2025 NHL Entry DRAFT Thread

The NFL fixes this problem. Playoff teams are draft seeded based on the round they are eliminated - by record for that playoff round. That's how the NHL should be.

I'll keep saying this, team drafting right after us will get the better player. lol. But in all seriousness Best player available. Whoever that may be. Our farm needs so much help.

With Dallas beating Colorado and Winnipeg beating St. Louis, one of them is guaranteed to make the final four.

So the Kings pick will be 24-27. It's impossible to have all four semifinalists be below them in the standings.

Ottawa also has to forfeit a 1st rounder either this draft or next. They're slated to have #21 so it might make sense to give up a later pick in a meh draft rather than gamble on what is supposed to be an above average class next year.

Unless they have an inkling that the league might reduce the penalty like they did with the Devils/Kovalchuk. But at any rate, the Kings pick might move up a spot although #21 might officially be listed as forfeited.

Devils forfeited #69 in 2011 as part of the Kovalchuk penalty.

There's a presale for the draft here in LA, tickets going for about $83 after fees.

Having attended the 2010 draft, I'd suggest anyone interested in going to save their money. It's extremely boring being in attendance. It's much better watching from home.

Definitely got some sticker shock after my buddy texted me that price. Even as a draft geek, I may decide to skip this one especially with the teams staying home this year. Half of the fun of 2010 was running into random hockey ops people in and around the arena.

I wish they would simulcast one of the draft broadcasts in person to fill the time between picks, but at least they reduced the 'clock' to 3 minutes in recent years so things have moved along a little quicker. 2011 was terrible as Canadian teams had 11 of the 30 first rounders and TSN interviewed each of them which was a big speed bump.

I always thought the happy medium might be watching Round 1 at home and then dropping by for a few hours on Saturday morning for Day 2. Probably a few 1st rounders still hanging out to support their 2nd day teammates and I'm not usually doing anything that interesting Saturday 9am-lunch. I think my buddy said the Day 2 ticket was $30 something.

I think some teams were getting the sneaky feeling they were being spied on/tapped

I was always curious if teams couldn't help but look at another team's list as they were walking by. I'm sure teams do their best to hide their paperwork but I laughed when I rewatched the 1997 Draft and the broadcast did an extreme closeup of Dallas' list.

But it seemed like there was always some degree of loose lips. St. Louis had a fun draft floor video for 2007. It showed them trying to move up from #9 for Jakub Voracek. The next target was Lars Eller so they thought they could move down to #13 and still get him. They were mapping how the next handful of picks were going to go and somebody at their table emphatically said "Carolina's all over [Brandon] Sutter at #11."

There was that one year where some Tampa staffer lost their list / notebook at a coffee shop or something. If I recall correctly, some random fan found it and offered to return it in exchange for stuff and Tampa told him to buzz off.

Man I'm torn .. I was planning a trip to LA for the draft .. but I'm worried about the new format .. but also .. what if it's good .. haha life's hard
The biggest benefit you'll have is getting to see some of the top prospects in person. Not sure if you'll have a chance to meet them after they take their pictures and meet with the media (I'm a "sit my butt down during the event and not explore" type, so I can't say what you will be able to do).

If you find that appealing, you should go for it. There may be other events or opportunities for fans, but I don't know for certain.

Been to 2 drafts...1995 in Edmonton(Berg,MacLean and Rosa) and 2000(Frolov,Lilja and Visnovsky)) in Calgary both were road trips but not lengthy ones...they both were a blast and I even got some autographs from players that never turned into anything special...fun just the same

In 2011, my buddy and snuck into the player's section. Definitely a palpable sense of nervousness and excitement. We had done our fantasy league draft the week before and my buddy was talking about how he didn't think Mika Zibanejad had high offensive upside. Meanwhile he didn't realize Zibanejad was sitting right in front of us. We were also unknowingly sitting among Phil Danault's group, so when he got picked everybody jumped up and celebrated like it was The Price is Right. On the flip side, Brandon Saad was on the other side of the aisle and sweating out the last picks of the first round.

Not nearly as fun if you were sitting in the upper deck. Hopefully the NHL/teams send notable emissaries to announce the picks. It was a fun change of pace last year to get a couple celebrities involved plus the usual amount of famous alumni.

Unless you're a big photo/autograph person, there might not be as much allure this year.

New York Islanders win the 1st overall pick in the lottery. San Jose wins second overall.

