Now I can die in peace
It's not about the existence of other Russians on the team. It's whether or not Russian players being willing to take a pay cut and play in a lesser league with the uncertainty of ever playing in the NHL.
And compare that with the opportunity to play hockey professionally in your home country for more money.
The NHL had 51 players from Russia play at least 1 game in the regular season this year.
If I remember correctly too, Russia refused to sign the transfer agreement between the NHL and European countries. Usually, money gets paid out to these other countries, as they spent time and money to train and develop these players.
So, the long story short is compared to other European countries, Russia and North America get into bidding wars for Russian talent.
The Kings may draft him. I'm not saying it's impossible. But they have a hard time getting Russian prospects to come over.
It makes sense for the Kings to not really target Russians.
Many are under contract with their Russian clubs into their 20's, and others would prefer to play in Russia until they are very close to being NHL ready.
That doesn't really jibe with the Kings philosophy for developing young players.
