I'm excited about our quantity of picks because teams have been unpredictable lately. All of 22/23/24 saw some combination of off the board (Nemec, Carlsson, Reinbacher) or shocking (Simashev, But, Sennecke) picks that led to unexpected opportunities in the 8-15 range.
With consecutive Calder candidates in the oven, what follows from here is putting our version of a top D (Hedman/Pietrangelo/Makar/Theodore), a secondary guy (Toews/Forsling/Luostrainen/Parayko) and some versatile scoring (Point/Bennett/Verhaeghe/Schenn/Oshie/Wilson) profiles in place.
That part will always require trial & error and the # of picks we've accumulated will help in that pursuit.
As a result, I'm not generally a fan of trading up. If the right deal presents itself - sure.
Otherwise, in almost any draft year, I think that kind of move is tacitly accepting that your scouting budget is wasted capex / negative alpha.
