Red Sox/MLB 2025 Off-Season Hot Stove II - Alex Bregman in agreement with the Boston Red Sox

Define give away. I don't think they are gonna dump him when is value is lower than it was a year ago just to get rid of his bizarre presence/persona. I think it makes more sense for them to communicate with him and stress the importance of this season after what was a lost year for him last year. Now if they get blown away with an offer? Yep I am listening. I don't see it happening right now though.

They're gonna give him away in a bad deal where they get like 30 cents on the dollar.

I have been screaming for years that teams are better off giving higher AAVs on short term deals, and yet this organization (whom I was still defending just two years ago) has broken me so much I don't give one shit about this deal.

I'm not actually sure there's any one thing they could do to make me care right now. Even our highly rated prospects I've been excited to see no longer interest me.

Apathy sucks.

I am enjoying the idea of Chaim Bloom desperately trying to offload Arenado and then not being able to or not pulling the trigger on what is being offered.

The Athletic's Jayson Stark surveyed 32 baseball execs for his Spring Training preview.

The Red Sox beat out the Yankees to win the "Most Improved AL Team" category.

The survey was taken before the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman.

But unlike 99 percent of the folks walking around Boylston Street for most of this offseason, our voters saw enough good stuff happening to look past the cash registers. Here’s a sampling of how they viewed the Red Sox, even before they wound up signing Bregman:
• “Are the Red Sox back? I think they are.”
• “(Now) they can finally look in the mirror and say they can compete for real.”
• “Their young guys are legit. They’re about to get into a really fun stretch.”
How do you lose Juan Soto and almost win most improved team? Ridiculous

Feels like a win-win for Bregman on that. If it's closer to 3 yrs / 90M in present day value, shaving off 10M a year, and he gets that paid out after he retires, that's some nice guaranteed income for him, while still taking home 30Mish for however many years he chooses to stay w/ Boston.
THis is the new baseball. Deferred payments and these high AAV short term. It makes it even harder for the smaller markets to compete now

Yesterday, after reading that he preferred a short term contract, I was going to post almost the contract that he now agreed to. 3 years, 2 opt outs after each year, but I thought 90m-100m would be more in line, 120 is a lot. But hey, at least they are finally spending.

Not sure the contract lines up with the window for this team, and it goes to show again that they shy away from long term contract, but if Cora uses him at 3B - as he should - the defensive value alone will make this team much better. It's going to improve the pitching and defense beyond the individual WAR of Bregman.

Ok, with the deferred money, it's actually in the 90m range. That's fine by me.

"Most improved"

They're the Red Sox and even after Bregman they're projected to 85 wins!

What the f*** are we even doing? Could they exceed that? Of course, every team in baseball can, that's why they're projections and bell curves exist. But people are talking like they just built a juggernaut, when all they did was make themselves a 3rd Wild Card contender.

Not a Sox fan, but I really like what they've done over this past winter. They had some glaring issues with that roster and they went out and addressed them. With the exception of that Chapman signing, I like the moves they've made. I think 85.5 wins is a real solid bet right now.

They still have some work to do with that bullpen but they've got the ammo to add. Either now or at the deadline, if needed.

The bar has been lowered so much. Imagine this in 2004. They would be getting destroyed. But now the nerds back them up with this mentality and here we are with being told to clap and cheer on "Good job, good effort".

Mike I will gladly wallow in misery and frustration with you...stay strong! I will forever enjoy the misery of Boston sports fans no matter how good it's been for us.

That you are not a Red Sox fan proves your response that you don't understand the mediocre effort and spending by a team that consitently leads MLB in revenue and up till yesterday was out spent by the Homeless A's and the Angels this off season.

Oh I understand the mediocre effort and spending over the past couple of seasons. What I don't understand is the INCREASE in anger when they finally DO spend some money to address a need, instead of continuing to stand pat.

Like I said before, if you guys wanna continue to hate on ownership, knock yourselves out....

Because we know not to go start planning the parade because we are supposed to treat signing Bregman like they just signed Soto.

As long as this ownership makes the most money, charges the highest ticket prices and continues to be cheap I will sure keep holding them in contempt.

Enjoy your brick.

Bregmans numbers are pretty crummy for 40 mil per year. But he should be OK lower in the lineup and compliment the kids.

I want Anthony Mayer and Campbell all in the lineup by Memorial Day.

If they move him to 2nd base, are they really filling a need?

Could've just kept mookie. 10x the player and would've signed for less than $40MM.
