2025 NHL Draft to have revamped look

The top prospects will have the ability to be present at the draft, which will be held at the Peacock Theater on June 27 and 28, but team executives, coaches and scouts will not be present for the most part.

I'm being reminded of Covid Draft 2020. Why is the NHL doing this?
Because it's a waste of the GM and scouting staff's time (and the owner's money) to travel for the draft. They're better off at home in their offices.

Let the celebrities and non-hockey operations staff handle the ceremonies.

It's going to be a 1 year deal based on GM Meetings. Came down to the whiny GMs not wanting to be in a fish bowl when making decisions and having their conversations with others observed. Meanwhile, that is the only entertainment after pick 15 in most drafts. Bettman wants the draft back to normal and sounds like it's going to happen per Friedman. This year will be a temporary change.

The commentary on 'turns out much of the cost to get the scouting team to HQ is close to sending them to one city' is kind of hilarious. I imagine that's a bit of an exaggeration- but maybe being at home is a 40% savings (HQ support staff, GMs, AGMs, ect. don't need a hotel room or flight). Even then, it wouldn't surprise me if he draft is in your team's city, you still get everyone in a hotel for two nights. This limit family distractions during key decisions and take advantage of having everyone in the same city. Now we're down to a 15% savings to deliver a lesser product, spectacle, and above all experience for the 17/18 year olds being drafted, and it reduces the amount of connections with other folks in your industry.

Can't imagine they don't go back to a centralised draft. Bettman is wrong on the playoff format, but dead on on keeping it to 16 teams and a centralised draft.

I don't know who really knows, but the buzz around the draft last year was that it was awesome for the fans but a huge PITA/cost for the owners/teams who would rather just be in their offices, and as a standalone event probably didn't even make the NHL money. So I wouldn't be surprised if it stays the way it is, which is the NFL model. But I am not up on the gossip.

I wonder how much the cost of the Sphere was. If significant (I know it's owned by an NHL owner, can't remember which), than I'd get that, but that seems more like a cost covered by the NHL- which doesn't seem to be an issue. Maybe it comes out of HRR expenses since Bettman doesn't seem to care about it.

More than the current poll, I'd like a poll to see who people want at 3rd overall with the assumption that Schaefer and Misa go top-2.

Options: Hagens, Martone, Frondell, Eklund, McQueen, Desnoyers, J. Smith
My rankings at this moment (and likely to change): Frondell, Martone, Hagens, Eklund, Smith, Mrtka, Desnoyers, McQueen.

Added Mrtka cause I really like him but honestly Martone and Hagens just don’t excite me. They both have this like laziness to their game that I just think they’ll disappoint. Laziness is obviously not the right word cause these guys are/will be pro athletes. I might even consider dropping both of those guys down a bit more.

I mean it makes sense that teams would rather stay home. Let’s be honest they probably mostly work through the night on the 26th, 27th so it’s probably better to do it and then be able to go home after. Also while a majority of the scouting data is already digital, you can blow it up on a much bigger screen and not care who sees within your own org and not have to worry about other teams seeing it.

I actually think it could also lead to more trades in a way. Teams aren’t all together and hearing others conversations. It could also lead to more surprise trades. Instead of media standing literally just right at the NHL table waiting to hear about trades, these things actually have to get called in and such. Definitely possible we could see some more trades announced by Bettman which would be way more fun.

I will never buy that a bunch of scouts, agents, etc. don’t want to fly to Vegas, that seems crazy.
I mean most of the scouts aren’t going. Just the head scouts for the most part and they probably don’t have time enjoy the trip. Also sure maybe they’re okay going to Vegas but are they okay going to Detroit or Carolina or Dallas or whatever other non tourist destination place is out there.

So it's not a cut and dry answer but generally, there are benefits and drawbacks for everyone to being in person.

This article: owners and GMs are split, hockey departments want to be in person.

This article similar. Being in person is fun, but costly, and hard to schedule with free agency right on its heels.

26 of 32 owners voted to go remote but some of them are backtracking, because it also costs money to host their scout team in their own city, among other reasons. Might switch back, might not. This article from today.

Yeah, I would happily pass on a trip to Las Vegas, but I'm also the wierdo who hates having to go to Hawaii for work (long flights, hot, awful traffic, awful food, and no time or energy to actually do anything that might be fun because of work).

Actually, that list of reasons might apply to Vegas too.

I would, man Vegas sucks these days. As someone who doesn't gamble it's just a dirty, overpriced, sweltering, boring town now.

I've never been a fan of Vegas but as a guy who works with ad agencies and execs and sales people, they've never been the kinds of people to pass up the idea of Vegas. It makes sense that the owners don't want to do it because it costs them money and they're mostly older (and probably go to better, fancier parties) but yeah, I'm sure hockey op guys like @coooldude mentioned love it.

The Sphere is ridiculously expensive. That said, I enjoyed the last draft as a TV viewer.
