Pronman today:
50% of scouts he talked to have Schaefer at 1
20% have Hagens
20% have Martone
And then you have some who like McQueen and Misa there.

Other two names he mentioned that can push for the 5th spot are Desnoyers and Frondell.

I know people always drools at the thought of having star franchise center (rightfully so) but they are very hard to get unless you draft top overall in a very good draft year when there is one available for instance we missed twice with Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi. Otherwise forget it you won't get one. That being said, I think you can compete for a cup even without a franchise center but to do that you need 4 very good centerman that can share the loads offensively and are very good defensively. Boston and the Blues did it. IMO having a very balanced center line of Suzuki, Desnoyers, Hage and Beck would be exactly that. They have all have decent offensive attributes but they would also all be very reliable defensively. In that way, our franchise forward could be on the wing with Demidov we would also have very good other
good offensive winger in Caufield, Laine, Slafkovsky.
You need at least, an elite selke level 2 way Center to win if you don’t have a superstar (and even if you have a superstar).

Look at the last winner: Bergeron/ROR/Barkov/Toews/Crosby

We don’t have that yet, can Desnoyers be that kind of player ? I think he can (maybe not at the level of those guys offensively though)

If we're out of the top 4 running, I hope we can get Frondell or Desnoyers. No interest in McQueen unless we're around #10 and he's a faller.

We'll know a lot more 5 weeks and see how poorly we fair with our treacherous schedule.

After that group it'd be Eklund Smith and Spence.

You know you contradicted yourself in your own post. The Habs didn't draft Suz. He came to us in a trade.

Where did I claimed we drafted him?

I said having 4 great center / two way type can be an effective way to win over having a dominant center. I just mentioned we tried to get the 'franchise' center through the draft before with top 5 picks and we failed twice with KK and Galchenyuk.
Suzuki is not what I would call a franchise center either. He is though sufficient if we have good depth, that was my point. I am aware we got him in a trade.

You said you can't get a franchise center unless you draft one. It all depends on what you mean by franchise centerman. I consider Suzuki a franchise centerman and we traded for him. We didn't draft him. We don't necessarily have to draft one, we can also trade for one. Offensively Nick is a top 15 center in the league and has been the last few years and that's playing on a bottom feeder team . Defensively, he is among the best.
