2025 Offseason Talk

Was thinking today that a big issue with this current team is that there's no clear identity, and a clear mismatch between management and coaching.

  • Gaglardi and Nill comments seem to suggest they want to build a build, bruising, hard to play against team for the playoffs. Big mobile D-men, strong forecheck (why they love Marchment). Nill obvoiusly values skill players still, but they think they need more grit and toughness. This is why we're probably trading Robo. This team tends to be older, bigger, and slower.

  • PBD seems to want a counterattack team that is stout defensively and burns you on the rush the other way. That team needs strong puck movers, speedy forwards, etc. But he also wants big bodies on the backend, and doesn't seem to value puck movers as much. Hard to transition and counterattack when only 2 guys on your team can make a first pass.
Nill goes out and gets guys like Lubu and Ceci which are not good analytically but offer "size." But no ability to transition the puck. Meanwhile our forwards get slower and slower every season. Outside of Hintz who is now average speed, we have no one who can burn another team anymore.

Really wish they could decide what they want to be.

Hintz is now average speed?

Outside of Hintz who is now average speed..

Lol you say this when this season he was the 15th fastest skater and had 4th most 20+ mph bursts per 60min. There was 920 active players this season which means he is top 2% in speed.

No need to look up further than G5 against Oilers when he was nearly catching McDavid with a broken foot before the goal.

All it took was multiple lottery wins, one of which was a generational talent. Very repeatable blueprint for success.
I agree that here is an element of luck when it comes to acquisition of a player by any means- UFA, trade, or draft- and Edm did luck out winning the McDavid lottery. I am merely pointing out the idiocy of setting up equally idiotic strawmen and throwing out extreme outliers as examples of the mean.

Man I just remembered had we found a way to win that Game 7 in OT against Calgary 3 years ago we would have ran into McDavid and Esmonton in the 2nd round too...could be looking at the stat of losing to the Oilers 3 times in 4 years. Ooph. Almost Kings level had that happened.

Except the Kings blew their series we were never really in ours

Over Marchment. Absolutely. Get rid of Marchment.
Granny is looking at likely Brock Nelson Money, presumable Marchment would have to be going out. Because they still need money to fill out the rest of the roster if they negate what would be opened by trading Robo with Granny, they still need to open up some more space

I'm pretty sure Granny is at this point more after Stanley Cup. He have to take less money or he is going back to San Jose...

I'm pretty sure a there's teams that offer PO opportunities that will be able to offer him 6+m.
Maybe the Fins can sell him to take less here, but I doubt it.
The only reason Duchene took less, was/is because Nashville was giving him 3-4m on his buyout

It was either fire or extend him with his expiring contract . With how the WCF went i think this is the correct choice.

Then, its an easy no.
