2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Who should we pick 3rd overall (assuming Schaefer and Misa are gone)?

That is essentially every draft. There are always guys that fall because someone likes someone else better. In this mock it was Reschny who fell, jusl like Moore fell in 2023. Sometimes you get lucky

Sure but I would not put too much weight on Tankahton´s mock draft. I could see someone like Vancouver picking him at 15th. Cam Robinson said in latest CHGO podcast also that he could go in top 15 but there is chance that he falls in 25th spot too.

This draft is gross. I do not claim to have watched a ton of these guys, but this is a list of 40 on my big board. This is a pretty weak draft. Weak depth, weak middle of the 1st, and an average 1st oa. The sweet spot in this draft is the 3-7 range because there isn't a big tier drop. I have Mcqueen on the Do Not Draft list due to injuries and poor play when I've seen him.

Desnoyer and his Wildcats on the Tube tonight vs Dale Hunter's London Knights 600pm TSN in Canada. A Poster on here commented that Caleb (a 63% faceoff guy) has suddenly stopped taking faceoff's. So yea playing injured .

Craig Button has Brady Martin nowxa t#6Head of Drsnoyersxat#7 and Hagens at#8.!!!

Told you that Martin impressed so much atu18s that rankersxand NHL teamswould have to make him tge late riser..

However Butyo gas Frondell at #3...

But he stunk at u18s...Looked slow.. Easily handled by dmen...especialky the Canada dmen..I just cannot see it.
Button still has McQueenat #5 ...despit the injury history and risk.A bet that health will be ok going forward and if so maybe a team should gamble on that it all works out for a long career in the Show as a top Cebter on one of the top 2 lines.

Martone at #4..

Now remember KD said Hawks list woukd be diffefent than most public lists...

Would suggest that consensus 3,4, guys Margone and Frlndr not their target at #3..

That suggests Hawks could be thinking that Ftondell does nkt end up a Centdr and that they want another Center I case Bedard ultimately ends up at wing.

The issues with both Martone and Frondell even if ultimately NHL wingers Re ones of consistency...
Frobdell as I said stink at u18s..Martone had a big dip i production from mid JANUARY through till late February but then picked up hos game again..Also questions of whether Martone has consistent physical jam to be a piwrr forward or is more a fiber winger playmaker with occasional jam..
Perplexing.

So you go to alternatives...Hagens too small..Hawks have enoghy gh smallish forwatds let by Bedard and Nazar...But especialky if sone mark down Hagens hard for disappointing freshman production despite his odivilexged situationat B C. Woth Leonard MD Perrault

So you have the 6'0 178 lb Martin who plays more like 6'4240...Best and hardest hitter in the draft...hardest worker ,pace ,energy but also scorong and driving scoring chances off that relentless hard work..you have got to consider adding a unique player with Zero consistency issues.
You have to ask the reverse question:

If Martin played for better teams would he have put up 20-30 more piubts and Then no question this guy would be as legit #3overall as any..

Or put it the other way...if any of Martone Frondell Desnoyers played i the Soo for such a poor team with little help around the as Martin did, would they even have produced the point ts Martin did on that situation?
Now Hawks may prefer Desnoyers given what extra strength could do for hom as he adds weight on his land frame.. And he is so solid 2 ways in thec20oft hame..you can usually rely on him defensively.
Watching him there are some Toews like aspects to his game...

However what is perplexing is that Moncton uses him a lot as a winger...only sonetines at Center.
So can he be the 2 way Center he is listed as lisitionally?

Martin played 1C for that bad Soo team alk season..but hecstrrex at u18s playing at LW..

Still his style ..the relentless forecheck and back-check suggests it will be effective either at Center or wing.
So when KD said Hawks list would be a lit different than most lists was he hinting they like Brady Martin a lot?

Or wss it that they are going to gamble on McQueen even with limited pkay this season and the injury risk history?

Or will he rally bet on the upside for Jake O'Brien?
O'Brien was at #11on Button's latest list ...this is lower than most lists that hame hom 7th or 8th...

So Hawks have a lot of choices..nothing is clear cut .and itvis nonsense to talk BPA from such an extensive list I the see 2nd tierwutg clear separation from tge top 2 ci senses choices inScheafer or Misa.
I do not think SjJ bypasses Misa at #2 if NYI takes Schaefer at #1..

I know tgatvif NYI takes Misa at #,Sharks jump on Schaefer at #2..

So tge drFt starts at #3 ..who do the Hawkscpickfrom so many choices with so much uncertainty as to whether they hit projected ceilings worthy forxa #3.

If it was ne,take the most certain floor guy or bet on the highrstvupside..
You know what a Brady Martin can add to a lineup...

And if alk thevotgets for#3considertion fail to hitvtgeircceilibgs, their floor will be worse than Martin's because nobody is as physical or works as hard orcas consistently..It isctgese extras you get with him easy to convince you madexa very good addition to your future Cup team.

Hecwill help any line he playsvon..Also a captain and leader.
Sure not a 90 piibtscguy ..but a 30g 40a guy with allhose extra qualities is a good pick to make.

Or the betvon the longer runway for O'broen ...Easiky the same or better passr playmaker than Martone...andvhevis ax6'2 Center who just needs to add to his lanky frame . Yes he has to improve his skatingvto get more explosion and separation soeed but and he has to improve defrbsivecreads ...butvhevhascgoidxworkvethic..he did improve sjatibgvfronwhefevhecwas at start of the year..he didcget betterxascseasonworevon...but remember, though gevojayed big monutes, his 5x5 shifts were ONLY asca 2C with Brampton.. He dus nktveven have Vanaxker on his libe back from injury toll later in December and it took Vanackerawhile to get back upto hos normal level of play.

