GDT: 2025 NHL Draft Lottery on May 5th: NYI 1st, SJ 2nd, CHI 3rd, UTA 4th

him to be bought out and sign for the league min for 1 year
If it got us Dobson, I might be okay with that. Unfortunately, I'm not in love with the 10-12 picks in this draft. I like Martone, Desnoyers, Frondell, Hagens, Mrtka, Smith, and Eklund (but we already have lots of small forwards) but don't love McQueen (gunshy on his back) or O'Brien, in the ten spot.

If it was something like 3rd, DAL 1st for Dobson (signed 8x$9.5M), Duclair, and Mrtka I'd be intrigued, as that would fix our RHD problems long term, but no way of guaranteeing that.

Ultimately, I'd probably opt for Desnoyers, Hagens or Martone, and hope to grab Fiddler, or try to trade up for Hensler with Dallas first.

Just not sure we can build a cup-caliber D with Dobson as the #1 (even if he'd be our best D by a huge margin).

Rooting for Detroit and CBJ to move up. Sharks keep #1, Misa and forward #2 head East. It'd be cool for CBJ to get a small dynamic american forward as well (though they may prefer someone else).

Yup...

I think the interpretation of the rule is that retaining your spot doesn't constitute a win.
Ya I read the rule, to look for that, didn’t say that specifically, so I’m not sure, but I could see that being the case.

San Jose and Chicago praying that they don't win it this year.

If one of those two teams wins and then trades the pick are they eligible to win next year or are they ineligible since they won even though they didn't make the pick?

It is, We actually were having this discussion on the Flames board and I found it on NHL.com on the page with the lottery results and this is how it's worded:

The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery marked the first year for the implementation of a limit on how many times a team can win a lottery draw. No single team can advance in the draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two times in any five-year period.

That doesn’t clarify it though.
That just says if your team has gotten a lottery ball twice in last 5 years, you can’t get another one, which everyone already knows.

If the lottery ball gives you second, the rule isn’t clear, if you were in second last in standings if that’s counts, as it’s still a lottery win.

It's moving up by lotto win that isn't allowed more than 2x in 5 years... the Sharks haven't moved up via win yet and can't this year since they were last. So they'll be eligible next year. Chicago and Seattle are the only 2 teams where if they move up via the lotto this year can't again next year.

re-read the second sentence....

Yes
I’m reading it as, you can’t move up in draft lottery again, if you’ve already had 2 lottery balls.
It DOES not eliminate the confusion. It should be more clear.

yes it does eliminate confusion, it's wordy but very clear.

It clearly states "advance"
It clearly states " by reason of winning a lottery draw"

What isn't clear about this? I'm not even trying to be condescending here, but it's getting hard to not sound that way when it's as obvious as the nose on your face what it's stating.

If you had the 2nd pick before the draft lottery, and you have the 2nd pick after the draft lottery, you did not advance. Advancing more than twice is prohibited, but retaining the same slot, even if you had to win a lottery draw to do it, is not advancing.
