2025 NHL Draft: Lose a ton for Porter Martone

Aslong as the Sharks get no worse than the #2 pick they are guaranteed Schaefer or Misa. Obviously Schaefer is #1 on most Sharks fans wish list but if we end up with the 2nd pick Misa wouldn't be a bad plan B if Schaefer is gone. The Sharks will only lose out if they end up with the #3 pick or worse. Because I am not impressed with Hagens or Martone.

I had a dream where the Sharks were scheduled to play a game against the Blues somewhere in Middle America and thus the general consensus was that this, for some reason, would work against the Sharks and prevent them from picking 1st overall in this upcoming Draft, with me stating out loud a damning fact of "Matt Schaefer, you are a Chicago Blackhawk!"

Scouts seem pretty down on Martone's level of engagement when he doesn't have the puck on his stick. That's pretty concerning to me. And Hagen's fall in pre-draft rankings reminds me of Shane Wright's trajectory. Not sure if it's a good comparable, but IMO I think it's pretty reasonable to say landing at 3 would be a pretty big bummer at this point.

And Martone having the Wright sort of trajectory would have him as a 3rd line player in his rookie season as a 20-21 year old. If we're ending up with the 3rd or 4th overall pick in this draft and that's the way it plays out, that's a perfectly fine result for that stage in the process for that trajectory. There's still plenty of room to grow and that would still be pretty useful for the Sharks in the 2027-28 season. That would make someone like Zetterlund or Toffoli expendable or at the more prospect-ish level, we won't have to hang on too long to guys like Halttunen, Musty, or Chernyshov if their transition to pro hockey has a hiccup in it. Granted, it's not getting Schaefer or Misa as potential impact players immediately in spots of pretty vital importance but it's still very useful and valuable for the team down the road.

Our pipeline is already pretty darn good. The issue is that we need top NHL talent. Being mired year after year in the basement is not good. Mailing in next year is not good.

Just think, if we had one more top 4 D and one more top 6F this year (especially with size), how many of those tied/leading in the 3rd period games would we have won? Would it mean playoffs? likely no. but winning games is good for the kids. buidling a winning culture gives excitement and also acts as a great tool for recruiting and retaining talent. Being a perennial loser will make players want to get out of SJ as fast as possible. We need to start winning to start the cycle of how winning begets winning.

p.s.: Placing kids with top vets REALLLLY helps the kids, and also maxes out their value in trade. Setoguchi, Cheechoo, and many others become stars simply by playing with joe Thornton. That allowed DW to flip him and michalek to take a flyer on heatley. ***Setoguchi was the main piece in the franchise altering trade to acquire brent burns. Unsurprisingly, the moment he left jumbo's wing, he never ecllipsed 20 goals or 40 pts again.

This means that if the sharks can add a talent like Jumbo, they will get a whole lot more out of cherny, haltunnen, musty, Smith, celly, eklund, etc. Without star vets like jumbo, its a tough sled for the kids coming up.

The thought of Martone on a PP with Smith, Celebrini, and Eklund for the next 20 years is crazy exciting. He's special within 5 feet of the net. We don't have a guy like that- Cherny, Musty, Halt, and Bystedt offer size and some NHL skills, but it's not elite net front scorer (and he's more than that). I also don't worry about engagement too much as he'd likely play with Celebrini and Eklund. That has the potential to be a premier NHL line.

Never say never, but I wouldn't count on being able to trade for a player of Jumbo's caliber. But obviously, if they can make that trade for a pick (or any player not named Celebrini), they should do it.

I wouldn't. I don't think they'd be worth losing for a top four D or top 6 F. They'd need to be bona fide top line or top pairing talents to consider it.

If Brady Tkachuk is the best player available for that kind of package you keep the 3rd pick and draft the consolation prize, he's not a difference maker

No we aren't getting Draisaitl, but that's kind of the point, that level of player doesn't really get traded barring extenuating circumstances, in which case most teams are in a better situation than we are to make a trade without eroding the foundations of their franchise

We are not in a position to trade our first rounder under any realistic circumstances, the Oilers could send us McDavid with a verbal agreement to a long term extension for that pick straight up and we still wouldn't be close to the playoffs next year, just make the pick and keep building the base upon which we build this young core

We're the worst team in the league for a reason, trying to rush out of the basement by spending what few premium assets we have would be a disaster for the long term future and THERE IS NO PRESENT on this club, it will just keep us extra bad for even longer

Keep hording assets and keep nesting for the future, don't trade that pick, full stop

Brady Tkachuk is absolutely a difference maker. Not so as much as his brother, but I think if you compare Celebrini vs Barkov, Mack will top off as far more of one than Barkov so that would be a perfect balance. They don't need to rush, but if they don't get 1/2OA to get a legit top pair D or for sure 2C+, they will get a player with a similar outlook as Smith and it's not ideal to have that. Hording young players just hoping they develop is how you become Buffalo.

Look at him now. Production wise, he is having a comparable season to both Fantili and Carlsson rookie seasons.
