2025 NHL DRAFT Thread

Who should we pick 3rd overall (assuming Schaefer and Misa are gone)?

That would be a really strong draft.....I don't see Poebezal sticking around that long.

If you have access to the article, a big theme and change in philosophy with Pronman over the last 3-5 years has been his prioritization of size. A lot of the smaller, skilled players available in this draft went later than consensus probably has them.

Ekberg went 133rd, Poebezal 98th, Katzin 113th, Benak 125th, Mooney 105th.

Even Kindel went 39th, which I'd be very surprised by. I doubt he gets out of the 1st round. Cameron Schmidt went 54th, which is honestly about right. He probably goes earlier but he feels like a 2nd round pick at or around the 40th spot.

The only guy I think that's really comparable to Spence in our pool is Boisvert. Spence is an agitating prick with sneaky skill and good hands.
Agreed.

Spence is something we actually don’t have a ton of. Big, good skater, good compete and decent skill.

I do agree he’s not gonna be a big scorer but I think he checks a box of something we need more of.

Better version of Spellacy.

I don't see a whole lot of skill/hands with Spence, and in the games I watched, he didn't do a lot of agitating either. He was willing to go to the dirty areas, but he wasn't a menace out there by any means.

Vanacker is a better version of Spence. Not as much agitating but he does a lot of it, he is always in the fight. Spence also played with 2 overages who dominated physically in Alfano and Fimis. I would be fine with them picking him but you don’t project him into an impact role in top 6. Vanacker is much more that guy, he has some really really nice skill and is one of the best in all of junior at taking pucks away on the backcheck.

All I saw when watching him was a bigger guy who skates well, lacks offense (even in junior) and was willing to forecheck and engage. I didn't really see him agitate at all.

See I like what you described lol. That’s a winning hockey player.

I get the upside argument for sure, but I think guys like Vanacker, Spence and to a lesser degree Spellacy are guys you win playoff series with.

The lack of depth in this draft makes me comfortable taking him at 25.

Andrew Shaw and Marchand were just fourth liners early in their careers. Go get some dogs with a bit of skill.

Maybe if you reduce Marchand’s early career to the first 20 games he played. The following year he had 41 points and 21 goals in 77 games. That’s not a 4th liner.

Slaggert has mustered 10 points in 49 games on a team where there really isn’t anyone blocking him but himself for more minutes.

Marchand was an undersized energy guy with a high motor and a ton of heart. He was not drafted in the third round because of his puck skills.

He was Cole Guttman.

Like Zonnon because his skating is mechanically very bad and he's still an ok'ish skater, so the skating could improve vastly and then he becomes a completely different player to his benefit.

Like Spence because of the lack of clear weakness in his game and development benefits of going to Michigan. I think it is generally well understood that coaches love to have players like this that can be relied on to eat minutes, which I think he will be effective at doing.

If Zonnon commits to Denver or Minnie or somewhere I feel good about his development in the next week, I lean Zonnon.

Slaggert too nice. Super religious and a coach's son (I understand him to be an exceptional human being). Don't want that in my bottom six.

Need him to embrace the owl god Moloch and become a heathen on the ice or he belongs in the press box or in another jersey next year.

Pretty big gap between the 71st pick and a Smythe candidate.

Yes, of course there is. Marchand is the exception to the rule, not the standard.

Even if they don't take Spence at 25 I hope they take someone with a similar skillset to him or even another Boisvert type of pick. Do you want something different?

My point is the first fifty you draft on upside. The rest you take NHL skills and hope for more.

Who do you realistically see lasting to 25 that has more upside in your opinion that you would take?

Another thing I like about Spence is he'll be playing at Michigan next year. Seems we've had some great progression from younger guys who played at the college level.

Between picks 25 and 34 they should be able to target someone in the Spence/Gastrin/Zonnon/Murtagh/McKinney mould and a project with some more upside like Potter/West/Ihs-Wozniak/Lee/Ryabkin. I don't really care what order they make the picks in but I'd be happy with coming away with one player from each of those groups (though I am still personally out on Ryabkin).

Spence and Frondell would be a great haul for our prospect pool. Boisvert, Frondell, Vanacker, and Spence is a great group of players to surround what we already have in Bedard and Nazar

That's pretty much my dream scenario. Then use the 32nd pick to take whoever has the absolutely highest ceiling.

I really dont want us to grab any defenceman this year unless they are really a steal . Blake Fiddler seems to really be undervalued and should be considered If he falls to the late 2nd rd . Okay just ignore this , I see Corey Pronman has him going 23rd . Too bad he doesn't have a bit more bite in his game.

Your "dream scenario" is using a top 5 pick to acquire Anton Frondell?

A dream scenario to me would be landing a player of Fantilli or Stutzle's quality at #3. That is not Anton Frondell.

Best case scenario this year is they take Martone who will be a stud top 6 winger and leader and then trade up to get a guy with a 3C floor/or/middle six wing like Hagens Eklund Frondell.......Nightmare scenario is Desnoyers at 3 and then overpaying to crawl up and doing something braindead like taking Kindle or Schmidt.

Well why stop at Fantilli and Stutzle if we're making up things that can't happen? Let's at least aim for McDavid and MacKinnon!

Yes, out of the available players, my dream scenario is they walk away with Frondell and Spence. I'll be fine if they take Martone too. I'll probably be a little bummed if they take Hagens but I can see the upside with him too.

Fine, that's your opinion. I prefer Frondell, Desnoyers, Hagens and O'Brien to Martone.
