I am optimistic for our tanking efforts after Grier traded away Walman and Zetterlund. Good value on Walman, bad value on Zetterlund, but that's another topic. The end result is we're a much worse team after this trade deadline. I think losing Walman will hurt us more than Zetterlund. Comparing to CHI, we definitely shaved off more talent than they did.

I have a feeling part of the reasoning for Grier's trades is that he really wanted that last place and the best shot for Schaefer. If we ended up with Schaefer, then losing Zetterlund isn't so bad.

That shootout winner was his ticket out of here

I'm hoping that moving on from Walman will give Mukhamadullin more of an opportunity including the top power play. I don't think he's great at the puck handling but he seems pretty reliable and that might just be all the top unit needs. I'm much more comfortable having Mukhamadullin deal with the typical PP turnover into a two-on-one against than I was with Walman back there.

That IS the silver lining for me too, that Muhk is going to get a chance to really prove his mettle: I think it’ll be good for him.

I also love the end of the season “we’re terrible why not” call-ups to see if we get any Cagnoni action, or some top 6 time for Graf/Kovalenko. I actually think Graf really deserves a look in Zetterlund’s spot — he’s been making some really good offensive plays lately and I want to see what that looks like with guys like Smith and Wennberg.

I also wonder if Cam Lund will get a look this season after Northeastern’s season is done maybe on Wednesday?

Grier outright said that Lund, possibly Havelid, and maybe Musty/Chernyshov, depending on their season length, may all get a look. I expect it’ll be in the AHL but who knows.

He said he hopes to sign Lund after season end.

It IS exciting thinking about all the prospects who are finally coming into the Cuda next year.

I thought it was a requirement for ncaa signings to be in the nhl to finish the season like Graf did last year and Bordeleau before that. I would expect Chernyshov and Musty to be AHL adds after their season but we’ll see.

I don't think that's the case. Jacob Quillan signed with the Leafs at the end of his NCAA season last year and played seven games with the Marlies. So unless there's some quirk about UDFAs vs. draft picks, there's no reason why Lund couldn't play for the Cuda.

Now, Grier may give him NHL games as a signing incentive, but that's a different story.

I don't see anything in the CBA mandating where a college signee has to play.

Back to the draft.

I haven't had the chance to see him since the WJC, but the guys at EP have recently published some glowing reports about Logan Hensler from five different games in January and February, saying he looks night-and-day better than he did at the beginning of the year. He's only got one or two games left in his schedule, maybe he falls under the radar since he's too old for the U18 and definitely not good enough for the men's worlds?

Halts? Igor and Q are already signed to NHL ELCs.

All depends on when their season ends.

Sharks season ends 4/16.

Cuda RS ends 4/12. Right now they are in playoffs position. Playoffs start the following week.

CHL RS ends circa 3/23. Then league playoffs (circa 3/25-5/20). Then Memorial Cup runs May 22 - June 1.

So drafted guys may be available before end of AHL RS if their team is not in playoffs. Or maybe after league playoffs circa May 20, if Cuda are still playing. Or after June 1 if their team goes all the way.

The four guys under contract can show up to play for Cuda or Sharks. The other CHL drafted players could sign an ATO or AHL deals, or NHL ELC, to play with Cuda.

Feels like Grier has telegraphed that we won't be making the DAL pick, but if we did there are a few sneaky value picks that might look good. Amico or Fiddler are the other ones that had more hype early season and would be intriguing possible droppers due to injury or whatever. Hensler I have to assume didn't go on the roller coaster in the pro scouting ranks as much as he did in the public lists, so maybe he was always and remains 10-15 pick, but one can dream.

He suggested he would be trading picks for players, but I kinda feel like picks aren't that valuable right now.

As I've said before, I just don't think there are literally any teams trying to do a full tear down (like I can't identify even one) and cap space is not at a premium like it was last off-season.

If the reports about Hensler are true, then I wouldn't hate packaging picks for him.

Boston is definitely tearing down. Which would maybe mean, target Hampus Lindholm? Could start with DAL 1st + Musty + something

I'm eyeing Jack Nesbitt for the Dallas pick
