Speculation: 2025 Off-season Thread

I am concerned that both have limitations, G it’s his size and only moderate offensive production, Manson it’s his age and health. Not sure either is enough to get a 2C strong 3c maybe and that could work w Coyle moving up not ideal but options are going to be limited

Manson is everything a contending team wants for a playoff run. Right handed, expiring contract, size, physical, won a cup, good teammate, everything.
Absolutely he is. Girard is also something that many teams that are rebuilding are looking for. Wouldn't Chicago like him? They have f*** all, in terms of skill at the backend for an example. Girard is something you really want for your regular season, as your #3 guy.

More news to piss you off. JT Miller did indeed nix any deal to other teams including Avs.

He was 100% dead set on living near and having his kid grow up with Trochecks kid. Trochecks kid is a mite who lives in upstate NY (right out NYC). One of the moms at my work kid plays on little Trochecks team. And that was the plan all along according to everyone in that hockey mom group. Sigh.

To be honest, the best moves the Avs could’ve made have already passed them by. The big move should’ve been to get Eichel back in 21-22. After that it should’ve been to get Horvat when he was going UFA. In typical Avs fashion they kept going cheap options until they had to be desperate. They could save a lot of assets by being proactive
Eichel himself said he thought he was being traded to Colorado right before the deal happened with Vegas.

Guessing Vegas upped their offer even though Krebs is truly heinous.

Watching how effective MacK and Horvat were together on the PP makes me more frustrated that they didn’t push for him more when he was going UFA. He skates well, shoots the puck and is good in faceoffs. Despite all that, there’s a good chance that Bednar and Bennett would’ve found a way to not make it work

It's the same play to the bumper that the Avs repeatedly try but it rarely works. They've tried it with Landeskog, Nichushkin, Lehkonen, Colton, etc. So yeah, there would be complaints about Bednar/Bennett regardless and probably some stuff thrown in there about MacKinnon being stupid and lazy. It's the HF way.

Trochecks wife whose part of the mom group. Obviously not "hockey" source you'd want. But they live in super bougie neighborhood outside NYC (Rye near Greenwich). Celebrities, doctors, finance, lawyers you know the type. Person at work whose son is on the team sees the mom at practice often and topic came up when Miller was traded back. We never had a shot. She knows I'm a huge Avalanche fan and I rock it at work so we got on the topic and Avs were on the no go list. Sigh. On a lighter side apparently Trochecks son is light years better then anyone on the team lol.

The difference is Horvat was able to get that shot off right away instead of holding onto it to try to pass it back to MacKinnon

What’s your proposed solution for 2C?

If I hear Coyle, I might shoot myself.

Honestly? I don't have one right now. I don't know who may be available on the trade market. I just fully believe a UFA contract to Nelson would further limit any chance of winning with what's left of MacKinnon and Makar's prime. I was all for the trade initially and thought he would be a good fit but that's all gone now.

No, not Coyle.

My guy, you gotta be realistic lol. The Avs have no tradeable assets unless you are making a mess in a different spot (Necas/Girard) and the UFAs are either not coming here or not better than Nelson.

It has to be him after what we gave up.

That's the sunk cost fallacy and just trouble waiting to happen. It's going to go down as one of, if not the, worst trade in CMac's tenure. Lets not make it worse.

I like Girard but I'd trade him, even while knowing it'd open up another hole. I'd also trade Necas if he's looking for anything over $9M/yr on an extension.

Sunk cost fallacy or not, Nelson is a proven 2C. Has been for years and years. If Bednar can't figure out how to make it work, then that's the guy who needs to go. We don't have the assets to find yet another different 2C.

Looks like Nelson doesn't want to stay

I wonder how much Bednar whining about having multiple lines to run his system influenced Mcfarland's decision to trade Mikko. Could be why they were so nitpicky about cap space so they could afford to have depth because they thought that was the winning formula, so they prioritized depth over superstar talent.

Of course if you used your brain for one sec to think about this, you'd see what a f*cking joke it is because when things aren't going well Bednar's security blanket is to over play his superstar talent 30 mins a game and completly throw away his system.

Like…?

UFAs Tavares and Bennett who would never sign here?

Or trade for somebody with the zero assets we have?
Tavares would be just as bad. 35 next season, and isn't a Bednar type guy. Bennett isn't really a Bednar type guy either, but I could see him working like Kadri did. My only fear would be regression after a payday. But the amount of teams that can outbid us there is a f*** ton.

I honestly think we should just scrap together what we have left, bite the bullet, trade for Kadri and right the timeline. Sign EJ as a coach or to a vet minimum, then try to ride the good vibes untill the trade deadline and see what happens. Also need to make sure that Colton is part of that deal. I don't think he has negative value, but he's being paid as a 3C and with Nuke and Landy already being pricey wingers, we need to move that contract. That is of course assuming we sign JD again.

I still think that roster is too old, but we have nothing left. Grasping at straws is all we can do.

The Avs are screwed with no 2C. But will also have no problem losing a team with a crappy or no 2C.
