2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

I expect to trade it in another Alex Romanov type of deal. Might not be the worst move we can make.
imo there's a lot up in the air about this draft so it's like 2022 in that respect. I would not be surprised if there are a bunch of deals. arguably this draft is weaker than 2022's.

I think Jake O'Brien is fine, but if I were to compare at the same age level, I think he's below Nazar, whom NYI gave up the opportunity to draft. So, yeah, I can see a situation where the the higher upside guys are taken (the Swedes), and NYI are left with choices that don't seem great. Otoh if Mrtka might be available, I think I'd prefer making that pick. I think he's got a high enough floor to make the potentially very rich reward worth the risk. But that's also why I think he'll be gone by #13.

So if it's #13 and NYI are left with a choice between O'Brien, Bear, Martin, etc... Well, I get the meh. But maybe there's someone who likes one of them enough to trade up?

Right now, the Isles are 11th in point percentage, which is the only real way to rank things right now since there are differences in GP.

Assuming the Isles lose both remaining games in regulation, here's what needs to happen for the team to stay in the 12th spot or better:
- Red Wings: get 1 point in three games (they win tiebreaker due to ROW)
- NYR: get 1 point in two games (they win tiebreaker due to RW)

Both these things happen, Isles pick 10th. One of these things happens, Isles pick 11th. Neither happens, Isles pick 12th.

Obviously for every Islanders point earned over the next two games, you'll have to increase the Red Wings/NYR by that amount.

While theoretically possible, it's incredibly unlikely for the Isles to fall to 13th (before the lottery at least), so didn't include Columbus.

That 13th overall pick (being traded for some mediocre player) is gonna make this board meltdown and i know its gonna happen.
The New York Islanders acquire Connor Garland from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for the 13th overall pick and Kyle Maclean.

Someone put $5 on this please.

Might need to make such a trade before the drafting starts or at least not wait until right when we're up to bat.

I'd also find it entertaining to see the pick moved to a team like San Jose for i.e. Kasper Halttunen and their late round 1st in order to select a forward like Gästrin, Ryabkin, or Reschny.

In other words, would be cool to see a skill forward picked up AND get to have a 1st round pick at some juncture.

As scary and yet somewhat believable as that would seem at first site, the fact that Garland is 29 and only has one more year on his contract makes such a move very, very unlikely for Lamoriello.

Even his track record to date is that he'd be using that first to bring in a young 20s something who is already a cost-controllable NHLer with upside.

I'm not worried about that kind of botchery.

Start Sorokin tomorrow and roll out the same guys against a team that’s been complacent since Ovi broke the record 😗 they will almost certainly win at least one of these games I feel, would be typical

If they're drafting #11-13 in a relatively weaker draft, I think you need to look long and hard at Euro, USHL, etc.. It seems like in the past those have been the better sources in weaker drafts.

Perfect results tonight.

Detroit and NYR pass us with regulation wins, Montreal loses so Columbus still has to try to win tomorrow to make the playoffs
As I posted in a different thread, decent chance now that TOR and TBL have nothing to play for on Thurs vs DET and NYR, which is also good. With tonight's NYR win, TBL locked up home ice vs FLA, and TOR's magic # for clinching the division is 1.

Seems like most mocks have us taking Mrtka, not that I watch any junior hockey but I'm uneasy about his size and the ability to skate at the NHL level

I'd prefer one of Bear or Martin if the pick is at 10-12ish, think O'Brien will be off the board by the time we pick

My dime store is the isles are looking at O'Brien. Between nelson Ritchie and O'Brien one may hit no? Here I go again, searching for the magic beans . It would nice the isles jump up 8 or 9 spots like the rags did with kakko and laf.
You’ve got a better shot with Gatcomb being able to not be another Kyle Maclean and fall into the monotony than the Isles do of jumping that many spots in the draft.

NHL would rather the islanders stay mediocre than ever be good. They would never give us that lotto luck like the rags did

How I see it, the Islanders are gonna pick Mtrka or Bear. They won't get that same elite guy in the top 10 or so, and they'll say "well we needed a defenseman" or something. We really need more young forwards, especially those who are under control.

I agree that we need dmen, Isaiah George might be the only dman we have younger than Romanov who can play in the show.

But use your second and third rounders on them.

First round let’s add another forward. Idc if the guy projects to be a second or third liner. Add to Eiserman, Ritchie and Nelson.

I also think dmen are easier to get in free agency and trade than a forward.

Granted if they get that Mrtaka kid, I won’t be upset because who wouldn’t want to add a 6’6 right handed guy when you have no d prospects to speak of but if I were running an organization, if all things are equal, take the forward in the first round.

I had a theory in 2008/09 before leagues switched around in power if you took an OHL center in the first round, 2nd round WHL dman, third round CHL dman and 4th round euro/russian goalie you might be successful.

It is more likely the target would be Shane Pinto, RFA the following off-season.
I believe there is still some tough feelings around the contract negotiation and subsequent gambling.

He will be 25 and his cap hit is 3.75, but 5m American dollars this coming season.

With the acquisition of Cozens, Pinto becomes 3rd on that depth chart and although having 3 strong centres is a good thing. I believe if they could get a 1st round pick somewhere between 10-13, I think Ottawa does it.

Pinto for 2025 1st (10 OA -13 OA pick) is exactly in line with what Lou would do.
