2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Who should we pick 3rd overall (assuming Schaefer and Misa are gone)?

Martone's short game around the net is impressive. He has the potential of being a PP beast, more so than Hagens, Frondell, and Desnoyers.
Hagens would easily be my 6th favorite choice. I just don't like what I saw from him this year and would be a disappointment to get him at 3 or 4 in my opinion.

Penn State would be fun. f*** Michigan. I'd rather him go to the east coast or Denver before Michigan.
I think it’s gonna be one of the 3 I mentioned. Thought I saw State might be in the drivers seat but that was a week or two ago

Prediction: Hawks end up picking second, we all assume Misa is the pick for months, but KD on draft day goes off the board and takes someone else and we all riot.

Just have a nasty gut feeling that’s how it all plays out.

Who could they really take that would be "off the board" at 2? Unless its like Eklund, O'Brien, level .. those 5 or 6 names everyone says can work.

I guess it depends if you would consider someone like Martone at 2OA to be a bit out there of a pick. To me it would be, but I could see the argument in KD's head he needs Martone as a big RW to compliment Bedard at C. I'd be fine with it at 3, but would be pissed with it at 2.

At this point I think I'd be happier with 1OA and missing out on the McKenna sweepstakes if it meant we aren't stuck at 3 or 4. Odds of landing McKenna in the following draft aren't great anyways.

I saw some interview clip where Martone was very open about pace being his biggest weakness and how it’ll be a major focus for him moving forward.

Don’t think he’s quite mean or physical enough to profile like a Tkachuk brother (who people love to compare him to) but he reminds me a lot of Matt Boldy. And I f***ing love Matt Boldy

Yep. I actually think he could end up being a little better than Boldy if he hits his ceiling.

He has a 40 goal type of shot.

The most well-connected reporter (Powers) has been hammering home how much they like Misa. Even hinting they would consider him over Schaefer. I don't think you have much to worry about

I wouldn’t riot, but if KD took Frondell at 2 I would lose a tad bit of faith in him. Just seems like leaving upside on the board in favor of a safer option.

Saw an interview w/ McKenna this morning too (was Jay Onrait interviewing him IIRC) and he said that his favorite player has always been Patty Kane.

Tell me McKenna wouldn't be an absolute DOG if he was on the Hawks where Patty Kane won everything imaginable.

Montreal, Calgary, Nashville, and Philli have multiple first rounders. I didn't include the Sharks as they
won't be trading their first pick.
I would think if the Hawks or Buffalo win #1OA that San Jose will be offering their pick plus to get Schaefer as they need D way more than a F and both Chicago and Buffalo would be reluctant to take a D and could be compelled into not taking one for a good offer.

Yeah no way. Misa is the quintessential KD/D type forward. He's fast, a goal scorer not a fitness playmaker, he has compete, a good shot. All the FO has been taking recently.

I think KD will be tripping over himself running up the podium to pick Misa, should the ping pong balls fall that way.

Same with Schaefer on defense btw.

Has James Hagens potential dropped really that much? He was considered as consensus number one pick when season started. His production in Boston College wasn´t what everyone was waiting for but it was not that bad either. I thought he had a good WJC-20 showing. Development isn´t always linear and what if he bounces back next year? I think he is someone Hawks should consider if their pick slides one or two spots.

Think he’s been hurt by the unrealistic expectations after celebrini’s freshman year.

The current Hawks braintrust has drafted 8 selections in the 1st round. Bedard was easy and 6 of the 8 had a pathway leading to the NCAA. It should not come as a shock if they draft Hagens at 3 or 4.

They've drafted just one selection (Kantserov) out of a possible 13 in rounds 1 & 2 that were developed soley overseas. Don't be surprised if they leave Frondell on the board.

What do you consider a drop?

He projects as a 2C, and he's still seen as a consensus top 5 pick.

Not just Celebrini but Fantilli before him and probably to an extent guys like Beniers and Kent Johnson before him

Hagens currently isn't a guy who gives you much beyond his production and his production is more in line with Beniers and Johnson than Celebrini or Fantilli. Promising young players for sure and sensible top five picks at the time, as Hagens would be now, but Hagens was thought to be a potentially special offensive talent. He hasn't even really flashed that at the NCAA level. He was good but not dominant at the WJC. It's the profile of a guy right in the range where he's being ranked I would say.

Could 100% become the best offensive player in the draft still. The pedigree is still elite and maybe there were injuries or other factors that led to a mildly disappointing season (relative to expectations). Not having access to that kind of info, there are other guys I like better in the top 4

Blackhawks land #1 and San Jose say falls to #3 what would you accept for pick swap? #3 and Eklund or Musty? #3, pick swap in 2026 option? like what would they have that they would give up to make it worthwhile knowing we also have no shot then to get 2026 #1ova because we moved up

For instance in McKenzie´s latest rankings he is fifth and in January he was second.
I couldn't tell you why Frondell got ahead of him, but Misa and Martone simply had better seasons.

For Misa he elevated even further in the second half.

I think Martone's production dipped slightly in the second half, but he still capped things off with a great showing in the playoffs.

All of that while Hagens stayed the same and didn't improve in any facet.
