SJ retained $9.7mil in the Hertl trade, didn’t they?
somewhere between 8.35m on the high end 7m on the low end. they retained for 6yrs, but that 6th year, you'd have to find how many days were left in the season at the time of the trade to get the actual #, plus how much was left of his real salary.

If there was 60 days left in the season (assuming 190 days for the whole NHL season) with his 10m salary that year. he would have been owed 3.157m from the TD to End of season
They retained 17%, so roughly 530k on top of the 6.937 from the 1,387,500 they retain each of the 5yrs after.
So 7.4m (ish) is the total

You are missing a year iirc.
He was traded in the 23-24 season, so that and until 29-30 season

Edit: assuming the ballpark of the 530k for the remaining 23-24 season, it would come out to $8,85mil.

Point being that they didn’t really get jack shit for it.

You're right, i shorted it a year.

They got in effect 2 1st round picks out of it, an actual 1st round and a recent 1st round prospect(Edstrom).
They also gave up 2 3rd picks in that trade, and Edstrom doesn't look very promising but the SHL is weird

So not trade rumor exactly but I saw a rumor from I think it was Nick Kypreos said it is believed the stars have an offer for Johnston for 8 years and 8.125 per. So how does that line up with their cap if that is true.

We would be in good shape if that were true. I have a feeling he’ll be asking for more though.

i would take that in a heartbeat. WJ is the best player on the team outside of miro imo. jrob and roope are in the convo, but both come with significant risks (injury/skating).

Smart. He should sign a bridge deal then get a crazy deal when the Cap has skyrocketed over the next couple of seasons
Personally I hope they settle in around 8.5m.
Bit of an overpay currently, but if he does a bridge you're probably not getting him less than 10m in a couple years (if his trajectory holds)

I still have a Massive worry of an offer sheet coming to Wyatt.

Like I've said I think the main reason Nill only wants FAs is so his cap is clear to handle any offer sheet concerns for Johnston.

I do think Dallas will be able to match any big offer that comes, but could change the landscape of their cap room.

Hope I'm wrong and he is signed suitable to both Dallas and Him

I’m not worried. Dallas will match anything unless it’s the price where they receive 4 1sts. This isn’t Connor McDavid so I doubt a team will give up that many assets for him.

A reasonable bridge wouldn’t be the worst thing. Two more years and Seguin is off the books then the cap looks to bounce to $113mil.

Adds flexibility to win now and then pay him & co later. Maybe we can put up a competitive team then too, but at least try to win in the next 2-3 years. Cap is also likely to keep growing.

Yes but linking to this year's trade deadline, if you bring in big contracts that carry into next season it potentially creates a risk for what you have to do to keep Wyatt and a higher resigned price...which is why I think Nill will be true to his word of either FAs or bringing in low cost cap hit players at most.

Yeah, sounds like he’s not trading for anyone with term.

And apparently he turned it down... 👀

I think there's some expectation that players aim to have a contract as long as possible. So they want to get to 26/arbitration eligibility before taking a long term deal.

Hintz, Oettinger and Robertson (and even Jamie Benn) have all taken pretty sane bridge deals to get them to about 26-27. I'll guess that Robertson will sign an 8 year deal eventually.

Wyatt should take a 5x8 or something deal to be in prime position to slingshot his way til the mid 30s. Anything beyond ~26 is Nill trying to buy FA years at a discount, and none of the agents are that dumb.

I do wonder why Harley didn't take a 3 year deal, but I guess the expectation is that D men last a lot longer in the NHL.

I think they also all know that Nill has never moved a player who has committed long term to the organization early. I think the only one he's really ever moved at that point was Reilly Smith, and I'd bet you a dollar that was a business decision in order to get Tyler Sequin (because the girls love shiny)
