2025 Offseason Talk

I think the only way PDB gets the axe is if Nill believes he has lost the locker room, like most coaches do after a few years. If that is the case, he will let Pete resign to save face.

I doubt they let Jamie go, but will force him to re-up for one year at no less than $1Mil (anything less is a slap in the face to any vet, much less your captain.) It may be that Benn comes back and retires right after his 400th goal.

I think Nill will do fine in the offseason again, despite those here who think they know how to GM better than he has. Of course, around here, Nill doesn't know what he is doing, but he ended up doing just about everything everyone here said they wanted, plus some (the mantra was that Nill just picks up scraps and never makes a big deal)

We are disappointed with what was a very successful season, even without winning it all. Since we didn't win, Nill will tweak the roster. The good news is that, as Bob Gainey once said, it only takes a few changes and additions to the roster to turn a team around. This team doesn't need to be turned around, so perhaps one key addition and/or subtraction or two will be all that is necessary.

I hate to say it, but in reality, maybe missing the PO's next year would help. They have played a lot of extra games in the playoffs the last few years, almost enough to constitute a complete seasons worth of games. They did look tired, and not capable of generating their style of play in other than short bursts.

You're missing the point. We're not talking about constructive criticism. Oettinger had no chance on the first two goals and it was anybody but Oettinger's fault that the Stars skaters tried to half ass the game until they were three goals down.
God, if he had "no chance" on a breakaway by Mattias f***ing Janmark-- Pete was right.

There's something really wrong with this team. On paper this team is better than the team last year but underperfoming of core players in inexcusable.

Basically this team was carried by Rantanen and Oettinger from first round up to this point. But the problems with 5v5 have been there atleast after the 4 nations. Yes that 7 game loss streak after the regular season is one example but even before that Dallas was winning some not so good teams only barely while getting outshotted.

And then in the playoffs they get outplayed by Colorado in the first round in 5v5. Get saved by superhuman perfromance by Rantanen but also Oettigner. Then in the Wpg series they get shut out in two games.

Look at Rantanen for example:

  • Scored 17.6% (almost fifth) of all Stars points.
  • Leads the second in scoring (Harley) in points by 36%
  • Leads the team in high danger scoring chances and shots in 5v5 and all strengths
  • Only one to score on Winnipegs home ice

In no way was this loss because of Rantanen getting cold in the Edmonton series. He was by far the best player of this team in these playoffs apart from Oettinger.

Then you have Duchene with 0 points in 5v5 (!). Like wtf. Benn only has 1 5v5 point. Who is the second in points to Rantanen in 5v5 points? Sam Steel. Then third is the defender Thomas Harley.

This is not a recipe for winning a cup. No way underperfoming 5v5 this bad would even get them to WCF if it wasn't for Rantanen.

There's definitely some mental issues and leadership issues. But I would definitely fire DeBoer after how he embarrased Otter and start from there. Duchene needs be gone too and be replaced with speed, youth and grit. Same with Benn. Maybe Robertson too.
Why just him? The architect of this is Nill. In 12+ years he hasn't managed to do anything besides a bubble SCF appearance and 3 disappointing WCF showings. Agreed that many teams would rather have this over their current situation (Wpg, for example), but throwing all that $$ and NMCs on players whom have become liabilities, building this "depth" that seems to flub come playoffs time, and performing mostly average to poor to fix the blueline is on him. After 12+ years, his blueline top players are Miro- a lucky lottery win pick, Harley- a relatively new D man who is still figuring things out, and Lindell- solid 2nd pairing dman who happens to be a holdover from the previous GM, and then a bunch of Dumbas, Lyubushkins, (over the hill) Suters, AHLers, etc.. That's what he saw and decided was a blueline good enough to contend. Unpardonable.

I say relieve him of his GM duties (go play President of Hockey Ops or something) and let the future decisions of retaining/signing players or hiring decision of the coach be left to the new GM. We know Nill will just run this all over again next year and "fire PDB by not extending him."

I mean. De Boer kinda admitted he lost the room by saying that the players need to have their backs against the wall in order to perform. Which is essentially saying he lost them without saying it. While he doesn't take the blame himself the meaning is exactly the same. It's his job to get the players to perform...maybe not every game of the season but surely in a playoff elimination game. If he can't do that then he has to be replaced.

I like Pete DeBoer and I think he's an excellent coach but he surely didn't help himself with what he said after the game. He's a very good coach but I'm no longer sure if he's the right coach for this team.