So you havectobthink the layer born(June birthdate) O'broen will have a monster year this season I Brantford.

So O'brien coukd havecthe biggest upside ceilingvofcany of these candidates..Do you betvon that? That hevhits syarccekingcwhikevotgets may never do ..

The only question o O'brien I have is as a more gobto 1C 5x5 this sesson will he show a higher shot volume..

This season hecwas driving offense as a playmakermostky... low shot volume...was this by habit or design given a rolecto set up Brantfordcgpal scorers especiall o their lethal Pp?
Can he as the 1C this season on bea go to goal scorer?

His shoiting% was tge highest of any of the prospects I mentioned above forctge #3 candidate (just under 24%)..but his shots total and shots on goal per game were lowest among alk the others mentioned above ...

So what is Jake O'Brien= past first playmaker and PP specialist?
A Joe Thornton type Center=playmaker skewed poibts getters tgexexpensevifcgoalbscoring....OR can he get more goal to assist balance as the 1C this srsson and score morec5x5.

I think hisxsiation as on the 2C but a key element on a lethalbPp ,has probably putvhom down on most listsx..butvifvhe can balancevoutvhuscscoribgvtoba closer goalsctobassistctatio then looking back at lotvofcranjers in future could admit tgey made a ranking mistake not seeing that he had maybectgechighrstcceilingbofcany in thisxdrsft..Hexwas just not in the 1Croke norx as his develipnent as advanced as some of the other older draft prosoects.

If KD believes O'brien has a lotvif runway to reach the highest ofvhisvoitebtial, maybe he goes him at #3

The fact is...we do not know who KD will pick ..could be any of the ones mentioned above
But that he saidctgecHawks listcwoukd be a lot different than most public lists suggests that the fans favorites (Martone,Frondell,Hagens may not be the choice KD makes.
We will see what happens but I woukd love it for KD ti shock all the rankersxand mock drafts from the experts and go to the less talked of candidates rather than the usual
favored suspects.

Wouldn't surprise me if Reschny was available in the 2nd round

Short perimeter players aren't exactly a hot commodity
So please help me understand, Cole Reschny who is listed at 5’10 - 5’11 is “short” and could/should be available in the 2nd round but Culllen Potter’s height which is listed at 5’10 isn’t a detriment for him to be selected in the 5 - 10 range for you?

I wonder if this FLA team will have an influence on KD's decision, if he walks away saying we need a Martone type player more than anything else, if you think he has that edge to his game and the skill to go with it

Being big =/= playing big.

Strome was over 6”0

DeBrincat was 5”8

The 5”8 player had a lot more physicality to his game and didn’t shy from contact

if he can play with that edge and have the skill to go with it, maybe Brady Martin is considered that type of player too, but Martone seems to be the guy most comp'd to a Perry/Tkachuk type player in the top 5

After reading the rumor that they're out on Marner already can't help but wonder if they're watching the playoffs unfold and have decided that they actually need to start adding a different element to their forward group, which could sway their pick at 3 as well
I mentioned before, but I think 3 is going to be a hard working dog on the puck. But that’s easy to say because there isn’t any true high end talent available to skip on.

I still think Desnoyers is that guy. His hard work will go well with Nazar and Moore who are also dogs on the puck and Bedard who is obviously insanely talented.

It’s also why they aren’t looking at Hagens. Sure there’s talent, but he makes a lot of business decisions. The Hawks are clearly trying to be the hardest working team in the league.

Then you see guys like Spellacy, Slaggert, Vanacker, Savoie. All guys you know are going to work their asses off.

Jason Bukala described Reschny like this:

“Reschny is an active player who generally works hard in all three zones. He can be deployed in a variety of roles, but leans offence more than checking forward overall. Reschny is usually involved in traffic.”

Doesn´t sound like a perimeter player to me?

Reschny had second best ppg in WHL´s playoffs after McKenna. Strong playoffs and U18´s raised his stock for sure. No way he slides to the second round.

Potter has elite upside. Reschny doesn't.

I'm not sure why you're hung up on height.

It's like complaining that I don't have Connor Garland ranked higher than DeBrincat.

Havent taken Musto seriously for a long time. But he himself seems take his takes pretty seriously. Whats the point of having message board if we cant discus hockey and if necessery call out outlandish takes which Musto has got caught making up several times.
I’m not a huge fan but was impressed when I saw an old post of his from a few years back rating (I believe) the top 32.
While I didn’t agree with some and hindsight shows others to be awful. I respect the level of testicular fortitude it takes to put such a list out there.

I think (just my opine) all of our resident geniuses should do likewise for this draft.
A) rate the talent 1 thru 34 (hawks 1st 2nd rd pick)
B) if you feel need trumps BPA name the guy lower than 3-25 or 34 that you would prefer.

Nothing at stake other than pride but it would be interesting to see how close some of you can get to where the “real” scouts pick em.

I might also suggest that mods not let people who don’t make a list be critical of the lists made by others. … put yours out there or shut up.

Reschny is not a perimeter player. In fact, that is a huge issue with Potter.

The main issue with Reschny is his skating is very average for a guy his size.
