2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Anyone interested in trading down?

Couple names I really like that are projected to go in the back half of the 1st round are Schmidt, Ravensbergen, and Reschny..

☝️

I admit, a goaltender would not be something I'd hope this team would look at in Round 1, even if it had multiple picks.

But Reschny is a player who has piqued my interest since the Hlinka Gretzky last summer and he's been having a fantastic spring. He's looking like a reason to be ready to drop back, if need be.

I'm also a believer in Ihs-Wozniak over the long run. If he keeps trucking in this U18 tourney the way he has been though, he likely won't be there in Round 2 when we select.

I know you know this, but there are no sure things. Of course, there are pretty certain bets that a guy will play in the NHL and become, say, at least a 3rd liner. But then you're talking about someone you can get with a later pick and that takes away the "you haven't had 1st round picks" argument. If you haven't had 1st round picks, isn't getting a legit top 10 talent the goal?

Ok, I'll state it differently to avoid a misunderstanding of my having written "sure thing".

The things I like about a Martin, Lakovic, or Reschny are so convincing and promising, that I'd rather select one of them at 10 (unless you can move back?) than McQueen, even if a healthy McQueen would be thought to have the highest upside of that group.

I still think you're getting a very projectable NHL player with perhaps untapped offensive potential.

I take that over the McQueen concerns in light of the risk I see as greater when you haven't been doing much selecting.

Something I don't think we've talked about but always seems to be a possibility is that once pick 10 arrives, and a player like McQueen (or another slipper) is there for the taking, that another team may come knocking with an interesting trade request.

My main point was that the draft is all about risk-benefit analysis, and only the top few picks generally have high benefits and low risk, especially in a supposedly shallower draft like this one. So, if you're at #10, do you take the guy with questions about his decision-making, or his motor, or the guy who was talked about as a top 3 pick and then had an injury? Again, if he's had back issues that's a different story, but if they do due diligence and come to the conclusion that this is an injury that can be put in the rearview mirror, then maybe it's a worthwhile risk.

The staff's will do their due diligence.

I'm sure Philly did before selecting Patrick.

Assuming the draft plays out for the top 9, I like Lakovic at 10 then Martin.

The story on Nolan Patrick as told by Clarke was all the Philly scouts wanted Hextall to take Makar at #2 but Hextall wasn’t having it and selects Patrick because he was the consensus #1 for most of the season.

I agree with your premise with Patrick. PHI took him at #2. The whole reason players are at the very top of the draft is that they have high upside and less risk (whether that's risk relating to their size, skating, motor, injury, etc.). If Patrick had an injury question and the next picks were Heiskanen, Makar and Pettersson, that was a mistake. At some point, Patrick would have become worth the risk, but not at #2.

I would not take Lakovic at #10, I'd trade back.

If you can end up with two of Lakovic/Schmidt/Ravensbergen/Reschny/Boumedienne/IhsWozniak then I think that is quite a nice 1st round for an organization that needs prospects everywhere. Hell you might even see a guy like Aitcheson, Bear, or Potter fall further than anticipated.

In the second round I'd love to get Ryker Lee.

Sorokin is only under contract for 4 more years, yes Gamzin and Gidlof have had promising D+1 seasons but I'm of the belief that you can never have too many goaltenders in your system.

I've seen the same dog and pony show too many times where this organization had Koskinen, Nilsson, and Poulin at one point and none of them developed into a starting goaltender. Then there was Soderstrom and Sorokin and then Skarek, Tikkanen, and Lennox and only one of them is an NHL goaltender today.

My first thought when I saw the name Ravensberg is that Gidlöf is the real deal. Gamzin certainly looks promising up to now as well.

Just didn't seem like an organizational need.

I hear you.

In general, I belong to that "It's best not to use a first rounder on a goalie" club. Long story.

Interestingly, the last goaltenders to be taken in the first round were Sebastian Cossa and Jesper Wallstedt back in 2021.

Had the following draft over at FC Hockey:

However, with the AI making all the other picks, there was already some "off the board" style selections in the first round and by the 4th or 5th rounds, the machine just started making alphabetical selections.

So, that definitely needs to be fixed.

This model sucks because it has Ryabkin always going top ten and in some cases top 5.

You know how we do an "Isles prospect ranking" every year? We should do the same thing for the 1st round of the draft each year (or at least the top 15 or so). Would be fun to crowdsource our thoughts on the prospects and see who everyone wants.

Does LL have a grandson playing?

I don't hate our draft class on lines.com right now, some great value in later rounds with Radivojevic and Pobezal that late.

Kashawn Aitcheson (would swap with Jake O'Brien or Mrtka personally)
Jakob Ihs Wozniak
Max Psenicka
Anthony Allain-Samaké
Tomas Pobezal
Luka Radivojevic
Roope Vesterinen
