Speculation: 2025 Off-season Thread

I have very little faith that the Avs will move on from the coaching staff.

MAYBE an AC change, but not more than that.

I get the apprehension on Necas from his track record in Carolina and his lukewarm series this season. But I'd also like to see what he can do away from Mack. Bednar was hellbent on them being together and they're too similar to really work that well (hence why I hope for a coaching change). I think he can do some damage on line 2 where he can drive play with Lando/Lehk and Nelson/Coyle/Whoever comes in, letting Mack roll with Lehk/Lando and Nuke

MacK-Nuke - ?
Necas - ? - Landy
LOC - Coyle - Lehk
Kivi - Kelly - Drury

Two big holes in the top 6. Bottom half of the roster looks ok.

Makar - Toews
? - G
Malinski - Manson

I also think G should go. And Manson is too injured to rely on for the full season.

So need an entire second pair.

With very little draft pick capital. And the Avs entire prospect pool is worth less than the UFA rights to Drouin.

Good luck Cmac.

Manson was by far our best d-man in the playoffs. Even if he misses bunch of regular season games, as long as we get that Manson in the playoffs it’s fine

Vancouver is a mess. Take a gamble and get Petersson. Necas + Girard in some sort of package. If I recall, Carolina had a deal for Petersson involving Necas before they got Rantanen. Petersson can very well be another Eichel 2.0. Since Cmac is such a gambler, put your big ol balls on the table and go big game hunting for a real center.

It's fine in terms of what he'll bring in the playoffs.

But the pressure it puts on Makar and Toews to consistently have two pathetic pairings when Manson is down is too much. He needs to be pushed down or they need a #5 who can play bigger minutes. Lindgren type but he may be too expensive.

Problem is, there isn't much available in UFA for D-Men this offseason. Zero interest in Ekblad for me. I feel like we're better off moving G and whatever to find a different middle pairing LD and keeping Lindgren for 3LD rather than gamble on UFA

Yup, I like what @The Pwnerer suggested. Necas+Girard for EP + pick or bottom of their roster player or something. Then re-sign Lindgren

Eh, at 11m I don't know if I want to gamble on EP getting his shit together. At least we know Necas is good in the regular season, especially if him and Mack get separated.

Yea, things are so f***ed at this point that you may as well commit to either fixing it or completely f***ing it over.

Yeah EP aside, I think this is true.

That was an incredibly deflating loss. Gotta change something up. Can't stick with this same group with Nelson at 2C.

They have to do something to give the players belief things could be different next year. They already have enough problems getting in their own heads.

Overpaying for a UFA, and using that position to trade a player on the team for a 2C, have seemed like an option to me for a bit. Girard and Necas seem like possibilities.

It's going to be a very challenging off season. I hope they have a good plan.

If Drouin signs for dirt cheap (which he ought to, because who the hell would pay him), then I say keep him around. When healthy, he's a good producer for the regular season and you need those guys too.
JD is a tough one for me. I love how he bought in and changed his game when he first got here. He definitely made me proud. But I really don't see him making much noise unless he's on MacKinnon's wing, and Bednar moved him off Nate's wing because he wasn't getting enough accomplished there. I just don't feel he's a fit for the bottom six, so I'm worried even about 3M for a guy I'm not convinced would be in my plans for the playoffs.

How do you sync that up? I completely get what you are saying about the regular season... but wouldn't he just be one more piece that needs to be taken care of by the deadline?

It’s surprising that people are ready to give up on Necas and Nelson considering JB never really gave them a real chance to flourish and the loss in value from acquiring those two. If for nothing else JB ought to be canned for that reason alone.

Had a weird reckoning this morning where I asked myself why I've spent my whole life watching professional sports when it ultimately amounts to little more than negative emotions above all. What a waste of time. I think this might be a big crossroads in my life where I need to evaluate why I've spent so much time and money on guys who don't even know me. We won the Cup in 2022 and what did that result in? How has my life been for the better at all? Damn. Watching sports is a f***ing waste of time, dude. It's really just hitting me today. Sorry to be such a bummer but what is the point of all this?
I'm waiting for MacKinnon and Makar to finish up before giving up hockey entirely. I'll be much happier never watching hockey again after them for sure. This sport is just a waste of time.

They're done son, In all honesty Mack is enjoying his life and Makar just doesn't have it

Fire Bednar. He is not capable of getting the best results from a variety of players, nor is he capable of seeing the efficacy, or lack thereof, in regard to specific player combos.

I don't get the dreamy dreams of Elias Pettersson. He's a soft puppy, and my bet is he'd want out of Denver before the first practice with Mack is over.

Sakic and higher ups have a tough call.

Something has to change before next season. You have give the players on the roster the hope that things will be different next year.

If you go into next season with the basic same roster and same coaching staff, you could see catastrophic results as the motivation to win will be completely gone. Why would the players try any harder next year if it's the same thing that has failed 3 years in a row? They won't, and there won't be hope of things being different this year.

If the coaching staff/GM is the same I could easily see 29 demanding a trade, he isn't going sit complacently and watch the ship sink.

8 probably will decide to go to UFA if there aren't changes.

Then what?

What basic same roster? Let's compare the start of next seasons roster to the start of this seasons roster once the summer has past.

I think Chet means same nucleus.

It’s the peripherals that will change, but all the main components are all still under contract.
