2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Who should we pick 3rd overall (assuming Schaefer and Misa are gone)?

Weirdly, the Hawks should probably draft some defensemen as silly as it sounds. 2023 they essentially drafted 0 D and 2024 it’s basically just Levshunov.
With Rinzel levshunov and EDM Kaiser Allan all essentially being graduated or taxi squad guys there really isn’t much in Rockford and there is nothing in college or junior coming behind
It is silly. Defense has already been the majority of the premier picks we need to focus on forwards and hope one of our non top 3 picks at forward turns into a legit top 6 player. Pick a dman in the 3rd round don’t care but we neglected the forward group for way too long as is. Also already a good chance we see lev Allan KK EDM and possibly Rinzel (never say never) play for the hogs at various points next season.

I wouldn't hate a defenseman at 25 or 34 if there is anything intriguing on the left side, potential KK replacement if they decide to move him for an equivalent NHL forward
For LHD, it's Haoxi Wang for me.

He's way way off from playing in the NHL, but he has the upside to be an elite shutdown defender.

And I like his odds cause he'll be spending 3-4 years developing at BU.

Blake Fiddler would be a great addition.

O'Brien, Bear and McQueen are far and away the most intriguing guys in the draft, for me. Bear skirts McQueen territory because they are both only injuries away from probable top 5 consideration. Bear should occupy the top 10 spot currently being occupied by Martin, but achilles injuries are so scary.

If O'Brien works on his skating and finds his shot, he could be the one guy teams in the top 5 regret passing on.

I think Bear could end up one of the 5 best and most productive players in this draft.

Hard to see a guy with his combo of skill and tenacity fall, but medicals can change everything. This combine is set to be the most interesting one in a while between the talented goofballs in interviews, height discrepencies all over and crucial Drs exams a few guys face.

The Hawks are taking a forward at 3rd unless something stupid happens and Schaefer is there.

So you have 1st overall on Bedard, 2nd overall on Levshunov, 3rd overall on Martone/Misa/Hagens/Frondell and 7th overall on Korchinski. The majority of the other 1st second round picks have been on forwards. Boisvert, Moore, Vanacker, Misiak, Greene, Lundwinski, Kantsterov, etc. It's just Rinzel that CHI's drafted on D.

Misa -> worse Celebrini/Seguin
Martone -> Todd Bertuzzi/Blake Wheeler
Hagens -> worse Jack Hughes/ better Logan Cooley
Desnoyers -> Shane Wright/Sean Monahan/less offensive Hischier
Frondell -> Horvat/Elias Lindholm
O’Brien -> Elias Pettersson

They gave O'Brien the only 100point comp

If the Hawks could get Jake O’Brien at 6 or 7 from PHI or BOS with either 48th(PHI)or 51st(BOS) in do it…

To PHI 2025 3rd overall
To CHI 2025 6th overall and 2025 48th overall

Or

To BOS 2025 3rd overall
To CHI 2025 7th overall and 2025 51st overall

We need quality, not quantity.

If the Hawks felt O'Brien was the best player available, they'd be stupid to trade down that far just hoping he'd still be available. All just for a late 2nd.

I see posted from the Fourth Period Sharks looking to move up to 1 . Just don't answer the phone Kyle and let Darche pick Hagen's , then pick whoever you like.

I have my bonafide fav of the top pick this year but...

Keeping our picks and/or maybe just moving up on the late first should be the plan. The bigger part of the plan is the team should draft top 5 next year too. That's why I see this year's top pick as a sum of parts.

A great draft next year is the difference between building a solid potential core versus having an army of talent going into the '26-'30 era. End the rebuild with a treasure chest.

Going from total effing zero to a contender is just an insane and low percentage of success hill to climb. Get all the chips you can bet on then fiddle around with acquiring core pieces outside the draft. Meanwhile, sign guys short term who can help with development. The Hawks could use a chill higher end ex cup(s) winner or two even if to mostly ride the bench and talk to the kids.

That’s not nearly enough value to move up from 6/7 to 3.

I want the draft order to stay the same, frankly because I think San Jose will have some issues going forward taking a forward. Not real issues but like Toronto style lopsided allocation issues. But if they got Schaefer it’s game on with us and them duking it out for a decade.
Apparently they want Marner bad. But if you give Marner 15 million, you gotta give Celebrini 15 million and then Smith 13 million and so on.

I’m guessing Davidson and new capologist already discussed this hence being out on Marner. And then San Jose is far away on D still, which take way longer to develop anyways. So yeah they may be having lopsided issues n a hurry.

Different discussion for a different thread. But I definitely want Bedard to set the contract limit for the Hawks hopefully in July. Hopefully under 12. No one has the right to ask for more than that and that’s just the way you operate until the house of cards falls. This is how the Bruins were so good for so long.

Let this be true and happen please. Marner would also take them out of the running for 32nd for McKenna and DuPont in future years

If they get Schaefer and win the McKenna sweepstakes next year, on paper, that’s the best looking young team in the league within 2-3 years.

Celebrini Smith
McKenna Eklund

Schaefer/Dickinson

That’s a helluva core.

Does the same game work for the Hawks?

Bedard Martone
McKenna Nazar

Vlasic/Levshunov
Korchinski/Rinzel

Helluva core?
