HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

Remind me again guys; is Pronman the one worthy of attention to his mocks the closer we get to the draft? Or am I thinking of someone else?

There’s one of those that gets fed info as we grow closer and closer to the draft…

When he does his final mock, I'd pay attention to it but mainly at the top of the draft. He's been really good at getting information about the top 10.

Bob's list is the most accurate predictor of who will go in the first round.

The physical game in the playoffs persuaded me; if we keep both picks, they better draft the biggest, strongest players. Roll the dice on Prokhorov. We need a guy like that badly.

Even the defense must get more physical, in the 2021 mold. Reinbacher and Guhle are OK, Hutson is Hutson, but beyond that we need more tall defenders. Mailloux would fit but not sure if he's gonna be incorporated long-term. Draft 6 4+ defenders with your 3rd+ round picks and hope one blossoms.
If they plan to do that they need a narrative guy. The default narrative is the Toronto one that all the habs cups are ref creations, and that if the refs can’t help the Leafs they can at least harm the habs.

The last cup run worked out because Weber was old and respected so he could lead the D a little over the edge and refs would deal either way it. The current team has a bunch of small guys who will be called if they successfully hit bigger players but won’t draw calls no matter how blatant the infraction, because small again.

Xhekaj is tough, and he plays by the unwritten rules, but because he is young or whatever the calls will disadvantage him.

The habs need an old, respected, veteran who can persuade the refs to call an even game. Crosby would be good, but, if he’s available, he might cost enough to end the rebuild. It would be amazing both to have him play and to have him go and talk down the refs.

I doubt the habs get to the point the Panthers are at where they just foul constantly and the refs stop calling it after four or five penalties. It’s not really a habs way to play and the refs wouldn’t stop calling penalties on a Montreal team. The Flyers set a really bad precedent for expansion teams with their house refs who got the keys to the city.

agreed, strong thinking

RD are scarce, not sure I’d call it an obsession.
I mean it’s a bit of an obsession if you value the handedness of a player over the quality of one. Especially when we talk about draft eligible players. You don’t know who is going to emerge in your pipeline or if you get a Forsling-level waiver wire pickup, etc. Needs change year to year.

I still want the Habs to move up, meaning try like heck to move up. It’s where the assets on hand align best for a deal.

If finding a plug‘n’play 2C is going to be too tough, or the pieces don’t fit the puzzle, try to get the future 2C.

Or, get that much-needed RD.

In both cases, IMO, slight over-payment would be justified or acceptable.

The dream of Bill Zonnon in the 2nd seems far fetched...

This is the guy I want the most. Yes he's a late birthday, but the progression curve is there and the change of position to center makes it even more impressive.

He's a true Habs fan that started playing hockey because of Subban. Great story.
I see too much Samuel Poulin in Zonnon. Non draft for me

i would take a chance on Lakovic with one of our 1st round picks. We have to swing for the fences and also he will not have a big pressure with our prospect pool, ala Hage

Everyone talks about overpayment but what will the habs overpay with? Future draft picks? I don’t think the team is certain to be good next year and it would be easy to trade a top pick for a meh D or C, protected one year, whatever the next. It wouldn’t take much for them to be bottom 5 next 2 years.

I'm still holding out hope we make a crazy move up in the top 5 for Desnoyers.

It would take multiple trades since nobody in the top 5 wants to move down to 16/17. Probably first have to target Buffalo's pick at 9, then flip 9 + something else to get to 5. That's the path though.
