I know its probably not someone on a lot of peoples radar and we would likely be better off going with a skater but talking about someone we could slow cook with a high ceiling. Josh Ravensbergen is a big lanky 6'5 goalie playing for Prince George this year that really caught my eye this season. Despite his big frame he is really athletic and moves really well in the crease. Makes those athletic second saves but coming from a bigger kid is impressive. Has some issues with rebound control but that can be worked on. The more interesting thing is he is a right catching goalie in a league dominated by left catching goalies so that could be something that could throw shooters off a bit.

He's expected to be the first goalie off the board this year so no idea where he ends up slotting but if he's available at 28 I wouldn't mind if we take a swing. We can afford to let him bake. 2 more years in junior then a couple years in minors and he could be coming up and learning from Helle by the end of Helles contract. Sky seems to be the limit with this kid as he has Helles size and positioning but with Prices athleticism. Seems like the kind of combination that with the right guidance could be a force and possibly a team Canada goalie of the future. Plus he has a cool name.
I don't ever see the Jets picking a goalie in the 1st round. I think they should take at least one goalie in every draft, but it's not in their M.O to take one early.

I believe Mason West played RW this year, but normally plays C. He's my top preference for a big C at 28.

Horcoff is definitely a big C but might be more in a defensive mould.

Gastrin would be a safe pick, he's got the defensive acumen and some upside too, but he's more average in size.

I like the upside of local boy Paupanekis. I think his production is gonna pop next season on his way to the Memorial Cup, with Iginla on his wing. He's always rated below the 1st round, so a bit of a stretch at 28.

Highest we have ever drafted a goalie is 2nd round 59th overall. Of all of the goalies we have drafted only 1, maybe 2 have truly panned out so far. I think taking a swing at 28th overall wouldn't be to much of an issue. Who knows if he's on their radar. Not having a 2nd this year makes it tougher as well to take a goalie in the 1st.

If they did I wouldn't be opposed to it, but would understand if they would have reservations about it.

Just avoid Sascha Boumedienne and Im happy, Stanley 2.0 but even worse mobility. Cameron Reid feels like Jet typ of D-man, but doubt he is left when the run on D-men starts. If Jets decide Lambert is a better winger,, draft a center or any D-man outside of Sascha...
Doesn't scream Stanley to me.....

Goalies are so voodoo. If we were rocking a bunch of 2nd rounders as well as our 1st, Id say go for it.
At this stage if there is nothing of interest at 28, I'd be OK trading back and trying to get a few more darts to throw. Clean up some of thr depth fodder we are never going to use as well. Trade Stanley, Heinola, Gus etc. Move on and get some more pics, even if they are later. Try and recover a 2nd by trading Schenn at 1/2 retained and resign Miller. He was so much better and seemed to fit in well.

Flyers have 7 picks before the middle of the 2nd round

IF we traded back for the CBJ and CGY picks, the names in the 35-55 range aren't much of a drop-off:

Cole Mckinley, C
Simon Wang, LHD
Shane Vansaghi, C/RW
Luca Romano, RW
Alex Huang, RHD
Mason West, C
William Horcoff, C
Henry Brzustewicz, RHD

Better off with two of those than a Logan Hensler?

Goalies are only voodoo because you can't look at a stat sheet and say this guy could be an NHLer based on his numbers. You actually have to get eyes on them, watch how they play, how they handle pressure. That throws a lot of armchair stat based scouting for a loop because they don't really know what makes a good goalie just that they can't use their numbers to predict who will become a good goalie. The fact of the matter is most of the top tier goalies in the league are found within the top 3 rounds.

Vasilevsky - 19th
Oettinger - 26th
Markstrom - 31st
Demko - 36th
Gibson - 39th
Blackwood - 42nd
Stolarz - 45th
Gustavsson - 55th
Hill - 76th
Sorokin - 78th
Binnington - 88th

Fans think the Jets just throw darts at the board hoping one sticks but they do their due diligence when scouting for a goalie. They will do the same with Ravensberg and if they deem him to be good enough I don't see why they wouldn't take him.

after pouring through the data for a good 7-8 minutes, it does seem like 2nd to 4th round is the sweet spot for drafting goalies. probably more confirmation bias when you miss on a goalie with your first pick as opposed to a skater. but if the Jets aren't enamoured by the options at 28 and like Ravensberg, the timing is good for developing a top rated goalie.

This is perhaps the first year when it might make sense to draft a goalie with a higher level pick. There's 5-6 year window for development before a major role as Hellebuyck's replacement. But it's a long-range investment with pretty low success probabilities. But that's sort of what you'd expect from a 28th pick.

I have no doubt that teams do their diligence when it comes to scouting. I was just indicating (in my previous posts), that the Jets picking a goalie in the 1st few rounds really isn't in their M.O. If Ravensbergen is available at 28 and he's BPA, I'm fine taking him, I just dont see it happening as he will either probably be off the board at the time or the Jets aren't comfortable spending a 1st on a goalie. We definitely need a high end G prospect though, that much I will admit.
I only say goalies are voodoo in the fact that it's a position strongly based on confidence. Some have the mental fortutude and are able to build on that confidence, especially considering the length of time it takes to develop. It's got to be grueling on the psyche. It takes a special individual to be a goalie.
I still think we need to clear the deck of our depth fodder that we are not going to play. Stanley, Heinola, Gus etc. Turn them into mid to late draft picks like He and Walton.

I'm still interested in Jack Nesbitt in this spot. He just seems like the kind of center you want, that isn't on the smaller side like Yager. The Jets have traditionally stayed pretty big up the middle, and it seems like Nesbitt is a real center unlike Perfetti or Lambert.

Thing is I have seen him anywhere from 15-42 on draft boards.

He'll be gone ten picks before Chevy steps up. Same with Hensler.

I have to admit I never watched him play but his numbers are sure there, being 5'9" scares me as a center but it doesn't mean as much if he has the dogged determination like Carter bear.

Seen him play many times, He went head to head with Cattan in the Royals second round playoff series, matched him point for point. Dog on a bone. He is a playmaker but has a do whatever it takes mentality. He is al leader and been incredible in international play.

Us Royals fans are already losing our minds over next years team when Reschny and Keaton Verhoff will be a year older. Should be the best team we have ever had.

I like Ravensbergen but he did not have a good playoff with Prince George.

One goalie flying under the radar is Giants starter Burke Hood, a 17 year old from Brandon with incredible composure in the net who cemented itself as the starter on a rising Giants team.

I am very stoked to see him next year and that Giants team.

He had a rough first couple of games but given PGs play he largely kept them in it. If they could score on the PP they would have went a lot further. It's the typical situation of run support just wasn't there.
