2025 Offseason Talk

I think you're overestimating the depth of the Stars prospect pool.
A bigger question is how many guys on the AHL roster have any NHL future?

I don't know much about any of them beyond their names and some general idea about their stat lines. Can any of these forwards really skate? Are any especially physical? I want the Stars forward group to get faster, but from the few call ups they've done of a couple of those guys, none stood out as being anything more than potential cheap 4th line rotation prices.

What I take from the exit videos today.

1) Benn is desperate to stay and finish as a Star. Get the sense he will sign a 2 or 3 year deal at 2.5 to 3 AAV.

2) Duchene I think goes to free agency and sees what offers he gets around length, he wants some term security. If Dallas gets him 3 years even at a lower rate he might stay. But if Nill initially doesn't do more than 1 year I think Duchene will see what's out there.

3) It feels like there is a small grudge there from Oettinger, when asked about his relationship with Deboer if it was strained he didn't answer it directly. Almost said his job whoever is coach is to stop the puck better.

There wasn't too much else in those videos outside of the dejection if losing.
Benn had better not get 2m+
Guy is useless at everything now

Under a million is an insult to a vet and captain, and I would guess $1.5Mil with performance bonuses on top.

Just a guess. However, salaries tend to be higher than what we, as fans, think they ought to be.
This is why it's better not to make an offer at all. If overpaying him is a requirement, then thank him for the many years and let him sign elsewhere.

How many 40+ point players are out there making 2M

The problem here is if you go by the back half of the season and the playoffs, he's more of a 32 point pace guy (his playoff point pace round up to 14). The Bennaissance isn't coming back. This decline is real and is continuing.

The coaching staff sees it. He found himself going from being a 15+ minute guy in the regular season to a <13 minute guy in the playoffs.

Benn is also no longer a special teams contributor because he can't kill penalties, and he's become a guy who doesn't get regular PP shifts because he can't skate well enough to help there either.

So what role is he coming back to play? Mascot? I know this seems mean, but isn't it a problem when the only justification for signing a guy is because people like how Jeff K growls "The Captain"?

Would like to see us fill out the roster with a few more guys in that 27-29 age group . Would bring duchene back at 3 m again but with him and seguin and possibly benn back , that’s enough veteran presence . Don’t necessarily need to load up on skill but just more of a focus on guys who are in their prime and have that drive to compete . They’re are a lot of bargain players set to hit the market this year .
One might as well just resign themselves to seeing the same shit play out next season. Benn was never a great influential leader, but his scoring made up for it. Now, he's clearly lost that scoring touch and is a liability.

I hate that I want Dutchy gone because the dude is all class and heart.

Sounds like bullshit to me.

I think everyone sees the decline- but I think @FirstRowUpperDeck is bang on when he said we always underestimate contract values, especially for veteran players.

Not looking at playoffs right now (you need to win regular season games to make playoffs), if you look at 5v5 production we've been talking about a lot of guys near the top of this list being moved out.

JRob is rumoured to be on the trade block
Duchene probably isn't coming back
A lot of people here don't want 14 back
People want Marchment traded

That's a whole lot of scoring gone.

I think the cap circumstances this summer force Jamie Benn to accept whatever is left to remain with the franchise. He's worth quite a bit more than 2M AAV (just look at how much Jeff Carter is getting paid) - but it's a situation similar to when Spezza wanted to play in Toronto- he took what they offered.

In the regular season- I still think he's good enough to play about 2 mins a game on the second PP unit with 3rd line TOI. Adding forward depth at the TDL ideally pushes him down to play on the 4th line.

I lean towards bringing Duchene back. If he will accept another cheap contract I don't think we will be able to find anyone better for the regular season and anyone that skilled. There were times this season when he was our best forward.

I think he's going to want 2-3 years on his next contract though. I wonder if you can get him at 3 or under if you offer him two years.

Marchment and Dumba 100% have to be moved. No ifs or buts about that.

If it's between $3 million for Duchene or $2 million for Benn, Duchene is the easy and obvious choice. But I also wouldn't give Duchene more than one season.

Only way to do anything other than sign minimum salary players is to move guys like Dumba/Marchment/Lib. Seguin holds a full NMC for the duration of his 2 final years. He's not going unless he wants to go. Plus, Dallas would need to give up something to move him.
