NHL Central Scouting released their final rankings. Regarding the NA skaters, #1-3 is predictable Schaefer, Misa, Hagens but then the big shocker Jake O’Brien at #4 and Mrtka at #5, Martone drop is real at #6! Jackson Smith at #13 with Hensler at #12?

I’m not surprised Mrtka is being ranked so high, big RHD with mobility always seem to get picked very high, and from some of the scouts I have read/listened to they prefer him over Smith. O’Brien at #4 does shock me though I guess I should watch some tape/analysis of him.

If by some rotten luck SJ has to pick 3rd, Frondell over Hagens right?
I would take Hagens quite easily, I don’t see Frondell as a C in the NHL. Frondell doesn’t really drive play well and feels more like a complimentary top 6 winger to me. I do like the fact be plays with some edge/physicality though.

Hagens would be a very nice 2C for us in case Smith at C doesn’t work out or if he does you have a good problem to have. In terms of the whole top 6 size issue, yeah in this scenario Eklund (undersized winger, wingers much easier to acquire+Grier has shown he likes wingers with size) probably gets moved for a D

It also would not be rotten luck….statistically the Sharks picking third is the most likely outcome for us, 55.7% chance we pick third.

It would indeed be bad luck to pick 3rd considering its worst case scenario. Also, Hagen's is 5'10 and had a good but did not exceed anyone's expectations kinda year. He trended down not up

I would not be angry if they chose Mrtka at #3. Ideally they could move down to take him but he fits a need and would help strengthen the D pipeline.

It wouldn't be bad luck. It would be the pick the Sharks have the highest probability of getting which is why I personally loathe tanking. I get why it's done and think it needed to be done, but it's only a good strategy if the lotto balls drop in our favor.

Any Russian or international players that might be better than Hagens. Michkov and Demidov are the only 2 I knew and they were better than some NA counterparts. Any elite skater in the same tier as those two in this draft?

If we do end up 3OA, might have to consider if anyone that might be better than Hagens.

Y’all want to argue about it not being bad luck to pick 3rd overall after finishing last. Haha sure it’s not bad luck to pick last in the last possible slot available to SJ. While having the best odds at 1

I can’t see MG being okay with Hagens at 2C. And Martone is really sliding. Frondell? Either way they better pick at least 2nd so we dont have to deal with it

Odds at 1 don't mean all that much. Teams with the best odds are first overall are 9-16 at retaining that spot in the last 25 years. in 13 of those years the team that ultimately won the lotto were 3rd worse or higher.

Gotta be Schaefer/Misa or bust. If we end up 3rd and Grier doesn’t like Hagens, they should trade down to build up more ammunition to possibly trade up from the Dallas pick. Don’t know a ton about Frondell but his transition issues are really alarming

I will also hold judgment until I read Mark Edward’s and hockey prospects black book. For anyone looking for more info on this draft. I highly recommend it. Good read and quotes from scouts working for NHL teams. His rankings do differ a bit from others but I tend to agree with his rankings over the years and his results have turned out well

Im coming around to hagens. His size scares me off, but then again, he was #1 overall rank preseason and had a solid, even if not off the charts season at BC. Not sure he's a superstar in the making and with Smith and Celly along with Ek in house, another undersized skilled F is not exactly the priority.

All that said, Smith may move to wing, and even if he stays C, They can go line 1A, 1B, 1C an kinda come at you talent up and down the lineup, almost like a Jumbo-Patty-Pavs type thing. if the in house larger wings mostly work out, then its not a bad play even if it's miles behind getting schaefer.

I was in on Martone, but I will admit, he hasnt wowed and he's pretty old for his draft year.

Damn I hope they get the lottery....

Yeah hopefully Cagnoni can become Hedman then
