HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

his size and skating/speed will hold him back if he doesn't improve there.
His technique is fine. He is on par with Suzuki as a 17 years old, he will have to adapt in the pro but he has high hockey IQ and he can process the game fast enough. To me he is one of the rare player in this year draft that you could come up 4 or 5 years from now and wonder how in hell he dropped like that in the draft.

I was hoping for Cootes since early in the year despite him being ranked outside the top 20. I also was on Ryabkin but he's a guy that this is where you need to interview him and figure out if he's just a lazy turd or what the problem was. High end skill but doesn't seem to want to work hard so that's a red flag but that's why they do this interviews and talk to their coaches, etc.. as fans just have such a lack of info as the only thing they can go off is what they see on the ice.

This draft looks like it will be wide open, I am very interested to see what Hughes has in mind as they must do something to improve the roster but I don't want any band aids as next years draft could be an epic one so either make a bold move or keep the rebuild going. They could look to trade up if say someone they really like somehow drops or and I know many won't like it but if you don't have a trade on the table for help and no one falls, you could look to trade down and then use your 2 2nd's to also trade up, have 3 16-26ish range picks if possible. Either way a lot can happen for this draft, next month is going to be nuts.

I like Murtagh a lot as well. Jam, heavy shot. Underrated playmaking.

I haven't seen much of him but I wasn't impressed in the 1 game I saw him early on in the WHL and while he was good at the U-18's, I find that tournament like the WJC's leads to people overrating prospects. We'll see how it goes but Reschny reminds me of when posters kept telling me that Kidney was our top forward prospect before he hit the AHL. I know the Habs need skill but small ave skaters that aren't very quick is a lot to overcome.

I don't scout prospects though so for me it's all about the day after the draft, that's where I step in and start watching as much as I can of all Hab prospects and by the end of the following season I will have a much better idea of what we have (as long they they were healthy of course)

Ryabkin is just not a future NHL player. He's Joshua Roy with half the motor + a few late hits that will get him suspended every year.

I can't find a single acceptable excuse for his level of effort this year in Russia or NA. I'll probably still have him late in my top 64, but he's effectively as DND as DND gets. Doesn't move his feet, has poor conditioning, got demoted to the wing, etc.

Him and Cameron Schmidt I want no part of.

Could definitely see our staff loving this guy. Captain of U18's. So damn solid. Projects nicely as a C. He is on the younger side and kept improving.

People beat up his offense sometimes, but I've seen flashes of a great shot, hands in tight and playmaking instincts.

Plays the game the right way. I like him a lot

That's why teams spend the money to figure things out, like talking to his coaches, asking him tough questions. The famous USA Head Coach Herb Brooks was well known for asking his players the most random questions like if you get pulled over but know you didn't do anything wrong, what do you do kind of questions. Fans often think they know everything cause it's so easy as you have a 50/50 shot of being right.

If he's lazy, which he does appear to be then the Habs need to figure it out, but he's nothing like Roy, this dude can smoke players with his compact frame, he has got some nasty to him, Roy avoids contact, isn't quick, strong or fast.

What answers could he possibly give that would ease your concerns?

"I didn't really give a shit this year in Russia or NA, but trust me, I've seen the light and next year I'll give it 110%" won't ever come across as sincere.

There's things that go on in Russia that are different from other countries. I always keep an open mind and never try to make it out like I know for sure what this is or that. This is why teams have so much more info then fans an why they interview these kids.

I think, having a proper off ice training, diet and taking his career seriously would be a good indicator otherwise all empty words.

Ryabkin came in at his KHL camp overweight/out of shape. He was the crown jewel of their KHL junior team, expected to become a top 5 player in the draft and he was very unprofessional, benched and shipped out. That's a very bad look.

It is but he wouldn't be the first kid to coast on their talent. The question is whether this was a wake up call or is he gonna fluctuate between trying and coasting like Joshua Roy.

If he had shown improvement in those areas this year, I'd be willing to give him a break.

I've been watching the USHL finals going on right now and it's Tynan Lawrence - an underager and potential top 10 pick next year - who's the straw that stirs the drink for Muskegon. Ryabkin is just lumbering away and providing a quality pass here or there. Nothing's changed.

I stopped watching him as no one was watching the vids I made of him but if he's not showing any improvements then that's going to cost him on draft day.

Draft hopeful Malcolm Spence is going to Michigan. He’s going to play with our boy Hage. Even more reason to take this beast who will now get to properly train like NCAA kids and become stronger.

Not a fan of Spence.
Very early birthday so if he was born a week earlier, he would have been a 2024 draft pick.
Production is kinda underwhelming. But most importantly, I do not see the progression year over year. It's too minimal for me.

I'd rather Brady Martin.

But my preferred scenario would be to use the 1st rounders to move up and try to get Desnoyers (especially if he is not picked by #8 or 9).

We'd all prefer Martin but so do many times drafting as of 7

I also share your concern with Spence, he might be a physical player but he seems way way more likely to peak as a third liner which is not something I'd target with my first round picks unless it's for a center in the 20s

A lot of the interest in Spence is how his game might be something you want come playoff time way more than during the NHL season, I wouldn't be opposed to the pick but wouldn't love it, if we grab a Reschny or Cootes and then get a Spence, I'd get the idea behind it
