Huge deal. Magic number now at 9, with 6 games to go for the sharks and 5 for the Hawks. Actually at 8 because of the tiebreaker situation, I think. So four Sharks losses OR Hawks wins and we've clinched worst.
Sharks can go 2-4 and wrap it up. Hawks probably have 1 more win in em too. So realistically probably 3-3. Like their odds

In simple terms: Sharks need to get four or fewer more points in their last six games than Chicago gets in their last five games. Feel pretty good about that at this point considering we have no easy games left.

Can anyone think of a legitimate way to get Buffalo's pick this year?
It’s not likely but I think it’s doable. We can do the reverse-Arizona to move up to 11. We could then trade that and the Edmonton 1st to get there if Buffalo wants to move the pick. Is it worth it though? Are any of the post-four prospects worth two late 1st rounders, an early 2nd, and a late 2nd? If one of the top four dropped there, I could understand it. Maybe I can be sold on someone in that 5-10 range but I don’t see it currently.

Buffalo's currently sitting at 7th, so I could see the Sharks trying to move up to get Radim Mrtka or Jackson Smith, regardless of who they take with their own pick. Biggest weakness in the pipeline is D right now, and I don't see any reason not to take a shot. I imagine Buffalo wants guys that can help them now, and I could see them biting on something around Graf(or other forward prospects) and Ferraro plus the Edmonton or Dallas 1st. This seems like more of a pipe dream than anything though.

I've seen enough Buffalo trade threads to say that yes, their fans feel they are looking for ojayets who can not only come in and help right away, but to also help change the culture. They seem pretty set at the wings and LD

Nesbitt with the Dallas pick
Bedkowski is someone I mentioned before with the Sens pick
I'm undecided with what do do or whom to pick, with our own 2nd
I like Nesbitt there compared to who else I see on given rankings. He tall, skates well and can fill in at either C or RW.

Not without moving someone we don't want to move. We don't have any of the pieces they're looking for (right-handed D, two-way centers, established players).

I feel like he's a 4C at best.

Apparently Adams was a big fan of Eklund and wanted to trade up to get him. Not advocating for a Gecko trade but Eklund as a base could conceivable get it done.

I don't see a way that would work. That's solving a problem by creating another. If Eklund was like 2 or 3 years older then maybe you could argue he's not on the timeline of this team, but he's still in the wheelhouse with everyone else as the "veteran" of that group.

I'm not expecting a top 6 C to be had at the bottom of the 1st round. Nor, do we really seem to need one. I see a raw prospect that could win a spot as a middle winger or center.

I absolutely agree and wouldn't trade Eklund for anything short of an egregious overpayment. I was just saying that's probably what it would take for Buffalo to trade their pick.

Reactions: Grinner
I haven’t followed this prospect class nearly as closely as I have others in the past and I know you definitely do your homework. Curious of your opinion on Hensler? It seems like his stock dropped way off over the course of a year. Is he just not as good as scouts once thought? Is he worth trading up for since he’s a RD?
Logan Hensler is projected to be drafted between the 9th and 20th overall picks, which means he would likely be gone by the time the Sharks pick at #28. Given this, the Sharks shouldn't use their 1st overall pick on him, especially with a better defenseman like Matthew Schaefer available. Hensler's strengths lie in his ability to defend against rushes, make quick decisions during puck retrievals, and execute effective zone exits. However, his in-zone defense and physicality still need development. Overall, his skill set suggests he has the potential to become a top-four NHL defenseman. A list of dudes I want at 28th and 33rd:

Unlikely:
Malcolm Spence
Blake Fiddler
Kashawn Aitcheson
Braeden Cootes

Realistic:
Cole McKinney
Henry Brzustewicz
Carter Amico
Bill Zonnon
Shane Vansaghi
Ben Kindel
Jack Murtagh
Cameron Schmidt

There are a bunch of RHD candidates that seem appropriate for the Sens' 2nd down in the early 50's too, I kinda like having a pick there:

Charlie Trethewey
Sean Barnhill
Quinn Beauchesne
David Bedkowski
Peyton Kettles
Carlos Handal
Alex Huang

And of course Luca Radivojevic and Anthony Cristoforo would be good mid-round shots.

In the end, I wonder how high these guys will go. The RHD premium seems more intense these days, as I genuinely can't find more than 50 actually decent RHD in the NHL right now.
I’m like 90% sure you have me blocked but a couple things here. I think your unlikely list is more like really unlikely. All those guys will probably be gone by 20 or at least most. I also think Tretheway is long gone by early 50s.

Yeah, I’m not advocating using a top 3 pick on him. Was more curious on his drop off in the mocks. Trading the Dallas pick and maybe our own 2nd to move up if he’s still on the board in the mid teens could be an option.

And I'm saying that I don't think Nesbitt even is skilled enough to have 3C upside.

Sure, call it the "really unlikely" list if you want. But also, stranger things have happened. I didn't think Musty would be available at 26, and I certainly didn't think Chernyshov would be available at 33.

Lol. That's you
I was hoping for a little more explanation than "I see a middle-six center" when I asked what you liked about him.

As I said, the reason I don't want him with 28 or 33 is that he looks like a third liner in the CHL. Same situation as Svoboda looking like a third liner in the NCAA. Guys like that don't translate to being top-9 NHL scorers, but they can make great fourth liners if everything goes right. And I don't believe Nesbitt has top-9 NHL scoring talent.

Obviously you disagree, so I was hoping you could make that argument for him.

Hensler's game is missing that 'grab-it' mentality. He has moments when he jumps up in transition and makes something happen. Another option for the Sharks in the 2rd round (pick #52) for a right-handed defenseman (RHD) is Henry Brzustewicz.

Here are the top 10 Defensemen in the draft.

What a present the Sharks got from Chicago today. With 6 games left, they now only need 4 losses to secure top-3 pick. It's entirely possible that we could end up picking 3rd overall. But ensuring that we get no worse than 3rd overall is nice. Any of Schaefer, Misa or Hagens would look great in teal next year.
