I’m split between Misa and Martone…
It might change but Misa might be better point producer but Martone might be better for the playoff grid.
Only reason Id take Misa over Martone is to potentially supplant Suzuki as the 1C. Not sure how much hes played at centre, though...... Dach can move to the wing or be the 3C.

Misa-Demidov... oh man

Dach has question marks as a center, but he's definitely top 6. You ommit to mention Slaf and Demidov because it doesn't fit the narrative you poorly built. Caufield on exploitation duty is just as important as who you put on your top line in the playoffs. Your argument about Caufield brings nothing to the conversation because it pretends we don't have someone to take his place on the top line. We do, his name is Ivan Demidov.

Wingers are a strenght compared to what we have at center and on defense.

Salivating over Andersson won't magically make it happen. With the limited amount of top 4 RD in the league, teams will be lining up to acquire him. Pinning your hopes on a miraculous acquisition is not how you build a team. Drafting for need is not how you build a team either.

As for Laine, if he doesn't stay, he'll probably bank us another 1st pick, which will be used to fill up our bank, but Dach could easily be our 4th (out of 4) top 6 winger.

Going forward, Slaf, Suzuki, Demidov and Caufield are sure fire top 6 player. That’s it.

Dont waste time on Laine, Newhook Dach. They are all question mark and maybe even be here long term.

But I don’t want to be a hypocrite. I was there in the 2024 draft… I would have been bummed if we took a LD with our pick, but we didn’t have an elite offensive prospect and I didn’t see probable 1D or elite top pair D last draft. I see it in Schaefer and it changes everything for me. I presume debate starts with the evaluation of players. I don’t see hutson or Guhle as a 1D on a Stanley cup team and i think it’s easier to trade for top6 winger(less valuable) than a 1D. I like Guhle, but he can be a really good trading chip (and injuries may be a concern)

We need a center equal or better than Suzi , so badly , the only top 6 C prospect in the org is Hage , need another top 6 C dart here.

C or D for me , although if we get a top 3 pick I suppose its tough to not go BPA with the winger but I'd rather not.

I'd definitely go Misa or Hagens before Martone but the season is long lots of hockey to play

Thank god you're not the GM
I really dont see Laine re-signing given his injury proneness. Hes obviously going to want 7 years, and as a UFA he wont be cheap (unless hes injured again into next season).

Hughes is going to have enough big RFA contracts to worry about in the next 4 years (Hutson, Demidov, 2025 pick, Dach, Mailloux, Reinbacher, etc). Adding an expensive UFA will just cause massive cap problems long term again. Better to spend on a decent UFA WHEN they are acutal contenders.

Drafting schaeffer means Guhle will be a forever RD. It would be stupid to runhave Hutson on third paid LD if not.

Our defence has enough youth in it and Reinbacher/Mailloux aint event there yet. We need good RD veterans. Like Andersson.

Guhle-Andersson
Hutson-Parayko? Something like that
Xhekaj-Reinbacher(to ease him into lineup)

Therefor, i’m against drafting Schaeffer even though he looks good. Get us a big top dogs on our top6.
What's wrong with Guhle playing RD long term? It's clear he's capable of it. He's not going to be playing with Matheson forever and he likely won't be on our top-pairing regardless of which side he's playing on. I think his versatility is an asset, not an issue we need to rectify.

I like Schaefer a lot more than I thought I would.

Shaeffer is the best player of this draft by far for me so far...he has everything for 1D.

Poise
offense
Shot
Sjating
Iq
Strength
Vision.

The dude will turn 18 next September...
He is a full year younger thN Martone.

Shaeffer will be a Norris candidate in a near future and we don't have a real first d in our prospects including Guhle and Hutson.

I have Misa second

As I said....Schaefer right now. But after reading some other arguments, Misa would be something else as well. We need a true #1 centre. I think Suzuki is a #2 on a championship team.

A couple scenarios for the future.

Schaefer....

Slaf - Suzuki - Caufield
Laine - Dach - Demidov
Newhook - Hage - Heinemen

Schaefer - Guhle
Hutson - Rein
Xhekaj - Mailloux

Misa.....

Slaf - Misa - Demidov
Laine - Suzuki - Caufield
Newhook - Hage - Dach

Guhle - Mailloux
Hutson - Rein
Xhakaj - Barron

Gotta trust the scouts ultimately. Both options look fantastic.

Brady Martin, C, scored a hat trick last night vs Erie, and is rounding into form and now has 10 goals.

He missed a big chunk of last season with an injury.

Martin was a 3rd overall pick in the ‘23 draft right behind Schaefer.

Skilled, sturdy and plays a 200-foot game. There’s also some dawg in him.

If Habs second 1st rounder is not high enough for Desnoyers or another plum, Martin might be a nice option.

I’ll see him plenty this winter and hope he continues to come on. Will post occasionally on him.

This team is atrocious defensively, I'd be happy to get Schaefer. Even if the Habs don't pick high enough to get him, I'd hope there is some good, solid defensive prospects with the other first round pick.

Three wishes from the genie bottle…

One of them would be to be able to skate like Schaefer and terrorize a beer league.

“Who the F is this guy?”

“So long, suckers!!!”

Drafting Schaeffer doesn’t mean Guhle has to play RD. We can do what Tampa did and have a ridiculous left-side like Hedman/Sergachev/McDonagh and fill the right-side with unspectacular but safe/reliable defenseman.

Our version would be

Schaeffer
Guhle
Hutson

Having a guy who you can trust to carry a pair on each pairing also mean you don’t have to over-rely on 1-2 guys and you can spread their ice-time and keep them fresh throughout the season.

Play Hutson a bit less than Schaeffer/Guhle at 5v5, give him all offensive and neutral zone start. Something like 16-17 mins a night at 5v5 but give him ALL the PP time.

No way they would waste Schaefer on the 2nd pair and as a RD. He is the closest thing to #1 LD as you can get.

Most likely (IMO) and this is assuming no trade or free agents.

Schaefer - Reinbacher
Guhle - Mailloux
Hutson - Xhekaj/Barron/Engstrom/Struble
Nahhh Hutson is a beast

Hutson - Reinbacher
Schaefer - Guhle
Wifi - Mailloux-Struble

Crosbyshow...I am with you...Shaeffer's young age and great ability on the blue line to generate offense is too good to resist.
