2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

I guess i have to cheer for Philly and Pittsburgh so I can stick it to you. lol
Well, we can even go back to that winning streak, if we split those games, we own a top 5 pick. 4-11 separated by 7 points. It was a 7 game winning streak which got us 14 points. If we went 3-3-1, would be picking 4th.

I’m convinced the Isles are gonna win the lottery this year

Bettman won’t like an empty newer building, Hagens is a local boy, and he owes the Isles if they are going to pull the ASG like has been bandied about

If we win I would think the Islanders take Schaeffer, he seems to be the clear cut #1. Maybe Bettman can make us get spot #2. lol

Plus we need the defenseman. But it would be hard to pass up on Hagens as a local kid. You’d have to think him being a fan makes it pretty damn close to a lock that he stays a one jersey guy for life

I mean, if you win the draft you can probably trade back to 3 if you want, pick up a decent asset and still get Hagens assuming he doesn’t go 2

I can’t say I know how much of a difference there is between Schaefer and Hagens though, so idk how much it’s worth to do any of the things

If CBJ wanted to move 13 and 21 for 10 I’d do it. Really wouldn’t be able to stress how much our prospect pool would improve over two years with 6 picks in the top two rounds just by trading down.

A trade with CGY picks is more realistic, our pick and a third value wise matches up with the two firsts according to puck pedias draft pick value
That seems a massive overpayment to move up three spots. Depending on BJs needs the Isles would have to add, but I'd gladly throw in a player to make that deal.

Maybe just wishful thinking but what about something like 10OA, Mayfield, 3rd for 13 and 21? Or a similar deal with CGY?

Yeah cbj wouldn’t make sense

I doubt the teams at 1,2 pass up the chance to draft Schaefer or Misa . Lou's made some deals with Davidson (CHI) so if they fall out of the top 2 post lotto there could be something to kick tires on ,

I am no expert but just going off draft rankings by scouting services Schaffer tops it like 11 of 15 lists with Misa and Hagen both being rated #1 on 2 lists each. Now after that Misa seems to be higher on most lists than Hagens(like 9 vs 4)

I completely understand those two ahead of Hagens as their skill sets are more rare and if they reach their potentials more impactful. (But imo if the thing that has made Misa rise is his ability to score the way he has at the C position I can easily imagine ranking him #1 overall, and Schaefer #2).

The reason I don't see Hagens dropping below #3 is that there's no team that doesn't want a player like him. Not only does he have the upside, he has versatility, intelligence, and intangibles too. All this stuff about Desnoyers being ranked over Hagens otoh seems bizarre to me.

If we win the lottery and take Hagens I will be absolutely pissed. There are two much better prospects than Hagens. IDC if he’s the owners son you take the better talent.

I don't really see that there are two much better prospects than Hagens. Schaefer seems to be #1 in most lists now, but that doesn't mean there's separation to the point that Hagens would be a bad pick at #1. From the little I've read to this point, I do see that Hagens is characterized as a guy who makes the players around him better. Do they say that about Misa? Not sure, but Misa plays with Parekh who maybe helped make Misa better. Misa also had 3 points in 4 playoff games and was a minus 10. Hagens was a point per game player in the NCAA in his draft year - that's pretty good - as is going 5-4-9 in 7 games in the WJCs in his draft year.

Anyway, hopefully we have the problem of winning the lottery and figuring out who to take!

With how much of a commodity RHD with size continue to be in this league, I wonder if Mrtka pushes into the top 5-6.

If by some chance the Isles win the lottery, and are hell bent on taking Hagens, I would hope they'd at least trade down to 3 or 4 and get another asset. The emerging consensus seems to be there is a top tier of 2 (schaefer and misa), followed by a second tier of 3-4 (hagens, martone, desnoyers, frondell). Of course, you'd have to do your homework with the top 2 or 3 to make sure Hagens will be there when you pick, but I think it would be a bit of mismanagement to have the #1 or 2 and not come away with the top two unless some team made it worth your while.

With all these very good players at the top we would most likely grab a goalie with the top pick ..LGI

I’m a little surprised Martone is listed as a wing and is generally rated below Misa. He looks like Eichel to me out there in my extremely limited viewings.

He’s probably my current favorite between him Misa and Hagens.

The Islanders didn’t win four back to back Stanley Cups by drafting local kids. If Schaefer is truly the better prospect then you need to take him.

He is weeks away from being in the 2026 draft and has the potential to be the best defenseman the organization has had since Potvin.

Isles are picking at #10 with no lottery shenanigans. Assuming a second defenseman is picked before them (Mrtka, Aitchenson, or Smith), that means one of Eklund, McQueen, or O’Brien will still be there.

Those are GOOD prospects - especially McQueen, who was thought of as a top 5 pick before his injury and a couple players shooting up the board. We have a legitimate shot at two centers with top line upside, and the consolation prize would be a high compete winger who has an older brother already contributing in the league. We’re not walking out of this draft empty handed.

I've barely started researching this draft, but my quick take based on history is that McQueen will not be there at #10. He's a 6'5" almost 200lb RH shot C who was a point per game player last year and only dropped in the published rankings because of his injury this year. Some team will take him before 10, maybe even top 5.

SJ/Grier say they'd listen to offers on top pick, even if it's #1 overall:

rather we just stay at 10 then completely overpay because the team at 1 knows this isnt exactly viewed as a great draft
