Our tank commanders are still very strong. Our bottom six is atrocious and Ferraro and Desharnais trying to kill penalties in front of Georgiev is impressively bad.

Worst case scenario is the finish 31st, drop to 4th, Martone goes 3rd, and then they reach for someone with middling talent because they think Hagens is too short.
Then you probably get a haul for 4 because someone will want Hagens badly. Maybe drop down to 9-12 and get an NHL-ready D prospect to go along with that pick. Sounds pretty good to me.

Winning 24 games and picking 12th sounds pretty terrible to me. Sincerely asking - have there been many of those types of trades with valuable prospects included?
I don't think there's a haul out there for Hagens at 4. Nobody to trade back with seems to have anything of value to us and/or likely has a real desire to go for that swing.
Islanders potentially and Philly(perhaps not a haul but they are desperate for a C and would trade up a spot or 2 imo). Islanders have the need(traded Nelson), have assets to get a deal done, and NYI is Hagen’s hometown team.
Think the sharks should take Hagens over Martone and simply keep if picking 3-4 but understand why many disagree. I have Hagens comfortably @3 and think he pushes for best in this class 3-5 years from now
That Islanders potential is dependent on Dobson's contract demands, if any, with the Sharks. They have nothing else worth putting that pick on the table. Even if Dobson is willing to re-sign in San Jose for 9 mil AAV, he shouldn't command that pick alone nor that pick swap from 4 to 13. With Philly, nothing they offer is worth moving down. Like, you could get a late 1st or early 2nd with moving down two spots but what are we really looking at using that for that we can't already do with the Dallas pick or the Edmonton pick? I don't think it's worth it when either Hagens or Martone would fill a spot we could use filled.
Conceptually I'd be willing to trade even 1OA for the appropriate RHD. Who that would be? I don't know. Those types of elite RHD command a premium in the league. I am expecting both Sam and Cag to make the team out of camp next year. That will definitely help our defense - but also creates a left-side log jam.
That said I think you are right that there really isn't much there that makes sense. In the end BPA is always going to take the day. If that's a forward, great. If that's another LHD, just as well.
Conceptually, sure. Dobson ain't that guy. It'd be someone like Makar but obviously that isn't happening.

I would say no. I wouldn't do that without our 2nd rounder. I don't think the drop from 4 to 13 justifies getting Dobson when he's going to get 9-10 mil and probably not great value for that deal.

I think ultimately whoever we get at 4 — Martone, Hagens, Frondell — will be too valuable to trade for Dobson and someone just okay at 14.
Dobson signed long term at 9-10 million is worth the #4 overall on its own. I would absolutely do the pick swap and hope that Mrtka, Eklund, Smith drop or just pick Hensler if those 3 are off the board.

How is Dobson signed to that contract worth fourth overall? There is no precedent for that that I’m aware of. Guys in his spot don’t get a top ten pick.

Top pairing RD might be the most scarce position in the entire NHL. I would argue that there are more Franchise 1C’s than top pairing RD. If you have the chance to lock up a top pairing RD for almost a decade you do it. Hagens or Martone would not be core pieces of the rebuild.

Thanks God we don’t have some of the people on this board negotiating trades. Top 3 or 4 pick for Dobson? Ridiculous.
You can’t skip steps in a rebuild. It’s not time to acquire a player like Noah Dobson.

Not even close. Look at the quality of 1Cs to win the cup compared to the quality of 1Ds to win the Cup. The worst 1C in recent memory is like Ryan O’Reilly or Jack Eichel. And both those guys were on teams whose 1RD was clearly a worse player lol

You don't need a top pairing RHD to win a Cup. You do need a high-end #1C to win a Cup.
And arguably neither would Dobson especially at 9-10 mil. He’s had one season where he’s produced like one. I think the team can afford to wait for a better opportunity.
