HF Habs: 2025 NHL Draft: Part II

They've got to start thinking about a player that the habs could use in 3 years to surround the core with. Just getting the most skilled players who play top minutes on the PP in junior (but won't get close to the habs PP1) is useless for the most part. Who will complement the core well? of course if someone drops and is a homerun pick, you take them. But 2024 (besides the 1st round) looks like a lost opportunity. Can make it two drafts in a row. Sometimes the best player isn't the best player for you. Focus on getting the right player.

a few weeks ago i watched some shift by shift videos (good resource: Prospect Shifts ) of a few forwards who are above our range and in our range. my initial ranking:

Martin
O'Brien
Bear
Spence
Carbonneau
Kindel
Lakovic

loved the first three guys. i know that young athletes heal pretty well from achilles injuries but i'd rather give up an asset to trade up and get Martin than gamble on Bear. but i'd take Bear before the other Fs i have ranked after him, by quite a bit.

Spence was interesting but looked to lack the creativity of a top 6 F.

Carbonneau i think will be an NHLer. he has the size, the shot, and can put together some interesting shifts. if we keep both picks i'd take a shot at him.

Kindel, to me, looks like a junior hockey player. don't think his game translates. the announcers did say that the game i watched was the first one back from a long road trip, but i didn't love his game. skilled but disengaged.

again, just one game, but to me Lakovic doesn't seem interested in adding elements to his game that complement his size. he didn't engage with his body and often turned away from contact. his stick is good but he reminds me unfavourably of Kotkaniemi at the same age. a less talented Benoit Pouliot.

a few names have recently popped up on the radar that i haven't had the chance to check out: Cootes, Reschny and Murtagh.
probably going to check out some of the D at some point. seeing how far Buuium fell last year in a draft that was supposedly stacked at D, i'm sure some highly rated D will make their way to our pick.
He's much stronger, faster, protects and handles the puck better, is a true dual threat on offense, was killing penalties in the games I watched against Brandon toward the end of the season where he showed better than McQueen, etc.

He gats a bad rap for playing on a putrid team with nothing to play for, but he was a standout in the top prospects game.

Honestly, I think people just have Pacioretty PTSD, but a Pacioretty who's the team's 4th or 5th scoring option is very different from one who's the 1st option. I think he has all the makings of a player who makes a lot of teams look very stupid if he falls as far as he's ranked on Bob's list (16th, to us).

Moving up trade targets :
- Desnoyers
- O'brien
- Martin

Trade targets at our rank:
- Bear
- Aitcheson
- Spence

That's about it for me.

By far, one of the most boring draft year ever. I'd have absolutely no problem using our picks to get a high-end second line center.
If we find the draft boring, would the team with that high end second line center think the same?

My 3 targets at our rank if we are picking 16-17, especially Aitcheson, that kid has it all!!

The eagles after many poor drafts have been killing it lately especially in the 2nd round, they talk about how you MUST draft BPA. Of course football is different but to me it's always BPA except maybe when that BPA is a goalie because they just don't hold the same kind of value and are so tough to scout at 17/18.

Every time I see a post in this thread saying we need to draft for position I cringe.

Agreed. BPA is the way to go. However, would you be completely wrong drafting both Hensler and Mrtka, for example, who would also fill an organizational need?

only if they were BPA, which I doubt Hensler is but I only saw him once against Hage and thought how the f*** is this guy considered a top 15 pick. Mrtka i've seen a bit of, I assume he's going top 10, not really sure what to make of him though as he's got some offense for sure but don't know about the defense.

I trust this regime's drafting and their development. While almost every scout is the same with some additions and Bobrov at the helm with Lapointe, their mandate could be different and with the analytics department, their evaluations are more detailed.

Since 2022, these are selected players in different rounds. I'll list those that are interesting. Some might only stay at AHL level, some might never come over from Europe, but most have NHL potential:

1st round picks: Slafkovsky + Reinbacher + Demidov + Hage
2nd round picks: Beck + Hutson
3rd round picks: Engstrom + Fowler *Rohrer also a 3rd round pick and could be an interesting player*
4th round picks: Florian + Konyushkov + Protz
5th round picks: Davidson + Harris + Volokhin + Thorpe
6th round picks: Eriksson
How can you forget the 'generational' Mesar as a 1st round pick?

Why is Ryabkin dropping that far ? I heard attitude problems but to be almost out of the 1st round? he was supposed to be a top 5 pick, should we take a gamble on him at 17th? Or if he drops after 25th package both our 2nd to move back up in the 1st
This is the management team that wouldn't touch Michkov because of 'perceived' character issues. Now you believe that they will do all the maneuvering to draft a guy that the character issues were clear as day for all to see. Ryabkin is probably on their DND list, written in a thick Sharpie and highlighted in red.

Another name we should add to the list:
Milton Gästrin
He has impressed me a lot. He reminds me Adrian Kempe in his style.

A player we should target with our 2nd round pick is Matthew Gard. Very underrated, he has impressed me more than Jack Nesbitt.
