Speculation: 2025 Off-season Thread

Suppose we moved G this summer in a package for a 2C. Our D would be:

Toews-Makar
X-Malinski
Aamodt/Ludvig-Manson
Middleton

My two biggest concerns:
1. While he proved he could play in the playoffs, I'm not convinced Malinski is a 2nd pairing defensemen. But finding an LD should be cheaper than an RD.
2. The bigger concern is, what kind of center are we getting if Girard was the centerpiece? Even if our 2027 1st was in play?

What if you move Girard for assets, after landing Provorov for that role. Might be a touch more expensive, but for me Girard at #3 seems like a weakness in the playoffs against heavier teams.

I also think he's "fine", but he still gets targeted as a guy that you wear down for those teams.

We're not getting a center worth shit. Maybe there is a fit for some team like NYI with a futures package though.

Edit..

Provorov might be a guy you could actually run next to Makar if you want to see if Toews can run his own pairing too.

If Girard could be moved for a 2C it would've happened already.

This is gonna make it sound like I’m bashing Girard again, but I’m really not. I just don’t get why CMac is willing to let so many players go, but Girard is always untouchable. I mean he’s a good puck moving d-man, but it’s not like he provides tons of offense or he’s great defensively. Prioritizing keeping Girard and his 5 mill cap space is puzzling to me. We could get a cheaper 2nd pair d-man to be solid defensively and use that cap space on something more important.

This must be CMac when he watches Girard do his spinoramas..

Please name some 2 pairing dmen that are cheaper than Girard and better.

You also aren't getting cheaper in FA

I know we are light on assets and cap space, but honestly I’d like to see them revamp the blue line. I’m good keeping Manson because he’s a playoff performer and Malinski should stay, but we need to change things up on the left side IMO

If we trade out Manson, and we spend on Lindgren and Perbix , all our dmen will be basically the same age. I don't see it happening but it would be interesting.

Toews(7.25m) Makar(9m)
Lindgren(4.5m) Perbix (3m)
Girard(5m) Malinski (950k)

I trade Girard 10 times out of 10 over Manson. Manson struggles in the regular season then goes nuts in the playoffs, where Girard is great in the regular season then falls apart in the playoffs.

Why are we assuming that Lindgren is going to be getting less than 6mil a year? Have you seen the prices on top 4 defensemen? With cap inflation and current market value, there's no way he signs a contract cheaper than G's. Unless he wants to sign a 1 year prove it contract, and that won't be with us, if he takes that path.

I actually first wrote both G and Manson.

A G Perbix pairing sounds good too, though.

It's a very safe assumption. I'm not sure which defensemen you're referring to, but the D who inked new UFA contracts at $6M+ are Chychrun, Hedman, Pionk, Slavin, and Theodore. All considerably better than Lindgren.

Borgen, Kovacevic, McCabe, and Middleton are all starting new contracts between $4.0-$4.51 next season. That's the range Lindgren should be in. FWIW, DailyFaceoff projects his next deal at $4.0x3.

Lindgren isn't touching 6M.

His analytics aren't great, he got traded by a team that was pushing for the playoffs, he struggled in our playoff series, and he has a LOT of mileage on his body for a 27 year old.

Not only that, but this UFA crop seems heavy on defensemen and light on impact forwards.

I can see Lindgren getting 4M per, maybe 4.5 from someone desperate but 6M? No way.

I never said it will be someone better, but it might just be a smallish downgrade if we replace Girard with someone cheaper, but we get a big upgrade at 2C

That has to have been Girard's last game as an Av, it just has to. It's not one mistake, its an accumulation and a track record. We've taken a long enough look.

Dumoulin is a UFA, he’s 33 so I don’t think he’ll cost too much. Maybe 3.5 mill or something. He’s not gonna get you points but he can be solid defensively and he has size. Pair him with Manson

It's hard to pull off but it would be a shrewd move if that nerd Cmac can trade off a guy like Girard or Colton for assets and sign a relatively competent and cheaper free agent as a replacement. We need assets more then ever and free agency if done right can be helpful.

It's pretty clear that you have zero understanding of why Girard's contract is so valuable.

There is no slight downgrade of a player on a cheaper deal. There are clear downgrades in players for cheaper contracts.

I get that the whole Girard size thing is an issue for some people, but I 1000% guarantee that anyone clamoring to move Girard, will get into a full "what happened to our defense rant" if he was ever moved.

Maybe it will be a clear downgrade as far as puck moving ability, but we might able to get someone cheaper who’s actually better in the d zone than Girard. Like along the boards and front net defending

Only players that are better than Girard in the d zone are first pairing caliber players. So, again, ain't going to be cheap.

Again, showing that you have zero understanding of why Girard is so valuable to the organization and are just sticking with this "small = bad at defense"
