Well, having lived through that draft back in my "prime", I'm very certain nobody would ever re-do the #1 pick. Lindros was a total phenom. Niedermayer and Forsberg obviously panned out better from the #3/6 slots than the other guys picked, but that's pretty normal for NHL drafts for that kind of thing to happen.
For Washington/Poile, they had a ton of early picks, but Peake was kind of eliminated due to injury as opposed to sheer drafting incompetency? He is sort of a Michael Misa type from that draft. You could pick one of the top-5 forwards in this year's draft and easily end up with another Pat Peake, and it wouldn't all be on the GM for the pick. That's just the way the draft works, alas.
