GDT: 2025 NHL Draft Lottery - Held On May 5th (7PM ET - ESPN, SN)

Schaefer to me has the most elite traits in this draft and most of his issues are correctable and will likely happen as he gets older and fills out. My concern is as you mentioned he played 19 games and was out the rest so its a small sampling during his draft year and as you said defenseman after goalies are the most difficult to project.
Either way, if the Flyers come out of the draft with Schaefer or Misa, I’m thrilled
I mean, the gap between the 16 current playoff teams is 25 points.

The gap between the bottom 8 is 28 points.

The gap between the other 8 non playoff teams is 11 points.

Chicago is bad on purpose. That is what is bad for the game, IMO. It's a loser mentality. The NHL rewards losing in regular season games, and it rewards being artificially bad.

Haha, fair point!

The big sell is to the players - what is in it for them? Other than an extra handful of games to earn their millions of dollars... there's no trophy, so they likely don't care.

But as a fan? I would definitely go to a Flyers game if they finish 4th worst and they have a chance to win 1st overall. I get it, though, it certainly wouldn't be appealing to everyone.
There was really no way to make Chicago become competitive a few years ago. They had little of value

That would defeat the purpose of the draft. The worst teams in the league would have no chance of winning a tournament and dooming a 50-60 point team to a bunch of 8th overall picks is dooming them. For better or worse, sports are entertainment and business. If bad teams have no hope for the future that’s bad for the sport
100% this. I cannot emphasize enough that we don't need the lottery, or a play-in tournament, or the Gold Plan, or The Wheel, or any other overwrought concoction intended to "reward teams that are trying." What you're doing is forcing fans of a team that can't get up off the mat to continue suffering, full stop, and fans that have no hope spend no money, or at least that's what they should do.

Worst team, best pick. It's clean, it's simple, it's logical, and it still requires teams to not f*** it up, it just doesn't punish teams for being shitty in an unapproved way.

If you change the reward structure, you change behaviour.
When a team has been competitive for a decade, trading picks and prospects to contend, the wheels are bound to fall off at some point. What moves could have Chicago made over the last 2-3 seasons to change things? They are in a similar situation as the Flyers except worse. They had holes at 1C, 1D, 2C. Those positions almost always need to be drafted to have the player in their prime. It would be stupid if Chicago traded their 1st and a good prospect for someone like Brock Nelson. He wouldn’t move the needle at all

I get that, and I don't disagree that the current paradigm has programmed GMs and owners to start to think and behave in a certain way.

I'm just of the opinion that there has to be a better way than how it's currently structured. I'm certainly not the smartest person in the room. I was just having some fun with how I, as King Commissioner for a day, would structure it.

I'd even add things like let the President's trophy winner choose their 1st round opponent. If it's the entertainment business they're in, make it entertaining.

But I'm sure the NHL can come up with something better than this. Or maybe not :)

Always remember that trading the 13th overall (and two 2nds) didn’t ruin the team.

Trading the former 5th overall after a season for a bust didn’t ruin the team.

Last season’s choice at 12th didn’t ruin the team.

But finishing 13th worst and winning the 2nd overall absolute positively is the main reason this team is a failure. So, do we really want to win a lottery pick?

Debating if I want to watch this or just be surprised. I don’t know which way would be likely to bring luck lol

The redwoods fall as Bucci thunders EEEE LEVEN!! Tsunamis rise in the remote Pacific. Earth's magnetic field shifts. The tapestry upon the Temple sheers in two. Fire rains and water turns to blood. The earth falls dark. Silence

I would point out Hawks rebuild didn't start until the 2022 trade deadline when Kyle Davidson had interim tag removed (Bowman having been fired early in season) and made Hagel trade (TB 2023 1st and 2024 1st round picks went to Hawks)

Hawks had traded away 2022 1st as part of Seth Jones trade (Bowman mistake) so Davidson made the shock trades of Dach and Debrincat at draft and then took on Mrazek contract to jump into 1st round giving Hawks three 1st round picks that year

7th from Sens = D Kevin Korchinski
13th from Habs = C Frank Nazar
25th from Leafs = D Sam Rinzel

This was start of full tear down rebuild and continued with trading of Patrick Kane at TDL to Rangers in 2023 (Face of franchise gone as part of rebuild). Hawks won lotto on 2023 and ended up with

1st = C Connor Bedard
18th = C Oliver Moore

Past draft Davidson again made moves to jump up a few spots from TB pick (The odd NYI/Chi trade months before draft) and then traded back into 1st round with Canes (27 for 34 + 50)

2nd = D Artyom Levshunov
19th = C Sacha Boisvert
27th = LW Marak Vanacker

Davidson strategy of accumulating picks and trading up into 1st (He tried in 2023 but found no partner) has been by his MO since taking over

Honestly thought Briere was doing similar with asset management but last years Flyers 1st round confused me with trade down and then trading out of 2024 1st at end

Later I found out about agent issue with Buium and assume Briere liked 2025 draft over 2024 with that trade with Oilers. Thought 2024 draft has been talked about as deeper/better than this years for a while so odd for Briere to pull that trigger on trade with Oilers

Of course we will have to see how Davidson strategy for Hawks works out and Briere with Flyers but both sides are going to add another blue chip prospect to pools with our early round selections and as of now both Hawks and Flyers will add a late 1st round talent as well with Hawks having Leafs 2025 1st and Flyers having Avalanche and Oiler picks

Flyers also have all the 2nd’s this year. It sucks we will never know who he was going to pick if he made the pick last year. I expect he will use some of the draft picks this year as ammo.

I think a better way to determine the top pick is to put the GMs of the five worst teams in a UFC cage and last man standing wins first overall.

Grier is a big mofo and odds are he takes it, but Briere was always good at fighting dirty so at least he has a shot. Davidson wouldn’t last a minute, Trotz is old as dirt and Sweeney looks like the guy that everyone jumps at the start, so yeah, it will come down to Briere or Grier.

Maybe Flahr can burst through the ring floor and swallow Grier, it’s anything goes.

Flahr would be the guy throwing Danny a steel chair while the ref is distracted.

No team in the NHL would be better equipped to tank than the Flyers. We could really put the Buffalo theory to the test.

Considering Davidson just a few months ago had his 4th open heart surgery of his life (two at age 1, one at age 31 and this one) he definitely wouldn't be able to survive such an event

Now if there is some squid games marbles like faceoff, I could see Davidson winning

Trotz and Sweeney would definitely be Ali in such a scenario
