HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

I think Rangers giving up 12th pick says a bit about this years draft strength. Really hope Habs either trade or get some steals.

I thought they gave it up cause otherwise, they’d have to sacrifice an unprotected 1st round pick in next year’s draft.
It's probably this more than anything.

While it's also an indicator that they aren't in love with any prospect but it's too much of a gamble for them to give an unprotected first now

It’s been well known that this year’s draft sucks long before today. And . . . McKenna.

After last year
KH will never show who he wants
Example Demi
This is the first year we’re seeing so many teams openly saying their top 10 picks can be had.

Hughes has more assets than he can use and multiple redundancies. The operative word is package — move up the draft as high as he can.

Yeah but they want to move those picks for immediate help. They don't want two lesser picks in a draft that's bad.

It’s going to hurt but he can always move some immediate help, in the form of any AHL player on the cusp or close to making the NHL team.

If Reinbacher’s knee is a source of concern, move him. Or Mailloux.

If Hughes is moving an established NHLer then it needs to be for an NHLer at a position of need.

Hughes can always try to include a third team to make it work or do a set up trade as was done with Romanov.

Immediate help is a legitimate NHL player who is performing in a top 6 or top 4 role.

Plus Reinbacher is better than most prospects in this class, it wouldnt make any sense to do that. Nor would any team really do that without medical due diligence on the knee if it was a problem.

We aren't really moving up into the top 7 range where they'd need to be to get a potential 2C. Its rare enough those picks move. The ones on the block would move for guys who legitimately move the needle with a NHL track record of doing so.

I was very clear when including Reinbacher, by adding the caveat if his knee remains a source of concern. Of course, a counterpart would do its due diligence but maybe the Habs’ tolerance for risk or their medical prognosis might be more strict than the medical assessments of a counterpart.

Yes it’s rare for top picks to move but as indicated this is based on the premise that this is an exceptional year in terms of how many teams are saying they are willing to make their picks available so prior years may not be reliable precedents.

There are other ways for Hughes to operate, which could involve a bundle where he involves a 3rd team, takes on a toxic asset, performs a set up trade, etc.

Hughes is creative so I wouldn’t count him count him out on terms of getting an end result. Just my 2 cents.

Toronto really poisoned the well. They have a crappy narrative where GMs who are fighting for their careers trade first round picks they won’t be around to see flourish to show that they are serious about winning now. The Leafs made multiple trades for so so or good players where they ended up giving up much higher picks than they expected that became players that were career albatrosses for the GMs.

The Rangers pick next year shouldn’t be really high, but with luck and the lottery it could be.

I also have no idea what scouts are seeing with Nesbitt over Zonnon.

Love the RD pipeline getting filled with giants. I’m in for Amico and Barnhill all day everyday
