2025 NHL Entry Draft Thread

Thought I'd start this now. The Caps currently have their own pick (TBD) in rounds 1, 4, and 5, the 37th pick from the Bruins in round 2, and the Hurricanes 3rd round pick.

I am also going promote my current favorite potential draftee of the week: Vaclav Nestrasil. His numbers are a tiny bit underwhelming, but he's shown significant improvement through out the season and has continued to do so in the playoffs:

Size checks out. Will try to check out some of the Clark Cup between him and Ryabkin.

Canada is currently playing Slovakia in the U18 semis (0-0 through 20). Jackson Smith, Cole Reschny, Ben Kindel, Jack Nesbitt, Braeden Cootes and Cameron Schmidt among many suiting up. Brady Martin was ejected for a late hit.

Intriguing. The pick right before my current favorite in the 2nd round Zharovsky.

Terrible strategy, to draft for current positional need. Especially on D where the development is a long ways out. What if the draft has really weak RD prospects? Take one anyway and let your rivals draft better players?

I continue to be thankful you're not in the FO.

RD isn't a strength in this draft after Mrtka, Hensler and Fiddler. I don't think there are any other first rounders. There are a couple early seconds perhaps but unlikely to be near as stellar a value as Hutson was a year ago. Better to go BPA and high upside at both spots...even if it ends up being another couple of wingers.

Ideally I'd rather add an industrious middle six center type that can PK, defend at a high level and is smart enough to compliment their developing wingers. That could really tie a bow on what they've got cooking up front. Ilya Protas did play center this season. Thomas broke out. Lapierre is still around to be sorted. But that's the position I'd earmark and, realistically, the more plentiful option with the likes of Nesbitt, Zonnon, Gastrin and McKinney. Their offensive upside may be less than some of the wingers in that range but 200 foot ability, reliability and versatility is all valuable.

I'd think about trading up for Reschny. He could be that finalizing all situations center that enables three pretty deadly scoring lines. I don't know how high he may go but he's not in McKenzie's recent top 16 so...he seems like perhaps the best value proposition at the moment.

Sweden gets its revenge and will play for gold. USA competed but aside from Fiddler I'm not sure they have any other '25 first rounders. Even Fiddler it revolves mainly around his size/handedness more than being highly skilled or really controlling the game.

BPA with the first pick [slightly weighted towards C or RHD but if a LHD or W is clearly ahead take them anyway] and then BGA (best goalie available) with the second pick is my hope for this draft. There's several early 2nd round goalies who look promising.

I like what I’ve seen from Magnus Gästrin in U-18 so far. 2-way Centerman coming up through the MoDo youth system (Sedin’s, Hedman, P.Forsberg, Näslund). Ranked around the Caps first two picks.

Filip Ekberg was a projected 3rd but he’s got 10 g 8 a in 6 games in the u18s, in the gold medal game tonight, constant threat vs USA

Lots of post-U18, pre-lotto content. Lakovic & Spence seem like a couple wingers up their alley if they slide. Otherwise Zonnon/Gastrin/McKinney would be fine value Cs. Ryabkin, Nestrasil, Reid, Zharovsky, Murtagh, Ravensbergen, Moore, Potter, Ihs-Wozniak and maybe someone like Wang (as a longer-term play) seem like the main pool of talent in that late 20's, late 30's range. With Boston's second being so high they should stick to their board, as they're bound to be in a position to get someone with a first round grade. First round this year may not be a high bar compared to some years but I'd resist thinking they need to grab a RD or goalie at 37. If it lines up, sure, but it seems likely to leave some value on the board.

Big picture, depending on how the playoffs play out I'd also have to think these picks should be on the table for an immediate boost wherever needed (3C standing out most glaringly).

Thoughts on Horcoff?

Horcoff, the son of former NHLer Shawn Horcoff, was doing just OK to start the year at the U.S. NTDP. He left midseason to join Michigan where his game took off from that point, making a real difference for his team at the college level as a U18 player. He's a very skilled big man who can make small-man-type plays in tight areas. He sees the ice at a high level and has a creative offensive mind. Horcoff is also good enough in the hard areas and can play the body when he needs to. The issues in his game at the top level will all come down to pace. I've seen slower 6-foot-5 guys, but his first few steps are going to be a struggle in the NHL. The rest of his game is good enough, though, that I see a projected middle-six winger.

If Skating is his big knock, that seems like our specialty to clean up and strengthen him into a complete player. Could he be that 3C we've been after?

He's going to be a project, so if we need a 3C within the next 4 season, he's not the answer.

I would be hesitant to take any player who played on the 2007's NTDP team in round 1, including Horcoff and Potter. Something was very wrong with that team, but I don't know what.
