It's not irrelevant but it wasn't the point of the trade and I bet Grier would have done it without the 2nd if absolutely pressed.

Right, goes without saying.
I doubt that but I don't know how it gets proven one way or the other. The Sens don't give up that 2nd for no reason from the Sharks perspective either.

I don't mind the philosophy. I'm more concerned about the return for Zetterlund being underwhelming. But I'm willing to give Ostapchuk a chance though he didn't do anything impressive yesterday and it's possible even a late 2nd can be good enough to get us an overpaid player in a spot we may need. Could be a useful piece to bring in someone like Dougie Hamilton, who knows?
is it underwhelming? seems like a 2nd+B prospect is the general going rate for a capable middle 6 scorer.

Specifically for a 5'10" one-way middle-six winger.

I obviously have no proof of that, but I feel like that was the negotiation portion of the deal. Grier has stated that he wasn't moving Zetterlund without the right player being made available in return, and that the Sens had been asking after Zetterlund all year and it was only when Ostapchuk was made available that he was willing to move Zetterlund. The 2nd isn't nothing, but I think the deal could have gotten done without it.

One would think, but you know we're going to be hearing about it the rest of this season when Ostapchuk produces nothing because he's stapled to Barclay Goodrow.
Hopefully the fact he was traded for Zetterlund will remind people not to judge a young depth guy acquired mid-season. Probably not, but one can hope.

Ottawa's usage of Zetterlund really shows his limitations. On a shitty team like the Sharks, he was able to play in a top 6 role. On a decent team, he is ideally not one of your top 6 forwards. So, that leaves the 3rd line next. Which I know a lot of us have said that he is a solid 3rd line winger, but is he really? He is bad defensively and is not trusted at all to be a PKer. Which are the 2 most important things you want from a third liner. You want them to be your primary PKers, so once that is done, the top 2 lines can hop on. Zetterlund does not offer that. So, he can't play on the 3rd line either.

As a result, he is stuck being a sub 10 minute a game 4th liner on Ottawa. We may miss his 20 or so goals a year now, but when we are a decent or better team, he would ideally not be a major part of it. I was upset about the trade at first, but honestly its been easy to move on.

You nailed it here. And when considering we all view him as a good 3rd liner then...how much money was he going to ask for as an RFA this summer? Probably top-6 money.

We won’t like it, but that’s Griers plan going forward. Everyone under 6 foot is gonna get shipped out for grinders like Ostapchuks. We’re not gonna win with a team full of Smurfs.
1 dimensional smurphs without an elite trait*

Smith isn't big, but profiles as an elite offensive producer and PP guy. Celebrini isn't big, but is just elite at everything.

Eklund has some jam to his game and is a passable PKer when needed. I don't think it's sheer size as much as it is a style of play that Grier seeks. Eklund can be a pest, scores, and defends which is why he's likely to stick around even though he's 5'11.

The fantasy of Misa and Cherny playing together on our second line with Smith and Celebrini on the first is arousing. Who cares about defense? Score goals and make Askarov have to make 50 saves a game.
It's less sexy compared to having a homegrown elite piece at all 3 levels (Celebrini, Schaefer, Askarov), but having that Misa line and then dealing from the Musty, Bystedt, EDM 1st, DAL 1st, etc. pool to go get top 4 D-Men that are good but not elite isn't a bad option either.

Be sort of an Edmonton style build, but hopefully not getting suckered into a Darnell Nurse contract and no goaltending. It can work if you do it right (though having Schaefer is just cleaner cut and allows us to maximize our trade capital better as top 6 wingers are a lot cheaper than top 4 D).
