2025 NHL DRAFT

I'm kind of relieved we didn't win the lottery, sucks to get bumped down one but if tier 2 ends at pick 5 we don't have to make a hard decision like Schaefer V Misa and who knows, maybe someone drops.

Just curious what would it take for grier to trade down 3 spots from 2 to 5? If the isles take Schaefer the Sharks are already set at center and if nashville offers them a good package could it happen? And what would that package look like? And what would nashville be willing to offer?

It would really depend on what they'd want. All of our 1sts for Misa could be fair, but idk if I'd do someone who's already looking good like Molendyk. Tricky.

I wouldn't get cute and burn assets trying to move up. Take highest upside/BPA available at 5 and take two more kicks at the can (or leverage one of those into additional assets) with the other picks. We have a lot of holes to fill going forward and will probably be back in this spot next year. Keep it simple. With our development success rate we probably need to take a quantity approach anyway.

Nah we can't afford to move Molendyk unless we know for sure that player coming back is on the 1C level. As bad of shape as forwards look going forward I'm not sure we aren't in worse shape on the defensive side of things.

Exactly this. I could see some movement happening with the top end of the draft this year, which doesn't usually happen, just because of how level the prospect field seems to be after the first pick, and how the two lottery winner teams arriving on the scene sort of shakes up some preconceptions. But I wouldn't get into that game of trading up. The kind of price we'd have to pay to move up would just be silly. The player we get at #5 is going to be just as good as whoever goes #3 and 4 at least, and any extra premium to chase Misa at #2 would also take a lot more faith in him panning out than I think we should have.

Now, the flip side is if we're dead set on picking "outside the box" ourselves, please do trade DOWN to do it. Don't make some clever off-the-board pick at #5 if you can get that same player at #8 or #10. I am frankly more worried about us getting "clever" and being the team that takes McQueen or Mrtka or somebody else too soon at #5 while Hagens is sitting right there. Let other teams over-think this. If Hagens drops to us at #5, just take him. No need to over-think it. :help:

It's almost like saros hasn't been great for 2 seasons and all of our goalie prospects have been pretty mediocre at best.
I doubt it has all that much to do with Saros. Even before Askarov was traded our organizational goalie depth wasn't all that deep. You don't really draft goalies with any expectation they're ready before 4-5 years anyway.

Exactly. I'm pretty convinced that even if we ended up at 3 we'd have picked Hagens. The lottery shaking out the way it did doesn't really even change the situation for us which is pretty crazy.

BUT, in the scenario that Hagens does go before our pick, we'll still end up with one of Frondell, Martone or Desnoyers. Which are not bad picks, either.

Then trade the VGK 1st to Tampa for Isaac Howard, pick up Fiddler with our TBL 1st and we're cooking.

Asterisk: Only trade a 1st for Isaac Howard if you know 100% for certain he's signing here. But then, I guess since he has already committed to going back to college next year... if you know 100% he signing here... hmmm... why not just sign him as a free agent next summer instead, and keep your pick?
:badidea:

Well, in reality of course we know he'll also want to sign right after his college season ends and burn the first ELC year if he could. But he has already indicated he's fully ready to instead wait to become a free agent. So that might not be a huge issue for him. I wouldn't want to trade a 1st, even in a bad draft, just to watch the player sail away, or trade it if I thought I could get him "for free" instead. :dunno:

What does Michigan State look like for next season? I don't think I've heard yet of any of the big CHL stars heading there? I wonder how Howard will fare in what is likely to be a tougher league next year? Winning a Hobey Baker is not an automatic guarantee of NHL success, and his first 2 years weren't all that great... I know it's all the rage right now for us fans to climb aboard the perceived trade opportunity. But if he was really all that, I don't think Tampa would have been quite so ready to let him walk? Anyway, you have to have the first-hand knowledge, I am just saying from the peanut gallery a little bit of caution might be warranted here before we start throwing away 1st round picks. :dunno:

Shark fans aren't convinced they are set at Center in the top 6. They don't think Smith is a lock to be a C and seem happy to have Misa with one of them turning into a wing long term.

Tier 1 is 4 players:
Misa
Schaefer
Martone
Hagens

That’s what I’m seeing everywhere anyways. Frondell and Desnoyers are next two then McQueen.

On a side note…
Does anyone else think it’s a bit weird they don’t publish each teams “number combos” for the lottery so we know what team truly had what numbers in this lottery?

Wouldn't do it. This draft is questionable already. We might blow a bunch of assets and still get a worse player at 2 than they get at 5

Makes sense. I think our 3rd and 5th make sense to try and pick a goalie or two. The later 2nd might be ok instead of the 3rd depending on who is left on the board but I'd rather spend on center, defense, and LW first

I guess no one else finds it hilarious that we are going to grab 1-2 goalies when we just had an elite goalie prospect in Askarov. This franchise is cursed.
