NBA 2025 NBA Playoffs

The tweet references a historical moment in 1996 when Bob Hill, then head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, was fired after a 3-15 start despite injuries to key players like David Robinson.

Gregg Popovich, the Spurs' general manager at the time, took over as head coach after firing Hill, a move Hill reportedly challenged with the quote, “If you think you can coach this team better than me, then f***ing do it.”

Popovich’s tenure began with a tanking strategy in the 1996-97 season, leading to a 20-62 record, which allowed the Spurs to draft Tim Duncan in 1997, a cornerstone of their future success.

After that season, Popovich led the Spurs to 50+ wins for 20 consecutive seasons, winning five NBA championships and establishing one of the most successful coaching runs in NBA history.

The image in the tweet, a viral TikTok meme of LeBron James reacting with a skeptical expression, humorously represents Popovich’s dominance, implying he far exceeded Hill’s challenge.

Bob Hill’s coaching career continued after the Spurs, including stints with the Seattle SuperSonics and as an assistant with the Phoenix Suns, but he never achieved the same level of success as Popovich [Web ID: 1].

The tweet connects to a broader narrative on X about Popovich’s strategic tanking, as seen in Thread 1, where users note his calculated moves to secure high draft picks like Duncan and later Victor Wembanyama in 2023.
That was a terrible association exercise.

Seems like the guy didn't think out that tweet very well but sent it non the less.

Lebron doesn't know how to play defense. It is so obvious over his whole career. Chasing down a player once and a while is not defense, its a defensive play.
He was a great defender. Go back and watch the 2013 finals. They won cause he was guarding Parker and Manu had to play point guard and kept turning the ball over. Now he takes most of the time off on defense though.

You can point to one series where he shut down a smaller player but that doesn't mean you can extrapolate that over his career to prove a point. The fact that he plays in the zone defense era means he is able to cheat on D far more. Lebron is known for flat out giving up on D especially in a Lakers uniform.

Vintage James tonight.

It wasnt just one series. At 40 years old now he doesnt try. To suggest that during his apex he wasnt a great defender is just absurd.

It’s going to be amazing how many teams went to James Harden for their last shot at getting over the top

Nice to see Kawhi lose. Took his talents to California instead of winning the second of back-to-back championships. All those guys who left Toronto for "greener" pastures ended up regretting it: Vince, McGrady and Leonard will regret it too.
Toronto let a lot of folks walk too including Siakam and FVV. Now they have nobody.

The year after Kawhi left they still went to the second round and lost in game 7. The writing was on the wall after that. They are in year 3 of a rebuild but it's not going all that great. Ingram and Barnes are cool but I feel they will be too good to get a really star in the draft. Im just not sold on Barnes being that guy. Masai and Webster are pretty good at their jobs though so I have faith in them build a good team.

Siakam and FVV were never guys you build around.
