HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

What's the opinion on Simon Wang?

Moves really well... Great skills and huge... needs to clean up his game... the team that drafts him will have to really have a good feel for his work ethic and coachability because he will need to control his game... I bet he goes top 50.

This draft will probably end up being not as bad as many think...

McQueen is intriguing but back injuries scare me. Certain issues can last for life. Hopefully he recovers fully but with backs you just never know. One hard hit and his issues could resume.

Everyone here would like take Martin / Desnoyers but they won't be around.
Spence nearly doubled his goal totals from last year 👀
I'm also keen on Cootes, Lakovic and Bear.

Spence is also going to University of Michigan next year, which I really like for him. He's already played 3 years of OHL hockey and imo is ready for a new challenge, but not pro hockey.

NCAA is perfect place for Spence to continue to grow his offensive game. In junior, he would have turned pro next year. Now, he can play 2 years of college hockey & go from there.

It's a much better development path for him.

Give me Cole Reschny over Braeden Cootes at this point. I've flipped my opinion cause I really was hoping for Cootes but I can't ignore Reschny after looking quite a bit more deep into him.

Reschny is just such a smart facilitator and puck distributor who has such a great feel for when to take the shot and when to make the pass. He creates passing lanes as well as anyone who is gonna be available in our range. He's a really quick thinker, high IQ guy, and still finds his way to the front of the net plenty. He's not tough but he definitely had some grit to his game, he's not soft for sure.

He's obviously stepped up his game in the big moments too, great playoffs and U18 tourny, hes trending in a very positive direction lately. I'm not sure if it was on here where someone compared him to Nick Suzuki as a prospect but I am definitely feeling that. If we use a pick on him I'd definitely be ok with that, even though he's a 5'10 guy the talent is very obvious. If he was 6'1 he's firmly in that top 10, no doubt.

Braeden Cootes is a nice player as well, but I'm not nearly as impressed with his ability to manipulate the D in the zone or off the rush. He skates himself into trouble quite a bit too from what I've seen and just lacks the high end creativity an average skater like him (or Reschny) needs to produce consistently. He is pretty defensively responsible and is a breakout machine at the junior level, but that's not sexy enough for a mid 1st pick for me. With Reschny I can easily see the translatability of his offensive game, I just can't with Cootes. I think we can reach for more upside with these picks.

That being said if we take Reschny, I would hope to be in on a Bear, Fiddler, McQueen (dream scenario) etc for a bit more size in the prospect pool.

This draft is intriguing because of the unending number of directions we could go in. I'm more interested in this one than I expected to be.

I would say it's possible to talk about Reschny and Berkley Catton in the same conversation... so I think he is another solid potential pick.

I like his hunched over skating... reminds me of Marchand and some guy that used to wear 99

Pronman has us taking Carter Bear (16) and Jackson Smith (17) in his latest mock. This was with Carbonneau, Lakovic, and Hensler still on the board.

For a reminder Wheeler had us taking Lakovic and Cameron Reid.

Bear and Smith are great, I'd be really happy with this.

I haven't followed this year's draft much because I think at least one pick will be traded and the other isn't in the range of players I was hoping for at the start of the season but in the unlikely event that injuries cause McQueen or Bear to fall to us I'd happily take the risk and run to the podium to pick them

Suzuki is often called Big Dick Nick. Simon, being 6'6" and 215 lbs can go as Huge Wang.

I would say with the Reschny and Potters of the world is that you are looking at guys that won't have a chair. It's about finding the guys with skill and jam to complement the skill we have now.

I don't disagree in principle, those guys wouldn't be my picks either, but isn't it the type of logic that got Philly drafting Luchanko instead of Buium "because we already have small defensemen"?

The difference here is Buiun was clear BPA but in our case Potter isn't clearly (or even at all) better than say Hensler. But I still think we have to be careful with taking guys based on the current makeup of our team.

Not only will the team likely change before they join us in 3-5 years, I say we should draft BPA in expectation of possibly trading that guy at some TDL in the future. Even if we can't find a partner before the draft, those picks will likely be trading chips in our contending years. So might as well maxime its value regardless of our current needs.
