a week which he might do makes him lose his mojo because this dude is like 2003 Giguere right now. I think CAR is f'd vs WSH anyhow but if he plays like this they can truly forget about it. Especially since Andersen probably won't be as good vs a much better offense.

Beau looks like he did when he was in the prime with the Isles. Just complete workhorse. Where was that on the roster this year?
