For Washington/Poile, they had a ton of early picks, but Peake was kind of eliminated due to injury as opposed to sheer drafting incompetency? He is sort of a Michael Misa type from that draft. You could pick one of the top-5 forwards in this year's draft and easily end up with another Pat Peake, and it wouldn't all be on the GM for the pick. That's just the way the draft works, alas.

Did you see all the other guys Poile passed on around his first 3 picks, that's gross negligence.

Well, I saw them all, probably live (aside from Euros at the WJC), with an acute eye to prospects and the draft in those days. So he picked Peake #14, Halverson #21, Lavigne #25 (round 2 in those days). TBH, I don't believe any of those were seen as huge reaches at the time?

Lavigne was purely a tough guy, that was more of a Bad Pick, but not a franchise-altering error... if they had picked Palffy, Staois, Ozolinsh or whoever instead, it's not like it would have changed the fortunes of the team in any meaningful way? Other teams picked players just as bad even earlier. That's just the way the draft goes?

It definitely didn't set them up as well as it could have, but I feel like that's simply the way things often go in the draft... and it won't be all on Trotz either if we get a similar net output from our picks this year, btw. The draft is a crapshoot. That's the bottom line. Over several years, you want to see an overall plus. But you can't cherrypick individual selections or years, because this kind of thing ALWAYS happens. :dunno:

Such is life if you are going to RELY on rebuilding via the draft. You need some luck on your side, and you need to do other things right too, because the draft is just no guarantee of anything.

A scout actually put Schaefer #2 behind Misa, purely on positional considerations, but that is still something that hadn't come up last time out? It wasn't seen as even that close? :dunno:

Looks to me like the top-11 are set, and I won't be surprise if Jackson or Mrtka go higher than this, because D are valued (and they both continue to show very well). After that, it's the crapshoot territory, so hopefully we hit with some of our later picks.

Also, go down and look at the Caps first 3 picks, 2 in round 1 and 1 in round 2 and tell me Poile didn't want a redo either.

Disappointing disappearing act from Frondell in the U18's. Not a great performance by the team in the Gold Medal game, but Frondell didn't certainly help their case as they got whacked by Canada 7-0.

Frondell ended up with only 3 (1g, 2a) points in 5 games. For comparison, Hagens put up 22 points in 7 games last year in the same tournament.

Although, I do think Frondell's game can actually be better when playing against men. He has a man's physique already and maybe lacks a bit of the crazy pace these type of games include.

Agreed. I think he will be good NHLer, but his showing this week raises serious questions about his upside.

Listening to Hockey Prospects radio and he was doing a breakdown of each team and their draft results for a 10 year window. Breaking things down into data like games started, etc. he found that the Preds were right in the middle of the pack. What really hurt was the Chet Pickard and/or Jon Blum to pan out. Aberg and Salomaki didn't quite make the cut-off, which also dropped us in this ranking.

He has that Brady Tkachuk relentlessness, strong shot, he has gotten bigger and stronger as year went on. He is excellent on zone entries. He won’t be 100 point player, but he plays the way you need to win in playoffs. Some people have compared him to Sam Bennett, that ain’t bad comp. Has some Brayden Schenn in him.

I like it. This guy sounds like someone we could use if he develops accordingly. I don't follow the draft prospects like some of you. Thanks for the response.

I do agree with that. It feels a little to me like picking Zachary L'Heureux at #3, however? If I was going to buck the trends and say pass over Frondell (who isn't wowing me) and Hagens (who is kind of the de facto supposedly "safe" pick) then I am still more of a fan of Desnoyers than Martin, I guess.

(Where "fan" is still based on nothing much because, I reiterate... I only stats-watch prospects these days. :GWC: )

He is bigger than zlh, more skilled, and a center.

I could see destroyers. He is good player. But I’m not sure his upside is higher.

Reaching for Martin would be such a nashville predators move. Doomed to stay in the mushy middle with picking a player that most have going in the mid 1st at 3. Using our other picks to try and move up would be the smartest move if we really fall in love with Martin

Let's say we drop down to 5 after the lottery and all of Misa, Hagens and Frondell are gone by our pick. Then, I would entertain the scenario of trading back a couple of spots and picking Martin. Let's say by doing that we could get another top-15 pick by bundling our picks and in addition to Martin picking up a guy like McQueen (I know, HUGE risk), or one of the top defensemen (Smith, Mrtka) I'd say that would be a pretty, pretty sweet haul for us.

But should we stay at three (or drop down one spot), I wouldn't go for Martin. I agree with BBB, there are no "cant-miss" prospects even at the top of this draft but still I think any one of Hagens, Frondell and Misa are better picks than Martin. Not taking anything away from Martin, but his skillset is one you can trade or sign for, whereas elite game-breaking talent such as top-five picks usually tend to have are more rare to come by.
 
Have to add to this, I think Martin had the type of U18 showing our scouts seem to love and prefer. That being said, it wouldn't be completely out of the question to see us drafting Martin.

I disagree. I think things get dicey after the top 5
Schaefer
Misa
Hagens
Martone
Frondell
Are the clear cut top five. I know our need for a center is our biggest need but if we end up 5 and the first top 3 centers are gone I would look hard at picking martone. He's a play driver and a power forward. Comparisons are matthew tkchuck . It would be hard to pass on him and reach for the next center but that's just me. Hopefully we don't end up 5. Hopefully we win the lottery and we pick Misa
