Who should we pick 3rd overall (assuming Schaefer and Misa are gone)?

If the Hawks view getting that top pick as a step up from what would be there at #3 - then go get it. Just don't trade next year's Blackhawks #1 pick - that pick is untouchable. If it takes the Toronto first this year or next year's Florida first - fine.

That all said, I just don't see them doing that for Schaefer. I know BPA is king and I agree with it - but that doesn't mean you trade up for BPA in a position you're already stacked in. I would think they would only consider it if they really wanted Misa.

Just looking at production it is interesting that Martinecand Misa were neck and neck at thec30 game mark for each :

Misa first 30GP = 30g 31 a = 61 pts

Martone first 30 GP = 22g 38a = 60 pts

Martone playthat ed his 30th game only on January 11th ,2025 ...

Misa got to game 30 December 18th,2024

Obviously Martone missed time and pkayed pnlyex 57 games over the 24/25 regular season which was 8 games less than Misa..

If we use a 65 game season to equalize with Misa we get a projected 112 points
(42g 70a) regular season output for Martone vs.
62g 72a =134 points total for Misa in a65 game regukar season

Now 2 main takes fron this:

Both at almost same assists per ganepace...But Misa ahead on goal scoring pace per game

The other glaring take is that Misa kept up his 2pts a game pace from games 31-65,but Martone fell off that points per gane pace...

Martonecputvup 15g 23a=38pts in his last 27GP of the reguar season playobgcactotal of 57GP.

Projecting of he had pkayed 65 games(8 more games) and using hos goals and assists pace of hos fibal 27 GP ,if he had pkayed 35 more games insteadvofvjustc27 after January 11th 2025,hecwoukd have put up 19g andc30 a=49 points in final 35 GP..

That s a 1.4 ppg not the slightly more than 2 points a game Misa put up his lastc35GP(he had 32g 41a =73 poibts..

So tgecbug take is Martone dropped from ax2pppg to a 1.4ppg after his 30th GP,,Mosa kept up to slightly ahead ofxax2 pts /g pace in his final35GP.

It turns out that mostvofxNartibe's drop cNe in a big drclubexafter January 11tg to anoutc3rdcweekbof February ...then he finished better again with a highb scoribg pacecto finish off tgecregularcsesson.

Why this bog dip for 4-5eeeks?

Maybe he was pkaying injured.

This is for NHK teanscto figure out.

During this scoribg "slump" Martobe was cricket by 1 scout in a youtive reort just having watched him,as "kazy"...He wss nit obviously pjaying well I this longish stretch ofcweeks.. (That scout who caljex hom lazy was Grant McCagg of Recrutes.com who is on the Sick hockeyyoutube web casts..

If NHL teams think this was a "not the isual" performance turned in by Marineland fond maybe an injury affected hom orcsobevitger goidcreason not to be concerned that he fell off hosxearky seadon pace so badly, then maybe it is no big deal..But if they think he just slacked off in thismid srason dog day period, that would be very very concerning to me.

We do nktcwznt talent gkibg Country Ckub slacking.. so I hope itcreakjycwas injury hamoeribg his play.

In any case ...early season itcwas alk about Martobecand Hagens..but both disappointed govenvtgexearkyvsrsfon buzzing them and expectations for both these early frontrunner who had sonecwartsxto consider by review of their entire seadon.

To be fairvto Nartine he did seem to do better Gain over final few weeks of the season and in his pkayoff games.

Tgevotgrrcthibgbon Madtonevis the debate whether hevisxrealky a powrr forwardvor a big finesse skilkex wonder.

At first a lot of BradyxTkachuk comps..but itcseemrd more and more analysts came to downplay hisvphysicalnvobtributions and focus more on calling hom a skikkex wibger?
Does this mean atv6'3208 he is nit goibgvto be physical enough?

Tgerexare justca kot ogquestiobsvonMartine now when there was so much hype on hom early I thexseason.

I do not hink hevisxasvphysical as Tkachuk but likely more skilled.

So I do not know vif he is a power forward with great skill or merely a big sized winger with finesse and just an average physicality.

But either answer...more important is the conpete/consistency issues...does he have bad slack off games or shifts?

