2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Who should we pick 3rd overall (assuming Schaefer and Misa are gone)?

I would be all over a guy like Mason McTavish or Byfield. I get it its easy to say trade the pick but who is available is still unknown. My point is the guys at 3 are all a mix of upside and less like sure things after Schaefer and Misa. I would rather go for younger vet at this point then a draft pick gamble

I understand what your saying but if it’s a two man draft only why would any team trade a good young player for the third pick

Is it ever just a two man draft? was it a two man draft when Makar went 4th or Rantanen went 10th, or Quinn Hughes went 7th etc etc etc...just make the pick and see it as another piece of the puzzle added and 2026 will be another...also, to your point, you're not getting value in return if its truly just a two player draft, which it is highly unlikely that it is, but if it was why would Chicago be the only team to recognize that

Have heard someone say and no I cant remember that Desnoyers is the best player to come out of the QMJHL in a long time.
He is. I find it comical when people discuss all the players in the 2-6 range of the draft. They compare the players they like to Hall of Famers, then say the guys they dislike are 3rd line plugs. It’s as if the in between doesn’t exist.

When i see Desnoyers, I don’t think he is a top 10 center in the league. Do I think he has that upside? Yes I do. When i watch Desnoyers, I see a player that will be in the 11-25 range of centers in the league. The caliber of player you expect to get is a Hintz/Aho/Thomas/Suzuki/Zibanejad/Hischiercaliber of player. A notch below true superstar, but a guy thats worth a hefty price and is rarely traded.

If he turns into those guys it’s a win at number 3.

Personally I have never understood the upside concerns with Desnoyers. He flashes some really great tools but just needs to do it more consistently. Production was great and plays 200 feet. One of his biggest knocks is the league he plays in which he has no control over.

Let’s remember Desnoyers and Frondell just both turned 18.Lots of room for future development.I just envision Desnoyers and Boisvert together being a really tough duo to play against.Made for playoff hockey.Frondell could be a strong cycle player who can finish. His shot is elite.Either player would add something to the pipeline we don’t have in the system currently.

It's coz he's being grouped together with Frondell, since they are very similar in many aspects.

But the puck handling, overall yet to develop frame, and some of the passes he pulls - the upside is definitely there and intriguing.

Agreed, seems like he can really put some muscle on in the next few years. The growth potential with him is pretty exciting and he already plays a fairly pro style game

Here's my list of names I will accept at 3 (aside from Schaefer/Misa, obviously):

Porter Martone, Cullen Potter, Kashawn Aitcheson, James Hagens, Roger McQueen (if somehow they get an encouraging medical report), Caleb Desnoyers

If it's literally any other name, Kyle needs to be fired.

ya because KD built solid veteran group of noted hustle players Foligno, Bertuzzi, Teravainen, Maroon, Smith to teach these young guys what speed and hustle really look like at NHL level
Only one of these guys will he around after next season. They aren't part of any building block for this team.

What is this? We get it, you like Potter but you're so ridiculous. If Davidson selected Potter over Hagens or Martone, you'd be happy with that? It's an utterly ridiculous take. You can say vague bullshit like "Potter does things no one else in this draft can do" -- like what? Skate really fast and not finish or make a play? That's great. This is the 3rd overall pick. You're not using it on a guy who's 5'10", 170lbs and didn't produce at a high rate.

I hadn’t looked at Potter’s numbers until you mentioned it…. But yikes, you’re right, not much actual production on the stat sheet for Arizona State of all schools. What’s the deal there?

If in 2011, the Florida Panthers drafted Johnny Gaudreau 3rd overall, they'd have been proven right

You would have called it utterly ridiculous

You are quite loose with your needs to be fired demand. With your track you have been needed to be fired to the sun many years ago...

Johnny Gaudreau *produced* at the level he was playing at, at a very high rate and he was one of the youngest players in the draft. Potter's numbers in both the USHL last year and the NCAA this year were just solid. He is not a lottery pick. You're such an unserious would-be "scout".

Potter would've put up those numbers if he was in the USHL this year. He's ahead of the curve.

He'll easily be a ppg college player next year.

You think Potter would have gone from 22 points in 35 games last year, playing with the USNDTP, to 72 points in 60 games playing on a random good USHL team? Sure thing. The leading scorer in the league this year had 74 points. Potter was not going to be leading the USHL in scoring. No chance.

Gaudreau was out-producing Potter playing u18 hockey in the same year that Potter was playing u16 hockey.

yeah I'm very confident Potter would've outproduced Giacomo Martino lol
