2025 Offseason Talk

Better puck skills on defense and faster forwards especially wingers. They need to be better at puck battles and puck possession, then the offense will be better, get to the net and stop always looking for the perfect shot.

A general question- even if Robertson stays- and you make another run next season- you ideally are not retaining Duchene, Marchment, or Dadonov. Benn can fill in for the third line or something but clearly isn’t a top 6 player anymore. Who is scoring goals next season? The free agent class blows- Sam Bennett, maybe? Can you afford him? Marchand?

Ignore lines, etc. just a general head count:
Robertson - Hintz - Seguin
Rantanen - Johnston - Granlund
Steel - Bourque - Hyr.
Benn - Back - Blackwell

Granlund takes 3x6.5 if he’s feeling generous- which is also not a guarantee, or that he will resign at all.

But if you tell me you’re trading Robertson for a defenseman with no guarantees going into free agency- you’re almost certainly resigning Duchene with no guarantee he takes another pay cut. Maybe even holding onto Marchment if things don’t go well.

And we run into the same issue we did this season. That lineup is not going to get it done it seems

That’s still one very slow team.

Like him or not he gets paid to do what we all do for free. I don’t always agree with pundits especially the bias Canadian ones.

Either way I more so pointing out that there may be a reason Pete has never won a cup.
Probably just luck and circumstances more than anything. People don't like hearing things like that, but it plays a big part in hockey especially.

Wonder if Duchene takes a 3 year deal with a light 1st year (maybe with bonuses)

year 1 $2mill with bonuses..
year 2 and 3 $3.5mil.

I like the idea of moving on from Marchment, elevating Steel to the 3rd line and making the line Steel-Duchene-Seguin

Unsure if it happens or not, but Duchene still has a year of Nashville money so might be doable and the term suits his security need. To me that is a fine option for a 60 point 3rd line centre which he will be in that time.

Stars would still need to Find 1 more top 6 impact forward (ideally with size and speed). But if Duchene takes an economical deal and marchment is moved, it makes it doable.

What's everyone's thoughts on Dante Fabbro? He had a solid year in Columbus. Could you get him for a 3 or 4 mill deal? I think he would be a decent option as a 2nd pair RHD. One I'll be watching

He's honestly who I had as a realistic target for the Stars, but I wasn't sure if it was because I've picked him and/or Gavrikov up in NHL25 or if it was because he could be a good fit, lol.

Stars need to move guys out in order to do anything other than add minimum salary players to fill up their 23 man roster with their $5 mill of cap space.
seguin, holds a full NMC for the remaining 2 years. So, kind of stuck with him unless he does want to go elsewhere. But, paying to move off him.

They are a PO team. Whether they have enough talent coming up to fill in holes, who knows...

Bringing Benn back means 25% of your wingers are very slow because he and Seguin will be in the lineup every night. I don't get the desire from folks to keep so much the same and expect different results.

Benn is coming back whether we like it or not imo. There's no chance the team doesn't re-sign him unless he chooses to retire

This 100%.

But also start praying to any deity you believe in for retirement.
Sacrifice would be acceptable too

Why are people obsessed w selling Robertson?
It's not that people want to trade him, so much as we expect him to because theirs strong rumors indicating friction on the FO/Ownership side. Plus you can't have 2 wings making 10+m

On the 10 mil thing. The cap is going up again next year. A ~10.8 mil contract is gonna be the same cap% as filip forsbergs 8.5x8 contract at the time of its signing. I don't think talking about absolute amounts is useful.
