2025 NHL Draft: Lose a ton for Porter Martone

Teams make wingers available for all sorts of reasons like we made Zetterlund available. Lots of guys have a price that a team is willing to move them for. Or in this case maybe the Rangers are returning us a favor for taking Goodrow off their hands. I think it makes sense to try and add that sort of player at the right price even if your pipeline is similar. We're still going to have plenty of lineup spots for those forwards to fill.

As for the draft, there's still so many scenarios possible especially if our top pick is 3OA. However, if we're missing out on Schaefer, I'd want to secure either a high end RHD prospect or an RHD that is able to contribute for a while starting next season. Whether that's finding a way to pick Mrtka, Hensler, or Fiddler or acquiring someone like Dobson, one of these things needs to happen this offseason if we're missing out on Schaefer. I think if you're going to move the Dallas pick for immediate help, it should be addressing a position we're not set up to fill for a while. I think Byram looks more like that guy than Miller does. I don't know if either would be worth the cost but if I had to pick, it would be Byram. My issue with Byram is what will he be if he's not getting the top offensive opportunities on our team? Is he still going to be worth that next contract? I don't know.

I can't wait for the lottery just to get more focus on what we can do. The Sharks could be crazy players if they draft at 3 and the Dallas pick. I'm hoping for Schaefer and using the Dallas pick to get an RHD.

I would much rather someone with experience who has shown they can handle the challenges of creating offense while being responsible. In terms of timeline I think our forwards are well ahead of our defense. We need a good, stable, proven guy for that right side.

Schaefer is a solid defenseman - but if there was ever a year to trade down from 1OA this would be it. The entire top-5 this year has pros and cons. Shaeffer is more RNH than he is McDavid.

Wait why would the Rangers consider trading a young, big productive LW for picks? And why would Grier even consider that now when that's basically his pipeline of forwards?

With the Sharks pretty much locked in as a top 3 pick. Schaefer is the clear choice at 1. Everyone loves Misa at 2 but I have some reservations about him. Nobody can deny the crazy chemistry he had with Chernyshov this season. But throw in Team Canada leaving him off the WJC roster and Misa being out of the lineup in Saginaw's most important game of the year, just makes you wonder. The talent is there but what am I not seeing about the latter stuff?

If the Sharks land at #3OA, I really, really like Anton Frondell over Martone and Hagens. If it werent for a couple of injuries and a slow season start, I believe the conversation would be is Frondell #1 or #2? I've been hearing Frondell's name longer than I was hearing Schaefer and Misa's. The shot, vision and puck skills are what I like most. The skating will need work but isnt below par. Throw in that he's played against men and has been good. Hate to use player comps but they are up there with some of the best.

Now with the second 1st the Sharks have, I would like to see Grier get creative in either package one of his 2nds to move up into the late teens as I feel that's the cut off for talent in this draft. Or make a move not by offer sheet but by trade on one of the RFA players that teams will have a hard time structuring in their payroll to help shore up their defense.

I see someone like K'Andre Miller or Bowen Byram being it. Would the Rangers accept DAL '25 1st, COL 3rd and Ferraro for Miller? Rangers get some mild cap relief, a player that fills in the left side of their defense and future assets. Sharks get a solid middle pair guy who might have some upside left. I like Byram but the price would probably be higher and would include someone like Cagnoni. I really like Byram's upside and think there's another level that's untapped.

Ugh. Sharks could have had Miller at the draft. We picked Merkley only to have NYR trade down and take Miller right after us. They knew we made a mistake right on draft day when the name was announced.

We need both a proven one to handle the duties now and one we can develop into that sort of player down the road. Everything else is relatively covered.

Schaefer is seen in a higher light than all recent D prospects other than Dahlin. He is the perfect final major piece for the Sharks. They should offer Dal and either 2nd rounder to move up if they don’t win the lottery.

I understand about the prospects but you need to show some improvement at this point. Grier needs to improve this team this summer.

Every year there are going to be draft prospects that look enticing. Its been fun to follow mock drafts and brag about being at the top of the organizational rankings for a couple years. But that's not adding any banners to the rafters. That's not something I can look back and feel happy about. We have been a miserable team for half a decade now. No matter what, we will probably be bad for another couple years. But if the turnaround doesn't start this offseason, it just extends the misery and I am so over that.

If we are in contention for #1 overall again next year, I will be highly disappointed. I want to see Grier add a couple solid pieces to the team this offseason that are not just Jan Ruuta or Codi Ceci types. I'd like to see Year 3 Eklund and Year 2 Celebrini and Smith make noticeable jumps in their play and impact. I wanna see Askarov and whoever else provide little better goaltending than we got for the most of the year this season. Wanna see a couple more of the highly touted prospects make a decent impact. Want to see Mukh establish himself as at least a solid NHLer. These should at least make us better than the absolute worst team of the league. If it doesn't, then I would start questioning the development going on.

Sure, every year there are going to be draft prospects that look good, but there aren't going to be generational prospects each year. Next year is a Sidney Crosby type year. I won't be too mad if we're near the bottom. I feel like all the bottom teams should get a bit better and some of the 5-10 teams could get worse. There should be more parity among the bottom dwellers next year, IMO.

The goal for next year is to start moving out of the cellar. The team will still be picking top 10 unless lightning strikes with the new kids (Musty, Chernyshov, etc).
