Red Sox Tied To Projected $88 Million All-Star Not Named Alex Bregman

The vast majority of the chatter swirling about the Boston Red Sox over the last few weeks has been about All-Star slugger Alex Bregman.

He is the most obvious fit for Boston in free agency and if the team is going to make a big move, it should be for him. He makes almost too much sense and immediately would take the Red Sox over the top.

If the Red Sox do end up missing out on him, there are other options out there who can help. One player who was suggested as a fit is former Baltimore Orioles slugger Anthony Santander by NBC Sports Boston’s Justin Leger.

“The Red Sox have a logjam in the outfield, so they'd have to either clear room for Santander or make the slugging switch-hitter their DH,” Leger said. “Are they willing to do that while outbidding teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels? It doesn't seem likely, but the thought of Santander's 40-homer power at Fenway Park is tantalizing.”

Santander clubbed 44 home runs in 2024 and his market value is projected to be just over $88 million over five years by Spotrac. That surely would be less than Bregman. There also have been rumors lately that he could be open to a short-term deal so this projection could end up being too high for him in general.

Absolutely devastating

I listened to him call the Brewers/Mets WC game and Alonso's homer just a few months ago and he was still sharp and on the ball. When you're 90 things can turn quickly.

I'm sad that he never saw the Brewers win a title. But he may have been baseball's greatest ambassador over his lifetime. True legend.

Really sad day for me. As a kid growing up in Milwaukee, before every game was televised, he was a huge part of my early baseball identity. He and Merle Harmon on the radio made the game always entertaining, especially in those early years when the team wasn’t very good. The 1982 World Series run with Harvey’s Wallbangers was Uecker at the top of his game. I was 15 at the time and remember his calls like it was yesterday.

I knew this day was gonna come eventually, but god damn, it still sucks.

As you know, @RoccoF14, I live in Milwaukee and while I'm not a Brewers fan, I listened to as many games as possible because of Ueck. He called a great game and there was always a moment when he made you laugh out loud.

My favorite moment was during the Rangers-Yankees playoff game in the '90s. I can't find the video. It was late in a close game. The cameras were showing tight head shots of the players and managers. Bob Costas calls out each of the names of those who are being shown.

Torre ... Oates ... Jeter ... Gonzalez ... Pettitte ...

Then the camera shows a wide shot of a full moon. Ueck says, "Don Zimmer."

If anyone gets a chance, check out Ueck's appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Absolute gold.

It's a bit dirty so I won't link it directly here, but everyone should look up Norm Macdonald and Artie Lange's story about hanging out with Bob Uecker.

"Do you even know who f***in' John Fogerty is?"
"Yeah, he did Credence Clearwater Revival"
"Yeah, he did all that f***in' shit!"

Honestly, might be a genius. Make up a bunch of rumors, then throw water on them before you're proven incorrect, and gaslight everyone over the origination of those rumors. That Mick guy could learn a thing or two from him.