Shoukd Hawks draft a guy who when "on" uses his skilk to produce ..but when "off" is goibgvti give you nothing and no show games?

Shoukdcwe not seeking more reliable consistency and top work ethic to go along with sne skill Nd 2 way effort.

Or outvitcthisxway:

If Hawks did draft Martonexas the" Big winger " they need, can they turn hom into a Rantanen ?
Can they develop him to become doninant forward?
He has the goal scoribg...oasdibg..and goodchands to beca special Big wingerxer..but will his inconsistent work ethic and sometimes dormant physicality impede him from becoming a successful top six NHL player?

I have not even mentioned the pace and skating issues .

So a lot of good but a lot of concerns with Martone if KD selects him.

I know this sounds crazy but Desnoyers seems to be getting some serious momentum and could even be gone before the Hawks draft at 3 and leave us with Misa. I wouldn't be upset by that but it's more than just a faint possibility.

Do you guys think he’s a realistic option at three?
Feels like there’s a lot of upside there.
O'Brien feasted on a great powerplay but produced far fewer primary points and even strength points compared to Desnoyers. Their scoring rate being about the same (1.5 ppg for CD vs 1.48 for O'Brien) doesn't actually speak all that favorably for O'Brien. He plays an incredibly junior game that he will more or less need to reinvent to succeed as a pro while Desnoyers plays a simpler but skilled and intelligent game that should translate well to the pros. The OHL is a better league but it is also a higher scoring environment than the Q. Desnoyers was 2nd in his entire league in points per game; O'Brien was 3rd on his own team.

That's all without considering the playoffs, where O'Brien's production dropped considerably and Desnoyers' has increased considerably and led his entire league by more than .5 points per game.

I can see an argument for O'Brien having a higher ceiling based purely on the tools but I don't see the difference as that large and Desnoyers has a lot fewer holes in his game

It would also probably matter what they can get for Korchinski...could they move up for Schaefer and then deal Korchinski for a top 6 forward? That would make the deal more appealing.

Warming up to the idea of Desnoyers/Hagens at 3 and sending the TOR pick to TB for Howard. Then you're looking at a top 6 of something like this at the end of next year...

Howard-Bedard-Nazar
Boisvert-Desnoyers/Hagens-Teravainen

shortest top 6 in the league?
drafting a center allows more flexibility with your lineup, hedge the risk of Bedard ending up at W

If Desnoyers has Toews like qualities and Bedard has Kane like qualities why are they not potentially a fit to play on a line together? Then move Frankie to 2C and go add Howard to his line

Would Desnoyers be here next year at all?

Are you saying he is going to go to college?
With the new rules allowing for CHL players to play in college, I think it's going to become incredibly rare that players come straight to the NHL from Juniors. The exceptions will be guys of Bedard's caliber but I think we're going to see 16 year olds from the CHL play in college the following year now too.

So it'll be interesting to see what McKenna, Roobroeck, Belchetz, and Verhoeff do in terms of playing in college or staying in Juniors.

Especially from this draft class there might not be anyone who is ready to play in NHL next season.

Misa will be in the NHL, even if it's not in a top-6 role. I'd be shocked if he went back to Junior or NCAA.

Schaefer probably could have made the jump if he didn't lose essentially this whole year. Will be interesting to see what the team and he decide for him after he's drafted.

I don't see "it" for anyone at the top of the draft in terms of cashing out. Keep your picks and maybe even trade into a better mid-first too if the opportunity comes.

It's funny the Seth Jones thing right now, he's playing well in a great situation. That's what I see in this draft, players that have XYZ but need to be in the right situation to get there. There's no one at this point in their development who is going to mirror a Kane or a Crosby without simply being a big surprise.

Whomever the Hawks pick at the top it's a guy who will need the stars to line up in development, work ethic and the team around him to succeed.

It appears on the ice Desnoyers has a heavy work ethic. Off the ice reports say Frondell is a driven guy in the gym and in practice.

IMO, pick for drive.

Crazy question and I hate the thought of it but ,,, If the Leaf's dealt Marner's right to the Blackhawk's would you give Leaf's their pick back to them (If he signed with us) . Picking 25 will be very interesting .
