2025 NHL Draft: Lose a ton for Porter Martone

Smith’s draft had the benefit of two star prospects in Michkov and Bedard as well as a very solid 3 behind them with Fantilli, Smith, Carlsson. A phenomenal draft all the way through beyond them though. Just missing real top tier defensemen.

This draft has a top 4 that is solid and then kind of a standard first round after. Schaefer is better (at least probably) than most of the recent draft’s defensemen.
I think the 5-10 range this time around is miles better than 23-24, it’s just Frondell and McQueen seem so overrated now they’re almost underrated through circumstances.

Chicago may also avoid Hagens since they already have so many smurfs. I'm worried they're going to realize Schaefer is way better than Levshunov, Korchinski and all the other defensemen they've recently drafted and just take him.
If they drafted Demi last year then I’d be more worried.

Watching Calgary vs. Regina and have a couple thoughts.

1. Benjamin Kindel has lots of good qualities. Leverages well on the forecheck, anticipates where the play is going to be to get the puck back. Active in all zones. Playmaking talent is a plus. Decent handling. He is as @Hodge would say, a smurf though. Seems like a typical 20s-30s pick with an outside chance to develop into a skilled winger despite playing center right now.

2. Reese Hamilton for Regina is an interesting one. His point production SUCKS and is never a good sign to have such a drop off after a real good D-1 season for a defenseman. However...he looks good. His skating is impressive. He moves in all directions super well, manipulated a defender to get his shot on net and led to an assist in the first period. I need to watch him closely this game as normally players look worse than their point production but just that small sample size he looked way better than his horrible production would suggest. Seems like a Michael Fisher type that you take a swing on in the 3rd/4th and bank on the skating turning him into an NHLer. But we have seen how that has worked out for Fisher...

I know you know this, but you have to pick, what, ten Fishers to get a hit on one? I'm fine with doing that using lottery tickets.

Yeah that's true. Analytic folks would say that these toolsy non-productive picks hit at such a lower rate than the high-production, less toolsy guys though. Need a mix of both I think to make a good class.

Hamilton always stood out to me last year in Calgary when I was watching Yakemchuk. No idea what's going on with him this year, but I think he's an interesting mid-round shot.

Hagens is a better skater, faster, a little shorter, probably more engaged defensively. If we pick him, I think he's the guy we look to as the 2C behind Celebrini more than Smith. But who knows what happens between now and June.
That's a pretty good summary of the differences. IMO, Hagen is also chippier and plays with more pace, while Smith has a slightly better shot. I'd also expect Hagens to be the better NHLer.

Wetsch doing Wetsch things and hit the puck in from the net front. Kindel has some confidence with the puck. Seems like he knows where he wants to put it and has the skill to get it there.
Right after I said this Kindel hit like a 150 foot pass for a breakaway goal lol

As somebody who has watched most of BC's games the past two years, Hagens and Smith don't play similar games in the slightest. This year BC is an elite shut down team allowing one the lowest shots per game average in Hockey East history, with a near perfect PK. Hagens is a big part of both of those, and I would expect the offensive production to explode soon.

I do think Hagens and Smith would complement each other fantastically.

Are they that much better defensively this year? I remember they were a pretty good defensive team last year too. Right now Fowler is averaging 23.3 shots against per game and last year 26.6 shots against per game.

They mentioned it in the broadcast last night so don't have anything to link, but yeah that 3.3 shots per game less is a 12.5% decrease. So might not sound like a lot but I'd say that's significantly better, even if 26.6 was still very good.

Picking a professional player with some tools is almost always far better, even the low end ones usually end up being something and the odds a Leon Muggli type of prospect becomes an all-star aren't that low.

Points percentage, baby! Our RW stat looking pretty neat too.

Their prospect rating is a bit out of whack. Martone isn't going 1st overall.

Almost 60% of our season is over and we are last in the league in points percentage and goal differential.

Everything is proceeding as expected.