So picks 1-16 are:
1. Islanders
2. Sharks
3. Blackhawks
4. Mammoth
5. Predators
6. Flyers
7. Bruins
8. Kraken
9. Sabres
10. Ducks
11. Penguins
12. Penguins (originally the Rangers)
13. Red Wings
14. Blue Jackets
15. Canucks
16. Canadiens (from Calgary)

Every year there would be threads about why the NHL doesn't show the lottery drawing live with the implication that it was rigged in some back room. I'd always respond that a live drawing wouldn't make for great TV and the average dull fan wouldn't understand the 14 ball method. Sure enough most of the main board seemed confused and didn't like the presentation.

Cobbling together a mock draft and the team most affected by the results is seemingly Buffalo. They go from #7 to #9. BPA might be another small finesse winger that they don't need and maybe no natural trade partners.

Can I buy stock in Pittsburgh taking Brady Martin at #11?

If Ottawa keeps the pick, #17-21 are also locked in. Also the Rangers pick was top 13 protected, so they'll have up until June 25 (48 hours before the draft) to decide whether to send that one or defer to an unprotected 2026 1st. That will probably throw a monkey wrench into mock drafts until they decide.

17. Montreal
18. Calgary (via NJD)
19. St. Louis
20. Columbus (via MIN)
21. Ottawa

I've said for years that I would love if the NHL did a yearly documentary on the draft and the days leading up to it. Like the Hard Knocks series on HBO but for the league instead of one team.

I'd love that for sure. Gare Joyce wrote a fun book called "Future Greats and Heartbreaks" where he got to ride shotgun with Columbus for the 2006 and 2007 Drafts. Moreso for 2007, he tried to be a scout that year to get a sense of what that was like. In the opening chapter, he mentioned that he approached multiple teams and was declined by everybody except Columbus.

Basically teams were a little scared of letting info get out like when Philadelphia accidentally leaked some version of its draft board in 2013. Not sure if it would altered things much when Columbus traded Sergei Fedorov to Washington at the 2008 deadline, they got back a prospect named Theo Ruth (#46 in 2007) who they had ranked in their top 30 for 2007.

Columbus GM Doug MacLean would have a second career in broadcasting, so he valued the entertainment aspect more than say a Lou Lamoriello would.

Columbus also had one of the first behind the scenes things I can remember a team producing in 2005. Their scouts celebrated when Minnesota took Benoit Pouliot at #4 which guaranteed them at least one of Gilbert Brule or Anze Kopitar at #6. Unfortunately for them they chose the wrong guy.

Thankfully that footage still exists on YouTube.

Future Greats and Heartbreaks is a fantastic book. I recommend and draft geek reading it at least once.

Phil Kessel was torn apart for his interview at the combine. A healthy reminder that these are kids.

Currently LA is at 26, (LA will have a higher pick than Carolina because even if Carolina loses in the 2nd round they won their Division) But if either Florida or Edmonton advances to the Conference Finals, LA moves up for each one. Go Florida ( LA gets 25th pick) , Go LV ( I'll sacrifice the one spot for Edmonton to lose ).

Carolina finished 2nd in their division.

It took me a couple days to find this screenshot from a Montreal video a few years back. A handful of teams will release some generic pre-draft prep videos.

I think the Kings have done some draft videos before too. None of them too in depth, but sort of highlights of the days. I love that shit. Comprehensive things made by the league would be amazing. I understand why teams would be reluctant to do it, but for fans...what a great thing to showcase.

I really enjoyed this draft floor video from Columbus in 2015. I can only imagine the other teams weren't thrilled with their offers being floated.

Toronto contacted Columbus as a contingency plan in case their guy (Marner) wasn't available. Toronto offered #4 for #8, #34, #38, and #58. It isn't mentioned in the video, but I believe Toronto's backup target was Matt Barzal in a world where they don't have Auston Matthews yet. Columbus had a slight preference of Noah Hanifin instead of Zach Werenski but they thought Toronto's asking price was too much. The two teams would link up later in the first round with Toronto trading #29 to Columbus for #34 and #68.

New Jersey offered #6 to Columbus for #8, #34, and #129. Devils probably figured Columbus was aiming for a D and might be interested in leapfrogged Philadelphia for Ivan Provorov. But Columbus preferred Werenski so they stayed put.

Absolutely loved that. More of these things from every team. Again, it'll never happen but I love to watch this stuff.
