Only reason would be if Buffalo sees Misa as their guy and if Byram won't resign for #3D money. In this case, they'd be getting a cost-controlled replacement for a guy they were losing anyway and also walking away with their guy from the draft, which feels like a win for them. Grier could also say he's shopping the pick to Chicago, Nashville, so it would be a hell of a bluff to call if they really like the guy.

I recognize this all relies on two "if" scenarios together, but I actually think both of those ifs are more likely to happen than Buffalo actually landing at 1 and the Sharks at 2, which to me is the most far fetched part of that scenario.
Even if Misa is their guy, they’re going to be quite content with Hagens if that’s how it shakes out. They can move Byram in a different deal to get even more help but they should have great confidence the Sharks would take Schaefer.

No. GMs have to build relationships with other GMs and blatant lying isn't the way to do that. Because what if Buffalo doesn't take the deal and then watches SJ not pick Misa?

(I don't think the Vegas GM lied during the expansion draft at all.)
Who knows for sure but I think the idea that they weren't going to select Karlsson unless Cbus gave them a first, for example, is a pretty strong contender for a lie. I also think their use of LTIR points in that direction.

But for the sake of argument, play this out...let's say SJ views Misa as just a little ahead of Schaefer. I know many on here don't but Grier seemed pretty meh about Schaefer in his last media availability (unless he was, you know...bluffing 😉).

So in this scenario, Grier decides to take Misa *unless* Buffalo gives him Byram + 2OA, in which case, Schaefer (an awesome Dman of the future) + Byram (an awesome Dman now + the future) > Misa to Grier. No lies required.

I realized I just introduced a 4th if to the scenario, but again, I think all of these ifs are fairly reasonable. In this case, do you think Buffalo would pull the trigger or sit back and hope another LD or Hagens fixes their problems? I think they'd pull the trigger.

Even if Misa is their guy, they’re going to be quite content with Hagens if that’s how it shakes out. They can move Byram in a different deal to get even more help but they should have great confidence the Sharks would take Schaefer.
Maybe I'm buying too much into the Misa hype but it sounds to me like a team is unlikely to view Misa & Hagens as interchangeable at this point.

And I really don't think Buffalo is going to get much for Byram if the whole thing is he wants to be a #1D. Where else can he do that?

They may not be interchangeable at this point but it doesn't mean you can't be content with either of them when you have that sort of pick. Buffalo doesn't have to really care about Byram wanting to be a 1D somewhere. Whoever gives them the best deal is going to get Byram regardless of the personnel they have. He doesn't have trade protections.

top 2 pick is a slam dunk... as easy as drafting celebrini #1

picking #3 will result in families being torn apart over who GMMG should pick

picking #4 will be full blown cope

picking #5 will unite the clans around an eklund synergized deck

i don't THINK GMMG is really bluffing re: pumping the brakes on the Schaefer hype train, he seems like a no BS type of guy... imo it's probably because he's got a plan to go big game hunting for a defenseman in the next couple of offseasons and will be perfectly happy w/ drafting a forward this draft

That would be dumb since top pairing defense is the hardest position to get outside of a true #1 center.

I think this season, if we don't get Schaefer it would be a HUGE let down. We're the worst team in the league and we desperately in need of a 1D. If they go on a winning streak or if someone else wins the lottery and picks Schaefer, it would be almost as bad as Anaheim missing out on Bedard.

Let's increase our odds of getting that 1OA pick. We've come this far, let's finish it. Put in Georgiev all the time and have lots of guys out with lower body injuries.

We are going to finish last or second last

We traded most of our good trade chips already. We have one of the toughest schedules to go.

This team isn't going to do much.

Sharks have already dug themselves a deep enough hole, so they can actually try improve their game with the remaining games and still be drafting top 3.

Starting Georgiev in purpose to tank is wrong at this point and it sends a terrible message to Celebrini, Smith and Eklund + others.
Yep, we need all the help from the draft but the building part of the rebuild has already started when Celebrini showed everyone he is taking 1C responsibilities as an 18-year old.

We are four points behind Chicago with two games in hand.

We are the second-worst team in the league in goals scored per game and traded away our top scorer.

We are the worst team in the league in goals allowed per game, almost certainly have the worst goalie tandem in the league, and have a defensive corps composed of has-beens, never-weres, and a couple guys playing way above their talent level.

It would be a surprise if we finished anywhere other than last.

That's what I've been saying. There is no playoff for the Sharks this season, so be proactive and get the best draft position possible. That said, I think the Sharks still have to put out a quality lineup, or Bettman will step in and exclude them from the draft for purposely tanking. GM Mike Grier's draft strategy has to start with where the Sharks are drafting in the first round. Without knowing whether they're drafting #1-4, there's no draft strategy. That said, the Sharks should have plan B and go for the best available player at each stage of the draft. For example, if they get #1 Schaefer, #2 Misa, #3 Hagens, #4 Martone, or #145 Hodge.

Because the top-2 picks IMO would help the franchise significantly more than the presumed others.
Sharks can control whether they pick fourth or not. They can't control whether they pick third.

And as much as recency bias and stat counting has people wanting to elevate Misa to the #1 pick, there is still tons of debate in the scouting world as to whether Hagens or Misa is #2. We're gonna get a forward that is way more talented than anyone outside of our most recent first round picks to add to a team that is sorely lacking in offensive skill in the Top 6. We're gonna be fine.

I'm already excited for the freakouts when Grier drafts Martone or Hagens with Misa still on the board.

Here's a fun one.

Let's say we end up at 1 and Buffalo is at 2. Do you pick up the phone and tell them you're planning to pick Misa unless they want to trade up?

Byram's rights + 2OA for 1OA + Ferraro?

I know we never see moves like this, but this feels very much like Vegas' whole expansion draft and look at how that turned out for them...
I think a more likely hypothetical - if we land #2 and Buffalo is #4 are you willing to trade back?

I wouldn't. But I may be too caught up in the Misa hype, so if Grier does, I'd trust the plan.

It's amazing how much drafting Celebrini last year changes the level of angst I have around this draft. Thank God for Celebrini!

If he drafts Martone with Misa still on the board, I'm going to wonder if you're not actually Grier's secret burner account 😂
