HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

Which would be a reason as to why he’d be available at 16. If he didn’t have question marks, he’d be rated along with McQueen/Martone.

Also funny to say he didn’t watch him in the playoffs, where he played really well. GMs, especially in the Atlantic, are going to look at the Leafs and say they want guys that up their level of play in the postseason. It’s just the way it is.

Erie was also a mediocre team that fired their coach halfway through the season for reasons that have never been made clear. Who knows what was going on. Spence is now going to a stable program that has a lot of success in development. I assume whatever was going on affected him or he doesn’t make the move.
I've never seen the top 6 upside with Spence, that's the problem. His lack of IQ and motor has been why he's been pinned as a third liner for me. Frankly, I'm not even sure he'll end up being better than Jared Davidson.

If there's one thing Bobrov values the most it's compete and IQ. Spence lacks in both. I'd be shocked if we picked him.

He's also one of the oldest players in this draft class, and he hasn't progressed this year. That's a red flag.

He clearly improved his goal scoring, there was definitely progression.

I think people are so used to the Habs picking Top 5 that they forget that players in the mid-1st always have questions, which is why they go mid-1st

I asked this draft specialist who the potential #2 centers would be at 16-17?

Nothing to do with where we pick. I'm quite confident I can get a very good puck hound, heavy forecheck crash the net player at 41. I have players like Vansaghi and Genborg I prefer over him.

As far as 16/17 goes I only have about 18 first round grades in this draft, so I'm sure we will get 2 of the players I like.

You’re not getting Vansaghi at 41. That’s part of my point, there will be a premium put on these players because of the playoffs. GMs have always loved size, and now it’s even more at the forefront because the Leafs keep on failing and the Panthers keep on winning.

No. I’d advocate taking him over Lakovic though, who is rated higher than him on lists. I don’t want a 6’4 player that only had 4 PIMs and was suspended for reasons unknown that had the police involved.
This is the first I’m hearing about this. Yeah, from our standpoint, and without any additional information, I wouldn’t take the risk, not after the incident that is currently at trial. Maybe scouts and management will have access to information that the public isn’t privy to and can make a more informed decision. Not a good look, in any case. Sucks because Lakovic was one of the guys I was hoping for at 16-17.

My point is I like Vansaghi and Genborg over Spence anyway. So there's no way I'm taking Spence at 16/17.

Someone correct if I’m wrong, but I think I remember reading that management was trying to acquire a 3rd first round pick? On maybe I’m spending too much time on HF and it was another team.

Either way, I wonder if we could move up using our 2nds/3rds/prospects. St. Louis (#19) only have 3 picks in this draft (1st, 5th and 6th), and Ottawa (#21) has an empty prospect pool outside of Yakemchuk. They could be good trade partners.

Simon St Laurent in one of his youtube comments said this about Spence:

"It's not the mere fact that he's a Low-Upside player, it's that, for a guy like him that has always projected as a middle-of-the-lineup player, he needs to excel at some specific facets and/or bring something unique, and he doesn't. His forecheck game isn't that good, his intesity/compete-level was disapointing all year long (haven't watched his playoffs yet, apparently he was good). I also have tons of clips of dumb plays from him."

Like I said before, 0 interest in Spence at 16/17. Even in the 2nd round I'd probably pass on him. I think he got labeled as this Gallagher type player early in the year and people just ran with it without actually watching him.
Spence -and William Moore were considered for exceptional status as 15-year-olds in Ontario.

Only Misa received the green light.

Misa has shown he deserved it.

@Habs7631 yes, read it here as well.

I’m wondering, given the perceived weakness of this draft, if 2026 picks will be sought after by teams agreeing to move back this year.

(2026 looks interesting)

Bingo.
My hope as well.
Pens are lacking picks/prospects/pipeline. We can overpay to move up for Bear.
I think this is plausible, for sure. I mean, the draft lottery was a bit of a kick in the nuts for us. We desperately need young center prospects. Drafting 11th now, well it is certainly possible that all seven of the projected top-10 guys could be gone.

I could see a situation where Dubas would trade down. Would Hughes deal, say 17 and a center prospect for 11? The Pens could also use left defensemen, SIZE and maybe another goaltending prospect. But centers are absolutely priority 1, no question.

These two GMs have dealt in the past, so I think we might see something again.