So what I've been told:

-Robertson will most likely be moved this off-season
-Dumba is gone
-We are high on a UFA d-man but apparently that interest has cooled due to some things about said UFA d-man

Give it a few days. There may be more coming after Gags, Nill and management have time to decompress.
Gags is NOT happy, that much I've been told.
Makes me wonder if the UFA D is Ekblad and the PED suspension cooled them off.

but it clearly is working for him in the PO.
Hell look at how great Nuke was on the Nose Candy, look how pedestrian he is now.
Maybe we should be handing out drugs to improve the teams play. Maybe Hintz won't be such a little bitch if he's coked out of his mind too

I found this episode pretty damn good.

Edit: the beginning portion where Gavin speaks about the DeBoer/Otter situation.

Hintz 2g-7a-9p in 14gp

But the FO/Ownership doesn't like Robo
He's Closer to a goal per game than anyone else is to a point per game (Rants excluded but small sample)

I’m glad Gaglardi is not happy. Shows he wants to win. Too often too many people are happy with just making it this far 3 years in a row.

I hope Pete is gone and not just for the Oettinger thing. I think calling the timeout was right but pulling Jake was wrong. 1st goal was not on him. 2nd goal was. It’s Janmark. You have to stop that. Call the timeout and see if that can reset the whole team. Not blame Jake. But it looks like Pete has lost the room.

Dumba needs to go and take Marchment with him. If a coach is not going to play Lyubushkin he needs to go as well.

Robertson trade scares me. What are they getting in return? I highly doubt it is Brady. Unless there are conversations no one is reporting that he wants out. If he doesn’t they won’t move him. Picks and prospects? Who replaces Robo’s production?

This team needs a new leader. It needs more size, speed and physicality. Benn is clearly done. He should have beat Nurse’s face in. That was a dirty chop on your 1C and no one responded. Oilers knew no one would respond that’s why Bouchard did it again when Hintz came back.

Ottawa isn't going to trade Brady. That dream can die already.

I can’t speak for the FO and maybe they don’t like him but for me it’s a matter of who has value that can bring something good back at another position. Rantanen should be able to handle Robo’s production. I would not move Wyatt and I can’t see them moving Hintz. So who else do you move to address the top 4 RHD? The only other option is Harley and that would be a bigger mistake even though this team has 4 LHD and no one on the right side.

That’s a little too far. Nill has done a good job. As much as I want to see a cup win Nill is on the right track. A few things need to change but I am very happy with him and Chris Young even though he is now the president but he did bring a World Series.

Moving on from Nill you could get someone who is bad. A Nico Harrison type where you trade your superstar player for old guys. Or could be a clueless as The jones boys (probably no one will ever be that clueless) but you risk taking a major step back. Nill is on the right track.

I think Lybushkin will stay I didn't think he was that bad not as bad as Ceci was, lybushkin seemed pretty invisible for the most part which as your 3rd pair RD is fine. He also has 2 years left Dumba should be much easier to move and we don't have the cap to completly rehaul the RD. Ideally we get a top 4 RD keep Lybushkin as 3RD Petro/Lundqvist as the 7/8.

as far as we know, he wasn't injured. and he was eating HS in the PO. that's pretty bad

If he didn't have that 3rd year on the deal, I would ship him out too, but that's a lot of assets wasted fixing the 3rd RD spot by moving Dumba and Lybushkin. Maybe i'm underestimating Nill but can't see us being capable of cap dumping both of these guys.

Dumba 1st...doubt they move Lybushkin this off-season.

Dude said he'd offer Wyatt for Brady.
Guy is on crack
Wait he did? Geezus Gavin Lol.

I only listened to the rant of the DeBoer and Otter situation and agreed with all of it.

Did not realize what was said after that.

Yeah around 24mins in,
"I don't know why Ottawa would ever trade Brady Tkachuk but you make the call... And Yes I'm offering up Jason Robertson. I'm offering up Wyatt Johnston. There's no safety on this team as far as who i'm offering up for Brady Tkachuk... There is NMC..... "

I edited my post accordingly then.

Robo, yes. Wyatt is a hard pass. Not sure anyone would make that deal.

According to Duchene the team was told not to respond to Nurse. Deboer called his team soft before the game even started. Told them they are not built that way. Screw Deboer. I wanted him gone after the collapse in the regular season. I want him gone more now.
